editEtymology 1
editFrom Proto-Finnic *taimën, an extension of Proto-Finnic *taimi (“trout, salmon”). Cognates include Karelian taimen and Estonian taim. Russian тайме́нь (tajménʹ), Latvian taimiņš and dialectal Swedish tajmenlax are borrowed from Finnic. Similar-sounding words include taima (“ceiling joist”) or taimi (“sapling”), but they are not likely related.
