editInherited from Proto-Philippine *takəp (“cover”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *ta(ŋ)kəp, ultimately a meaning shift from Proto-Austronesian *takəp (“to double in layer”). Compare Kapampangan takap, Bikol Central takop, Hiligaynon takop, and Waray-Waray takop. See also Maranao tekep and Malay tekap.
