Inherited from Latin tata,[1] ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *tatás. Compare Aromanian tatã, Dalmatian tuota (father), Neapolitan tata (father); cf. also Albanian tatë. It was possibly reinforced by the similar South Slavic term (e.g. Serbo-Croatian tata (dad)).
