editFrom Revived Ancient Greek ταυροκαθάψια (taurokathápsia), variant of ταυροκάθαψις (taurokáthapsis), from ταῦρος (taûros, “bull”) + κάθαψις (káthapsis). Apparently coined by Arthur Evans, the excavator of Knossos, in ca. 1910.
