Etymology

edit

From Latin tonus, probably through a Late Latin or Vulgar Latin *tronus, incremented with an -r- due to influence from *tronitus < tonitrus. Alternatively, it may have derived from Old Spanish (compare Spanish trueno), cf. also Portuguese trom, Catalan tro, Occitan tron, obsolete/regional Italian trono / truono. Ultimately from Ancient Greek τόνος (tónos).
