From Middle High German ummekēren, umbekēren, from Old High German umbikēren, from Proto-West Germanic *umbikaʀʀjan. Equivalent to um- (round) +‎ kehren (turn). Cognate with Middle Low German ümmekēren, Dutch omkeren, Old English ymbċierran (to turn about, revolve).
