Etymology

edit

From Proto-Albanian *awena, an innovation based on *au̯e (down, off) (cf. Sanskrit अव (áva, id)), replacing Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁- (to place, put). The original meaning must have been 'to put down, put aside', as in Latin pōnere (to put).[1] Alternatively from Proto-Albanian *u̯enō, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁wen- (to spread).[2]
