From Middle High German verzeren, verzern, vorzern, ferzeren, ferzern, forzern, from Old High German firzeran (to tear up, consume), from Proto-West Germanic *frateran (to tear up, tear to shreds), equivalent to ver- +‎ zehren. Cognate with Middle Low German vörtēren (modern German Low German vertehren), Dutch verteren (to consume, devour), English fortear (to tear up).
