editEtymology 2
editProbably from Italian viola, but uncertain since the shift of l to r usually indicates a Latin source. The r may have come by analogy with vior (cf. înviora) < viu. Cf. also Old Occitan viola (Occitan viula), Spanish vihuela, French vielle.
