water main (plural water mains)

  1. The principal pipe, usually underground, for conveying water to residential and business properties.
    • 1960 June, “Talking of Trains: Sunday on the G.N. line”, in Trains Illustrated, page 322:
      Helpston: Removal and replacement of rails on the main line; also the erection of a gantry to carry a water main across the railway.
