From Old English *wrappan, *wræppan, from Proto-Germanic *wrappaną (to wrap), from Proto-Indo-European *werb- (to bend, turn).

Akin to Danish vravle (to wind, wrap), Middle Low German wrempen (to scrunch the face). Compare also Middle English wlappen (to wrap, fold). More at lap, envelop, develop.
