Either from a Vulgar Latin root *exbēlāre, from Late Latin bēlāre, from Latin bālāre (bleat) (compare Italian belare), or from s- (< ex-) + a Vulgar Latin *verrāre, from verres (boar) (cf. Spanish berrear, berrar, Portuguese berrar). Cognate to Aromanian azgher, azghirari, Megleno-Romanian zber, zberari.
