Greeting people isn't that hard. It just depends on what time of day it is. In the morning Johnny would say:
Johnny |
おはようございます |
Good morning |
Now lets time travel into the future a little bit. In the afternoon Mary would say...
Yawn... it's getting late, did we get in the time machine again? It's evening!
Johnny |
こんばんは |
Good evening |
*** Same WARNING as the one above. |
Nice. But what about if Johnny and Mary meet and they want to know how each other are doing? Pretty easy, let's listen in.
Johnny |
げんきですか? |
Are you OK? |
Mary |
はい、げんきです. |
Yes, I'm fine. |
~ Language note of interest! ~ |
げんき literally means something like base of your spirit/mood so people |
speaking Japanese are asking if you have vigor or energy or something. |
But "Are you vigorous? Yes, I am." just doesn't translate right! |
