Hymmnos Language is a fictional language that appears in the computer game series " Ar tonelico " ( PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 software) and related works created by Banpresto and Gust . Additionally, when simply referring to Hymmnos outside of the work, it can sometimes refer not to the Hymmnos language itself, but to musics and songs written in Hymmnos.

Overview

edit

The Ar tonelico series is a science fiction fantasy set in a world where civilization was lost due to a man-made disaster, and the remaining technology is recognized as magic (see " Ar tonelico " for details). Hymmnos is an original artificial language that appears throughout the game, such as in the dialogue for scenes where magic is chanted, the songs in the game, and the background graphics , and the meanings of the words and grammar are detailed. Although the meanings of many of these Hymmnos messages are not revealed in the game, translation guides are available outside the game, such as the content on the official website[1] [2] . By translating these messages, players can uncover hidden meanings, such as the feelings of the characters hidden in the songs in the game.[3]

In the game, it is also called the Emotional Sound Language and the Language of Emotions , but is usually simply called "Hymmnos". However, in the world of Ar tonelico, Hymmnos also means "poetry", so it is not used when the difference between the two is confusing. A different language (Shell language) is used in daily life, and Hymmnos is recognized as an ancient language by ordinary people, so it is rarely used by anyone other than Reyvateils, but it is used for spells, bulkhead operation, tower management, and so on.

The following content is composed of text that includes theories, physical laws, history, etc. in the world of the game. In this article, the First Tower will be referred to as "Ar tonelico", the Second Tower as "Sol Marta", and the Third Tower as "Harvestasha". Additionally, the regions in which each tower is located will be referred to as "Sol Ciel", "Metafalss", and "Sol Cluster", while the world as a whole will be referred to as "Ar Ciel".

Construction of the Third Tower, the Primordial Tower, begins.
  • *AD is the era name of Ar Ciel. It is an abbreviation of " Ammue Dius ", which means "The Age of Divine Sound". This world's era began when sound was recognized as a force.
  • *1 Omega Spectrum is a four-dimensional method of unfolding that draws out all the emotions from a single moment of poetry. When a human remembers a poem, they are able to grasp that poem in their mind in an instant. This method makes use of that fact. With this discovery, the Tower was able to weave Hymmnos.

Characters

edit

Hymmnos Glyph

It uses unique characters called the Hymmnos alphabet. It has a one-to-one correspondence with the basic letters of the Latin alphabet (a-z and A-Z), the numbers 0-9, and the symbols - . , : / > < = #, making it easy to convert to Latin script . However, since the words and pronunciations are based on various languages but also contain many original elements, translating them into Japanese after converting them into the Latin alphabet requires a different type of work.

Hymmnos character shapes

edit

The shapes of Hymmnos letters represent the energy and directionality of each sound. The sound source is at the center of the letter, and it is made up of three elements around it: an arc, a vertical or horizontal line, and a radiating beam. The arc represents the alpha wave energy of "comfort", the vertical or horizontal line represents the beta wave energy of "tension", and the radiating beam represents the gamma wave energy of "stimulation".

Hymmnos characters (excluding numbers and symbols) have 26 letters, the same as the basic Latin alphabet, and among these 26 letters they are divided into 6 major elements and 20 minor elements. During the time of Tsukiyomi before the Ritsu, the meaning of each letter (phonetic spectrum) was studied from its effect, and they were used in combinations of letters rather than as words (which is why there are many words in Tsukiyomi before the Ritsu that have the same letters stacked on top of each other). As research into the spectrum of each letter progressed, they began to be used in the form of words.

6 major inspirational elements
The Six Great Idea Elements are the English vowels with N added, giving us six letters: A, I, U, E, O, and N. In Hymmnos, these Six Great Idea Elements correspond to vowels, and in New Testament Pastalie, they are used as the Emotion Vowels of Emotion Sound Verbs.
Each character is
A: Power sound / I: Holy sound / U: Hatred sound / E: Love sound / O: Evil sound / N: Silence
It represents.
20 Small Elements
The 20 small elements are the basic characters of the Latin alphabet excluding the six major elements, i.e., the consonants excluding the N in English. Each character has a meaning that corresponds to the Japanese language, but since this was discovered by Tsukusane through her research into the Ritsushi Zen Tsukuyomi, it is not necessarily fixed. Also, the meaning can change when combined.

Derivation

edit

There are many different Hymmnos languages that have their roots in different places and situations. These roots are called "Laws," and while they share some commonalities, each has its own unique grammar system and vocabulary.

Before the creation of the Hymmnos language

edit

This refers to what is said to be the origin of the Hymmnos language.

Al Sierra (Star Language)

edit

Ar Sierra is a language spun by the star (Ar Ciel), and is not a language for humans. It is the language on which the Ritsuzen Tsukuyomi was based, and as it is not a Hymmnos language, it uses a different script that is not Hymmnos characters to write it. As it has a frequency that far exceeds the range of human hearing, it is impossible to grasp the full meaning from the pronunciation, and although research is being conducted at the Archia Laboratory, only a vague grasp of the superficial meaning of a very small portion of the sounds is possible.

Risshizen Tsukuyomi

edit

The oldest Hymmnos. To be precise, it cannot be called a Hymmnos, it is more like a curse or a chant.

In the First Period, it was known, albeit slightly, that words had power. People did not know the details, but they were aware of the power of words. Eventually, people known as Tsukikanade appeared, who knew of words with various powers. They also learned that the alphabet has power when broken down into letters. In other words, the origin of Hymmnos lies in each letter. Developing this into a systematized version down to the word level, the Cult Ciel Law is what is known as Hymmnos Law. It is said that the origins of Hymmnos verbs can be discovered through the Tsukiyomi Law History.

An example of a Ritsushi Zen Tsukuyomi is " Xa Ziqt wac s " from the Spica edition of the Hymmnos Musical.

"Ritsushizentsukiyomi" is a typographical error .

After the creation of Hymmnos language

edit

The two rules above are not technically called rules, and are not Hymmnos languages. The rules from the Cult Ciel rule onwards are officially considered Hymmnos languages. Currently (around AD 3770), there are the following six rules:

Cultsiel (Ancient language before the First BCE)

edit

Hymmnos is the origin of everything. From this point onwards, it is officially called the Hymmnos language.

As Tsukukanade and the others gradually came to understand the meaning of each character, they realized that by combining them into words, they could gain even greater power. Thus, by creating various words and their combinations, they systematized them into sentences, which became the Kurtossiel Note. As this is a Hymmnos that Tsukukanade created for herself, it can naturally be used by humans as well. However, while humans can only borrow a small amount of power from nature, Reyvateils can borrow power from the Tower, so the difference in effectiveness is clear.

The Courtesy syllable system contains a huge number of words, most of which are registered as part of the Central Standard syllable system.

Central Standard Note (Common Language)

edit

A Hymmnos to control the tower.

Ar tonelico originally registered every Hymmnos from all over the world, past and present, but as the number became so vast, it became necessary to organize them. El Elemia standardized all the Hymmnos up to that point in order to operate the Tower, and this Central Standard Note was created.

Currently, most of the Hymmnos registered in Ar tonelico are in this Central Standard Note, and once the other notes are standardized, they will all be recognized as Central Standard Note.

Alpha Note (Origin Spell)

edit

The Hymmnos of the Reyvateil Origins. It is not a Ritual derived from Tsukuyomi Ritual History, but a complete programming language that can only be used by the Reyvateil Origins by programming them, and so it can only be used by Origins and the Reyvateils that belong to the Towers they govern.

The Alpha Note is used by Origins by programming the Tower in such a way that "if you say A, effect B will be output." Therefore, it can have an effect with just one word.

Ancient Metafalss Note (I Era Sacred Language)

edit

This note was introduced to the suzerain state of Metafalss, a region far from Sol Ciel, and changed there. The details are unknown, but it has an extremely long and complex grammar system. However, its effects are strong. As it is partially registered in Ar tonelico in Sol Ciel, it can be used by Reyvateils, but the effect is not 100%. Furthermore, the poems sung by Mir are in the Ancient Metafalss note, as she admires the legends of Metafalss.

New Testament of Pastalie (Pastalia Idioms)

edit

It is a Hymmnos created by Infel in Metafalss, and was created with the goal of maximizing the effect of Hymmnos. It is used by IPD Reyvateils, those who use Infel Phira as their Song Magic server.

Since it is not registered in Ar tonelico, it cannot be understood by Reyvateils other than IPD Reyvateils. Conversely, since Infel Phira's server emulates the Ar tonelico server, IPD Reyvateils can understand and use the Ar tonelico server's syntax.

Its grammar system is so complex that it is assumed that it will be compiled by computer from the very beginning. One of its distinctive features is the "Emotion Verbs," which combine the "Emotion Sounds + (S) + V" from the Central Standard Note system into a single word.

The names of Hymmnos that use the New Testament of Pastalie begin with "METHOD_".

Clusterism ( Cluster dialect )

edit

A language created in Sol Cluster, an area far from Sol Ciel. It is a dialect of the Central Standard Script .

The Third Tower's song magic server was derived from Sol Ciel and then brought to Sol Cluster, where the Cluster Note developed independently by Sol Cluster was registered. As such, it is not compatible with other towers, and can only be used by Reyvateils who belong to the Third Tower.

Thoughts

edit

Hymmnos has grammatical elements called Emotion Sounds which express the current emotions of the speaker. A sentence in Hymmnos must basically contain Emotion Sounds, which is why it is called an emotional language. A sentence without Emotion Sounds will not be recognised as a Hymmnos by the Tower. Therefore, Emotion Sounds are essential if you wish to obtain some effect from the Tower. Conversely, there are also cases where Emotion Sounds are not included in order to directly convey feelings as "words" without obtaining the output of the Tower (such as Mir's <EXEC_HARMONIUS/.>).

Emotions are composed of three words, called Emotion I, Emotion II, and Emotion III.

Emotion I
The first part of the Emotion Sound expresses the degree of an emotion, such as ‘very’ or ‘a little’.
There are six types of emotions, in order of intensity: Rrha (trance state), Was (very intense), Wee (quite a bit), Fou (a little), Ma (calm), and Nn (apathetic).
Of these, the most frequently used Hymmnos (excluding Hymmnos Spells) are [Was] and [Wee]. This is because, in normal situations when singing a Hymmnos, the Reyvateil is often in a state of mind where they are deeply moved, or in some other state of being shaken. [Rrha] expresses an even stronger emotion than [Was], but it is used when the Reyvateil is overwhelmed by such strong emotions that they are unable to maintain their sanity. [Rrha] is only used when there are no other options. [Nn] also expresses a state of lethargy (lack of motivation), but for the reasons mentioned above, it is almost never used. The exception to this is the Hymmnos that starts with [Nn], <EXEC_METAFALICA/.>, which can be said to be a fairly rare example.
On the other hand, when it comes to Hymmnos Spells, there are many situations where they can be used calmly (such as the Tower's bulkhead authentication), so 【Ma】 or 【Fou】 are often used instead.
Furthermore, since Emotion Sounds are generally used at the beginning of a sentence, the first letter of Emotion Sound I is often spelled with a capital letter.
Emotion Sound II
The second part of the Emotion Sound expresses the type of emotion, such as “joy” or “sadness.”
Among all Emotion Sounds, there are the most variety, and many of them are equivalent to Japanese adjectives. Because they directly express the speaker's feelings, there is a large degree of variation in meaning when translated into Japanese. There are also some that cannot be expressed with a single adjective, such as [apea] (I'm so happy), which was also featured in the Toukousphere.
Emotion Sound III
The final part of the Emotion Sound expresses to the speaker and the subject of the sentence what the speaker wants to do with the current situation (to maintain it or to escape from it).
There are six types: [erra] (I want it to stay like this forever), [ra] (I want it to stay like this), [wa] (I don't care, I accept the situation as it is), [ga] (I want to get out of it quickly), [gaya] (I never want to go back to the old situation), and [gagis] (I don't care what happens to me).

Basic first-person grammar

edit

The basic structure is [Emotion Sound-VOC], where the subject in the fifth sentence pattern in English is replaced with Emotion Sound. Since Hymmnos are basically spells, the first person subject is often omitted, but in cases such as when opening the tower's bulkheads, a subject is used for personal authentication.

For example, in the sentence " Fou paks ra exec hymmnos PAJA. ", the Emotion Sound is " Fou paks ra, " meaning "My heart is beating a little nervous, but I don't want to escape," the predicate verb is " exec ," meaning "to execute," O is the thing that is executed, " hymmnos ," and C is the name of the Hymmnos, " PAJA ." Since it is clear that the speaker is the subject, the " mea, " which corresponds to "I," has been omitted.

Second and third person grammar

edit

Since Hymmnos are basically spells, there are few sentences in anything other than the first person. Second and third person sentences follow the structure [Emotion Sounds-V-(rre)-S'-V'-OC], where Emotion Sounds indicate the speaker's feelings, and V indicates the speaker's actions. " rre " is called the subject definition, and indicates that the following noun is the subject. If S' is you, he, she, or any of their plural forms, a special word (general subject definition) is used instead of " rre ". For example, if " yor " (you) is the subject, " yorr " is used. [V'-OC] has the same structure as the first person, except that the subject is S'. Verbs in Hymmnos do not have any inflections.

For example, consider the sentence, " Was yant gagis weel yorr pat crudea et." (I am extremely sad. I hope to recover from this situation soon. I hope that you will be relieved of your great suffering). The opening sentence, " Was yant gagis weel ," expresses that the speaker feels extremely sad about "you" and wishes to change the situation, while " yorr pat crudea et " describes the specific situation, that "you" will be relieved of great suffering.

As such, Hymmnos has complex syntax for second and third person sentences, making it unsuitable for general conversation, and even in Sol Ciel it is only used in a few situations.

Guaranteed Definition Syntax of Emotion Sounds

edit

The Emotion Sounds Guaranteed Definition Syntax is a method for omitting Emotion Sounds from long sentences. In cases where the singer's emotions do not change much while chanting a Hymmnos, if the same Emotion Sounds are used for every sentence, the sentence will become long. However, simply omitting the Emotion Sounds will not make it a valid Hymmnos sentence, and it will not be recognised by the Tower, so the Emotion Sounds are omitted using the Guaranteed Definition Syntax.

The affirmation definition begins with "(Emotion Sound) 0x vvi. " and ends with " 1x AAs ixi. ". Any statements between these two will have the same meaning as the ones in the Emotion Sounds in parentheses.

Was yea ra 0x vvi. [Commitment definition begins] (I'm very happy)
hartes ar ciel. (Loving the only world)
hartes fandel walasye. (Loving many people)
melenas yor. (Loving you (precious person))
1x AAs ixi. [End of commitment definition]

When translating this, you can simply add Emotion On to each sentence, such as "I am so happy to be able to love this one and only world, so many people, and my precious you."

Binasphere

edit

Binaspheres are a way for one person to sing two songs at once, and were originally developed for Tsukunade to gain greater power. Reyvateils can also use them, and the effects are greater than when Tsukunade uses them.

Here's how to use it:

  • => [Binasphere text] EXEC hymme 2x1/0 >> [Interleaved period].
  • This is how to use it. Anything outside of the [ ] is a fixed sentence (a definition that indicates it is a Binasphere, the activation word).
  • In this case, the > at the beginning of a sentence is pronounced "tabu", 2x1/0 is pronounced "ji gui o", and >> is pronounced "tras".
  • Also, the 0s and 1s in the [interleaving period] are treated as binary numbers, so they are pronounced as "o" and "i" respectively.
  • An example will now be used to explain.
  • The first verse is "Was yea ra chs hymmnos mea." and the second verse is "Wee ki ra enter yor."
  • The two poems are broken down into syllables (when breaking down into words, place an x at the end of the string) and combined in a way that makes them easy to pronounce.
  • Thus, the Binasphere sentence was born: "WAS WEE KI YEA RA RA CHS HYMx ENTER YOR NOS MEA."
  • Replace this with [Binasphere text].
  • Next, create an equation that shows how the sentences in this Binasphere are combined.
  • In this formula, the first poem is represented as 0 and the second poem as 1.
  • Simply represent each block separated by spaces in the Binasphere text above with 0 and 1.
  • This will result in the formula "011001001100", which should be replaced with the [interleave period].
  • The final sentence is "=>WAS WEE KI YEA RA RA CHS HYMx ENTER YOR NOS MEA EXEC hymme 2x1/0 >>011001001100."

Although this results in somewhat complicated sentences, it is very useful because the sentences can be freely combined and the effect of the poem can be divided in two.

New Testament of Pastalie

edit

New Testament Pastalie is a law developed by Infel based on other laws. Above all else, it is a law that places great importance on high effectiveness and quick chanting, and it is possible for a sentence to consist of just one word. The greatest feature of this law is the existence of an element called "Emotion Verbs", which combine "Emotion Sounds + (S) + V". In addition, the grammar has been expanded, and syntax such as passive voice, emphasis, negation, treating Emotion Verbs as nouns, and the use of quotation marks " " have been defined.

Emotion Verbs

edit

Emotion Sound Verbs are a compilation of the "Emotion Sounds + (S) + V" from the Central Standard Note. In the New Testament of Pastalie, all Emotion Sounds and verbs are expressed as Emotion Sound Verbs. Emotion Sound Verbs are made up of two elements: "Basic Words" and "Emotion Vowels", which are used in combination.

Basic Vocabulary
Base words are the basis for describing what type of verb an Emotion Sound Verb is. In terms of parts of speech, an Emotion Sound Verb can be called a Verb even if it consists only of base words. Base words have the meaning of a verb in their basic form. (Example: [hmmr] sing)
The basic form of a base word has a period (.) inserted between the letters, and this period is called a "Bank Period". By inserting an Emotion Vowel into a Bank Period, it becomes a Hymmnos. If the base word is "abcde", the Bank Periods go from the left to the right as Bank 1, 2, 3, etc., and the lower the number, the greater the effect. Therefore, Emotion Vowels that express stronger feelings to the singer are inserted into Bank Periods with lower numbers. It is not necessary to fill in all of the Bank Periods.
Emotion Vowels
Emotion vowels are inserted into the bank periods of basic words to express the type and object of emotion. Their role is similar to that of Emotion No. II in the Central Standard Tone.
There are three levels of Emotion Vowels depending on the subject.
Level 1: Own emotions (only the six major inspirational elements)
Level 2: Feelings and emotions towards others (Y+6 major idea elements)
Level 3: Thoughts and emotions about where you are now (LY+ 6 major inspiration elements)
The difference in levels only relates to the _target, not the intensity of each emotion. The difference in the intensity of the emotion is only expressed by the bank number. The emotions expressed by the Emotion Vowels are related to the meanings of the six major inspiration elements mentioned above .
Emotion Verbs
Emotion Verbs are completed by combining these base words with Emotion Vowels.
As a concrete example, if you turn 【hmmr】 “to sing” into an Emotion Sound Verb, you get the word 【hYEmEmr】.
In Bank 1 there is the Level 2 Emotion Vowel [YE] “I want you to be happy,” and in Bank 2 there is the Level 1 Emotion Vowel [E] “Joy.” From the Bank Number, it can be seen that first and foremost you wish happiness for the other person, but with almost the same strength you also wish for your own joy.
Based on this, it roughly translates to "I sing with joy for your happiness." I say "roughly" because, even among the Hymmnos languages, the New Testament of Pastalie has particularly large fluctuations in meaning, making it difficult to pinpoint a single definition.
Furthermore, if the _target person is visible, 【hYEmEmr】 can be used as a single sentence. This will be explained in more detail in the next section.

Basic grammar

edit

The grammar of the New Testament of Pastalie is different depending on whether the person in question can be seen or not.

When the _target is visible
In this case, the grammar is at its simplest, and it can be completed using only Emotion Sound Verbs. The definition of "being able to see the other person" can be either when the subject is yourself, when if it is someone else you can point at them, or when the subject is a place around you.
For example, the previous 【hYEmEmr】 can be activated by adding the trigger 『/.』 to 【hYEmEmr/.】. The trigger is to distinguish it from a bank period, so it is not necessary when there is another symbol (such as ! or ?) at the end of the sentence. In either case, it is just a matter of notation, so it is not pronounced when actually singing.
Of course, even if you can see the person you're speaking to, you can also continue with an object or complement rather than just using the Emotion Sound Verb.
If you can't see the _target
If the person you are speaking to is not visible, you must make the _target clear by adding an object.
If you use 【hYEmEmr】 as an Emotion Sound Verb and activate it on Infel 【Infel】, it will become 【hYEmEmr Infel/.】.

The only difference between when the _target is visible and when it is not is whether the object is required or not. Other grammar (word order, etc.) is the same as the Central Standard Note. Also, since Infel Phira, the song magic server for the New Testament of Pastalie, emulates the notes registered in Ar tonelico, words from other notes can also be used.

Syntax

edit
Subject definition
The subject definition is done by putting 【rre】 before the subject, just like in Central Standard Note. Pronouns such as "you" and "he" do not have 【rre】 added (except when emphasis is required) and dedicated words (general subject definitions) are used, which is also the same. However, in the case of the New Testament of Pastalie, 【x.】 is placed before the subject definition or generic subject definition. This is done by putting an Emotion Vowel in the bank period to express one's own feelings, and corresponds to the "Emotion On + V" in the second and third person grammar of Central Standard Note.
To sum it up, it becomes 【x. (rre)+S+Emotion Sound Verb+O】 (with Emotion Vowels inserted into the bank periods of 【x.】).
Passive Voice
Adding 【eh】 to the end of an Emotion Verb makes it passive. There is no space between the Emotion Verb and the 【eh】.
Example: [hYEmEmr] (active voice) → [hYEmEmreh] (passive voice)
Emphasis
By preceding a general subject definition (such as [yorr] or [herr]) with the subject definition [rre], you can emphasize the subject.
denial
Putting 【zz】 before a noun or Emotion Verb expresses negation.
Treating Emotion Verbs as Nouns
When an Emotion Verb is used with all of its bank periods intact, it can be used as a noun, similar to a gerund in English.
Square bracket notation
When writing things like sayings, the Japanese expression ":/ /:" is used. The text itself is written between the slashes.

Functions

edit

In the Central Standard Note, the guaranteed definition syntax of Emotion Sounds makes it possible to omit repetition of the same Emotion Sounds, but in the New Testament of Pastalie, the sentence itself can be replaced with a single word. This is called a Function.

The grammar uses the following structure: [word not in the existing Hymmnos language] -> [sentence]. "->" is pronounced as "pasu".

If you use the function to define a sentence as a word, then from then on, saying that word is the same as saying the defined sentence. It's like an instant alpha law.

Furthermore, once a function is used during chanting, it will remain valid for the duration of the poem, but once the poem ends, the function definition becomes invalid. It cannot be used permanently like Alpha Note.

Use of Hymmnos

edit

As mentioned above, Hymmnos is primarily used as spells. Spell formats that use Hymmnos can be broadly divided into three types: Hymmnos Extract , Hymmnos Spell , and Hymmnos Word .

Hymmnos Extract

edit

A song that directly controls the Tower, and takes the form <EXEC_(NAME)/.>. In the story, "Hymmnos" refers to Hymmnos Extracts. They are classified into two types, "Origin Exclusive" and "General Purpose", depending on the amount of H-Waves conductor required. A Hymn Code is required to use Hymmnos, but since Hymn Codes are only assigned to Origins and pureblooded β-types, humans and third generation Reyvateils cannot use them (there is some special reason why third generation can use Hymmnos).

To use it, a Hymn Crystal (HC) is downloaded into the crystal that contains the feelings of the poem, and the Reyvateil interprets the feelings through her own sensibilities and sings the poem to activate it. Hymmnos themselves are just programs, but it is possible for a Reyvateil to spin one from nothing on their own. However, it requires very strong feelings, and spinning one on one's own is said to be close to a miracle.

The songs that control Infel Phira are exclusive to IPD Reyvateils, and take the form <METHOD_(NAME)/.>. All IPD Reyvateils are Third Generation, but as they do not require a Hymn Code to download, anyone can download it as long as they have the required amount of conductive H-waves. However, when it comes to Infel Phira's Mode Shift or compiling the IPD Reyvateils' feelings, only IPD Reyvateils who have been recognized as "Queens" by Infel Phira, the Children of Mio, can download it.

Hymmno Fusion
Since Hymn Crystals are simply infused with the feelings of their creator, the lyrics and melody of the song will differ depending on the Reyvateil that downloads it, but the effect will usually be the same. However, if the Reyvateil who downloaded the Hymmnos has feelings that are even stronger than the feelings that were infused into it, then, although this is extremely rare, the effect of the song can change.
The concept of Hymmno Fusion was born out of a question asked by Shikata Akiko when writing the lyrics for <EXEC_HARMONIUS/.> during the production of Hymn Chronicle 1, as explained in the 5th volume.

Hymmnos Words

edit

These are referred to as "Song Magic" in the story. They are activated by the "Socket Plug-in Hymmnos" <EXEC_HYMME/.> that comes pre-installed in all Reyvateils. Unlike Hymmnos Extracts, Song Magic is presumed to be spun by the individual, so it is possible to spin them in a short space of time using Dives and similar. Hymmnos Words send a signal to the Tower and are output from there, so they cannot be used unless the Tower is functioning. Furthermore, as they are used under the Tower's management, they do not have any effect on the Tower's systems.

EXEC_HYMME/. Song Magic
The effect of <EXEC_HYMME/.> itself is 『Embodying Delusions』, converting thoughts and delusions (dynamic H-waves) into magical energy (dynamic D-waves). When activated, it takes the form of <EXEC_HYMME_(NAME)/.>.
METHOD_HYMME/.Type Song Magic
Instead of <EXEC_HYMME/.>, IPD Reyvateils have <METHOD_HYMME/.> pre-installed, and its effect is the same as <EXEC_HYMME/.>. When activated, it takes the form <METHOD_HYMME_(NAME)/.>.
EXEC_FLIP/. Song Magic
In addition to <EXEC_HYMME/.>, the Third Tower Reyvateils also come pre-installed with the socket plugin type Hymmnos <EXEC_FLIP/.>. When activated, it takes the form of <EXEC_FLIP_(NAME)/.>. <EXEC_FLIP/.> has the effect of "making the user delusional", converting the user's life force (static H-waves) into matter (static D-waves), and materializing powerful song magic. Since it must be spun deeper in the heart than <EXEC_HYMME/.>, only a few Reyvateils are able to activate it. Furthermore, it consumes a significant amount of life force, and sometimes it can even cost the user their life. The Third Tower Reyvateils have been improved to deal with this song magic, and there is also a Hymmnos Extract that utilizes it.

Hymmnos Spells

edit

While the first two are poems, this is simply a spell. When you chant a spell that is preset in the tower, its effect is output. Anyone can use it by chanting the spell, but it cannot create new ones. It is used for downloading Hymmnos Extracts, bulkhead authentication, etc.

In the work

edit

In Sol Ciel, the setting of "Ar tonelico 1," only Reyvateils and some humans can use Hymmnos. The same is true in Metafalss, the setting of the sequel, "Ar tonelico 2," but since it is a society where Reyvateils are given preferential treatment, the general public is more aware of Hymmnos than in Sol Ciel. Once an Install Point appears (when they awaken as a Reyvateil), they can use it unconsciously. This is because it flows into the Cosmosphere when the Tower and the Reyvateil are linked. However, since they have not learned Hymmnos, they cannot answer questions such as, "How do you say 'happy' in Hymmnos?" To Reyvateils, Hymmnos is a way to express and feel emotions, and it is not something they learn, but something that comes out naturally when they open their mouths. It can only be used while linked to the Tower, and once the link with the Tower is broken (the Tower is suspended or goes out of range), they will no longer be able to understand it at all.

On the other hand, humans from Platina, such as the Knights of Elemia, can use spells such as the bulkhead opening codes, but no humans who use them fluently have appeared in the game (there are a few exceptions, such as the people known as "Tsukikanade" in the Hymmnos Musical, who obtain magical effects by drawing power from nature, just as Reyvateils obtain power from the Song Servers). During times such as the First and Second Ages, when Hymmnos was used frequently, there would undoubtedly have been many humans who could use it fluently.

As such, in the current in-game time (AD 3770s), there are very few who can use it fluently. The exceptions are Shurelia (Eolia) and Frelia, who are both Origins and Administrators and can use it freely. They are the ones who are most knowledgeable about Hymmnos in this world. For this reason, Shurelia often explains Hymmnos on her official website. However, she herself has said that her "favorite rhythm is Alpha rhythm," so it may be a little difficult even for Shurelia. Also, in Sol Ciel, there are still a few Tsukikanades who use Hymmnos in the current Third Era. Additionally, the 62nd Toukousphere states that "Hymmnos will be a required subject in the university entrance exams in Sol Ciel," so it seems that research into Hymmnos is still ongoing in Sol Ciel.

Outside the work

edit

In the real world, it can be assumed that the lyricists for Ar tonelico-related music generally have at least a basic level of Hymmnos ability. Shikata Akiko , in particular , has invented many words, and is the person most knowledgeable about Hymmnos in the real world alongside Tsuchiya Akira, the director who invented the Hymmnos language. There are also general game users who have deciphered the Hymmnos language in the game and in the music, published it on their personal fan sites , and even been introduced on the official website[3]  , as well as people who have written Hymmnos sentences on their own.

Aside from songs on CDs and the like, there are few records of it being spoken in the real world, and the only remaining record seems to be Shikata Akiko's greeting in Hymmnos at the Ar tonelico production press conference.
