Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of films). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). The Misguided is a 2017 Australian drama film directed by Shannon Alexander. The film features the feature film debuts of Caleb Galati, Steven J. Mihaljevich, and Jasmine Nibali, with Katherine Langford appearing in a supporting role. Langford's appearance in the film was released after her breakout role in 13 Reasons Why.
Synopsis
editThe film follows a young man who must betray his girlfriend to save his brother from a dangerous situation.[1]
Production
editThe film is set in Perth, Western Australia.[2]
Release
editThe film premiered at the Lone Star Film Festival in November 2017.[3] It received a limited theatrical release in Los Angeles in January 2018.[4] Distribution rights were handled by Indie Rights in the United States[5] and Umbrella Entertainment in Australia.[6]
Reception
editOn the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, The Misguided holds an approval rating of 60% based on 5 reviews, with an average rating of 6.5/10.[7] Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter praised the performance of Jonathon Johaljevich as "charismatic", but felt that the film "has its amusing moments but ultimately seems as aimless as the figures at its center".[8]
Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times wrote that "Alexander takes a realist approach to dialogue and performance, but the inexperienced actors lack the screen charisma to pull this off in a compelling way." Walsh concluded that "None of the trio of leads has the presence to carry the film, though [Steven J.] Mihaljevich displays a flicker as the dangerous sociopath Wendel."[9]
Bobby LePire of Film Threat criticised Mihaljevich's performance, but opined that the story had promise, with competent cinematography and scoring. The review concluded that "Sadly, because of Alexander’s handling of the cast, and just plain miscasting, every moment rings hollow."[10]
Patrick King of Cultured Vultures praised the film as "a layered character study" with "smart direction and excellent performances," noting that the actors "create real characters that we can study for a while."[11]
Emilie Black of Cinema Crazed praised the film's consistent pacing and visual style, crediting Shannon Alexander's involvement in multiple aspects of the production, and singled out Athan Bellos for his "strong performance." Nevertheless, Black felt that the film is "one that is easy to watch, but also, unfortunately, easy to forget'[12]
