I think one of the problems with it is that Tilly, McKean, Skinner et al say that they are not teaching British or Mid-Atlantic accents, but rather a proper or cultivated accent. Knight makes the claim that American listeners may hear World English as sounding British, but he notes that it includes American elements, differs in specifics, changes over time. Knight is also making a very specific argument that prescriptivist linguistics in bad, and actors should feel free to draw on their own linguistic heritage.
