A special "Paris-Dakar" edition was offered in addition to the base model. These early "airhead" machines have a defined cult following among adventure motorcyclists. in 1995 the introduction of the next generation oil-head model signaled a new beginning in BMW's lean into modern adventure models, with a succession of larger displacement models following, culminating in the new R1200GS. This model has modern engine management, ABS braking, and much more power than the humble original air-cooled models.

The new R1200GS has tackled the weight issue that some disliked with the previous GS machines. Although more powerful, the 1200 is approximately 1/10th lighter (dry weight) than the older machines. The R1200GS has a mad as a March hare doppelganger in the R1200GS Adventure model. The Adventure model is everything the base 1200 is and more for the committed backhigh and beyondstreet riders.
