As far as I'm informed, alumnus means without light. I guess its usage in the anglophone world has been done pretty much wrongly for a long time. For a Romance language speaker, it's hand to conceive this word not as "deprived from light" but as "the one who got nourished", specially because it cannot be used for the graduate, but for students under the process of being taught.
