  • Comment: First 2 sources do not even mention her at all, lots of unreliable sources or sources too close to the subject. Section 5 (Filmography) completely unreferenced. Needs more independent coverage of herself. In short: Less sources but better ones. CommanderWaterford (talk) 17:33, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

Early life and education

She lived her early life in Maryland and was interested in animation, influenced by films like Bambi, using programs like MS Paint, beginning in the third grade.[3][4] In 2007, she began posting art on DeviantArt under the pseudonym Vivzmind.[5] In May 2009, she released a five-minute film named "Why I Hate Phones", staring herself, in which she was the director and cinematographer.[6] Medrano later went to New York to study animation, joining a SVA pre-college program before enrolling in the school, her "dream college," in September 2010.[7][3][8][4] In 2011, Medrano would be a colorist for Michael Ruocco's thesis film, "Destiny is for the Birds" and an assistant for a thesis film by Zach Bellissimo titled "Blanderstein."[9][10][11][a] "Blanderstein" would go on to win a Dusty Award for "Outstanding Traditional Animation and Achievement in Traditional Animation Character Design," tying with "Destiny is for the Birds."[12]

YouTube and early work

In 2012, while in college at SVA, she launched her YouTube channel, with the pseudonym VivziePop, building on her dedicated "online audience" which had enjoyed her fanwork and original creations.[13][3] She was later described as "relatively well-known" online for her animation and artwork, some of which she shared on her YouTube channel.[14] Around the same time, she began working on a webcomic titled ZooPhobia, which she continued until 2016.[15][16][17] In 2013, she released a short animated film titled "Son of 666", and worked on an animated short by Joanna Davidovich titled "Monkey Rag".[16][18] In 2014 she released Timber, for which she won a Dusty Award in "Outstanding Achievement in Character Animation".[19][12][20] Medrano based Timber on the song Timber by American rapper Pitbull featuring American singer Kesha.[21] By October 2019, her fan animated music video for Kesha's song Die Young had over 50 million views.[17]

In 2013, she was a production intern for a November 2013 episode of P.O.V. titled "Listening Is an Act of Love."[22] She also worked on Dead Meat, a project by Maxwell Atoms, and various webcomics.[8] As for "Dead Meat," it was eventually shelved, with Atoms announcing in early 2020 that the project was shelved indefinitely due to expensive costs and contractual issues, calling it "pretty devastating" to him.[23]

In August 2014, Medrano graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a Bachelor in Fine Arts.[13][3] She began working as a freelance animator for two years, so she had enough money to begin production on Hazbin Hotel.[13][17] The series would be crowdfunded through her Patreon followers, allowing her to hire a small team to work on the show.[13][24] In the process, she collaborated with specialists so the show would have a "high production value."[13]

Career

Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss

In April 2018, the first trailer for Hazbin Hotel was released.[25] Medrano founded an animation production company, and animation studio, named SpindleHorse Toons to first produce animations in the Hazbin Hotel franchise, including the pilot of Hazbin Hotel and the spin-off series, Helluva Boss.[26][27] The studio would later produce "Bad Luck Jack", "Holidaze", and "Addict". Medrano would be the creator, director, lead animator, lead writer, storyboard artist, and character designer of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss.[28]

By February 2019, Medrano's channel had over 1.2 million subscribers.[3] By April of the same year, it was reported that views on her channel has been viewed more than 163 million times.[13] In an interview with Cartoon Brew, she noted that much of the Hazbin Hotel pilot was funded by money from her Patreon rather than income from YouTube's algorithm.[13] The company Horseless Cowboy assisted Medrano with voice work during the first season of Helluva Boss, with Richard Steven Horvitz and Medrano voice directing.[29] Lucas Bermudez of Screen Rant attributed the success of Hazbin Hotel as the sole reason for Helluva Boss being greenlit.[30]

In October 2019, the 30-minute pilot for Hazbin Hotel was released on Medrano's YouTube channel.[31][32][33] In two days of the pilot's release, the pilot had been viewed over 2 million times.[34] In November 2019, the pilot of Helluva Boss was released, also on her YouTube channel.[35][36] Helluva Boss takes place in the same universe as Hazbin Hotel,[37][38] but it has a different cast of characters and story. Medrano said that while both shows share the same setting, Hazbin Hotel is about redemption and consequences of past actions, while Helluva Boss follows "characters and societies that already exist in Hell" with the main focus being on the interpersonal relationships between characters.[39]

In February 2020, an animated Helluva Boss music video called "Oh Millie" was posted on her YouTube channel,[40] centered around Moxxie and Millie's loving marriage. The video features a song written by Parry Gripp, with vocals from Richard Steven Horvitz and Erica Lindbeck.

In July 2020, Medrano released a music video for "Addict," based on and featuring the Silva Hound song of the same name.[41][42][43][44] In August 2020, Hazbin Hotel was picked up for a full series by A24.[45][31] At that time, Cartoon Brew reported that the pilot for the series had been viewed over 41 million times and that her channel had over 3.6 million subscribers, noting that she "developed and produced her "original pilot without any studio involvement."[26]

In October 2020, the season for Helluva Boss began, almost one year after the release of the pilot.[46][47][48] Eight episodes for the season, which would be released on her YouTube channel, were ordered.[29][49][50]

In February 2021, Medrano told Insider that Helluva Boss remains independent of Hazbin Hotel, saying she intended to keep it that way as "long as the audience wants to keep seeing it," adding that they have "a plan for where the story goes and ends," noting that having an ending seems "surreal" to her due to the dedicated team working on the show.[4]

Other work

In January 2015, Medrano released a short music video set to Meghan Trainor's song, The Best Part (Interlude), which she had directed and animated.[51] In April 2015, the official music video for Jessica Reynoso's song, "Sing Along," was posted on YouTube. Medrano had directed and animated it.[52] In August 2015, an episode of Good Mythical Morning titled "The Five Nights at Freddy's Song," that Medrano animated, directed, and was a background artist on, was released.[53]

In January 2016, Sunflower Dead released a music video for "It's Time To Get Weird," which Medrano animated.[54] In April 2016, Medrano released a fan animation for the Owl City song, "Silhouette."[55]

From 2017 to 2019, she voiced various characters in Nico Colaleo's DreamWorksTV series, Too Loud,[56] including Sarah, a librarian,[57] in five episodes, and "Customer 1" in one episode.[58][59] She also worked on the show as an animator.[16][60][61] Madrano also voiced herself in a May 2017 episode of Doodle Doods titled "The Family Guy One," where she did doodles.[62]

In 2018, Medrano was one of the 90 animators for The Dover Boys Re-Animated and she also did work on "Mystery Skulls Animated."[63][64][65]

Beginning in 2019, she voiced the character Poopsie St. Pierre in three episodes of Colaleo's animated web series, Ollie & Scoops.[66] She also voiced Julia's Singers with Brock Baker in one episode of the series.[67] In January 2019, a re-animated version of Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue, which Medrano curated with Nico Colaleo was released.[68][69] In December 2019, she released a short animated film named "Holidaze," for which she was a director, writer, and character designer.[70]

In October 2020, Medrano released a short animation titled "Bad Luck Jack", based on her webcomic, ZooPhobia.[71][43] The animated short was nominated for for a Ursa Major Award in the Best Dramatic Short Work" category.[72][73] The Ursa Major awards are given in the field of furry fandom works and are the main awards in the field of anthropomorphism.[74][75] The short was also listed as a "Recommended Anthropomorphic Dramatic Short Work" on the the Ursa Major Award website.[76]

In January 2021, her interview in the documentary Hand-Drawn: 2D Animation Documentary was sent to Indiegogo backers.[77] In March 2021, it was reported that she was a partner of Redefine Entertainment, a management company formed by Jairo Alvarado, Tony Gil, and Max Goldfarb.[78][79] In April 2021, she voiced the character, Face Painter, in the Eddsworld episode "The Beaster Bunny."[80]

She is reportedly an animator in the upcoming animated film Dawgtown, set to be released in 2021.

Personal life

Medrano currently lives in New York and loves music, cats, animals, chocolate milk, and musicals.[27][8] She is Salvadoran American and is bisexual.[16][81]
