You may ask for advice on how to improve this draft at the Teahouse or on the talk pages of any of the declining reviewers. (The declining reviewers may advise you to ask for advice at the Teahouse.)
If this draft is resubmitted without any improvement or with very little improvement again, it is likely to be rejected, and it may be nominated for deletion, or a topic-ban may even be requested against further submission by the responsible editor.
Four months ago, a previous reviewer said that fewer sources but better sources were needed. This draft has still been reference-bombed with sources. I have not tried to review whether they are good-quality sources, but am assuming that most of them are low-quality sources. When a draft has 88 sources before being accepted, they are usually of low quality. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:49, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
  • Comment: First 2 sources do not even mention her at all, lots of unreliable sources or sources too close to the subject. Section 5 (filmography) completely unreferenced. Needs more independent coverage of herself. In short: Less sources but better ones. CommanderWaterford (talk) 17:33, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

Personal life

Medrano was born in Frederick, Maryland. She became interested in animation when she watched Bambi.[3] She began using art programs such MS Paint in third grade.[3][2] Her early art was heavily influenced by Invader Zim. She began posting art on DeviantArt under the pseudonym Vivzmind in 2007.[4]

Medrano moved to New York City and attended School of Visual Arts in September 2010.[5][3][6][2]

Medrano is bisexual.[7][8]

Career

Early work

Medrano launched her YouTube channel under the pseudonym "VivziePop" in 2012, building her dedicated "online audience", who enjoyed her fanwork and original creations.[9][3] As a result she became "relatively well-known" online for her animation and artwork, some of which she shared on her channel.[10] Around the same time, she started a webcomic titled ZooPhobia, which ultimately ran until 2016, ending so that she could find more time for Hazbin Hotel.[11][7][12] Medrano directed her first short animated film, titled "Son of 666" in 2013. She also worked on Joanna Davidovich's animated short film "Monkey Rag".[7][13] Medrano released her fourth year thesis film entitled "Timber" in 2014, for which she won a Dusty Award in "Outstanding Achievement in Character Animation".[14][15][16] Medrano named the film after the song by Pitbull and Kesha, and its score had homages to the song as well.[17]

Medrano received a Bachelor in Fine Arts and graduated from School of Visual Arts in August 2014.[9][3] She worked as a freelance animator for two years.[9][12] In October of 2014, she released an animated music video for the song "Die Young" by Kesha, which accumulated over 50 million views by October 2019.[12] She continued to work on her webcomic ZooPhobia until 2016, when she ended it in order to focus her attention on Hazbin Hotel. The project would be crowdfunded through Patreon, allowing her to hire a small team and collaborate with specialists so the show would have a "high production value."[9][18] It also allowed her to create merchandise for the show, thus leading to more funds.

Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss

Medrano released the first trailer for Hazbin Hotel in April 2018.[19] She founded the animation studio "SpindleHorse Toons", under which the pilot for Hazbin Hotel, the pilot and first season for Helluva Boss, and several animated shorts would be released.[20][21] Medrano serves as the creator, director, writer and character designer for SpindleHorse Toons.[22]

In February 2019, her channel had over 1.2 million subscribers.[3] By April of the same year, it was reported that total views on her channel had reached more than 163 million.[9] In an interview with Cartoon Brew, she noted that much of the Hazbin Hotel pilot was funded by money from her Patreon, rather than income from YouTube's algorithm.[9] The company Horseless Cowboy assisted Medrano with voice casting during the first season of Helluva Boss, with Richard Steven Horvitz serving as voice director.[23] Lucas Bermudez of Screen Rant attributed the success of Hazbin Hotel as the sole reason for Helluva Boss being greenlit.[24]

In October 2019, the pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel was released on her YouTube channel.[25][26][27] In two days of the pilot's release, it garnered over 2 million views.[28] In November 2019, the pilot of Helluva Boss was released on her YouTube channel as well.[29][30] Medrano stated that, while the two shows share a setting, Hazbin Hotel is about redemption and consequences of past actions, while Helluva Boss follows "characters and societies that already exist in Hell" with the main focus being on the interpersonal relationships between characters.[31][32][33]

In February 2020, an animated Helluva Boss music video called "Oh Millie" was posted on her channel.[34] It centered around Moxxie and Millie's loving marriage. The video features a song written by Parry Gripp, with vocals from Horvitz and Erica Lindbeck.

In July 2020, Medrano released a music video for Hazbin Hotel called "Addict," based on and featuring the Silva Hound song of the same name.[35][36][37][38]

In August 2020, Hazbin Hotel was picked up for a full series by A24.[39][40][25] At that time, Cartoon Brew reported that the pilot for the series had been viewed over 41 million times and that her channel had over 3.6 million subscribers, noting that she "developed and produced her "original pilot without any studio involvement".[20] Animation Magazine said that A24 was talking a "bold step" by picking up the series.[41]

On September 30, 2020, Medrano released an animated short film "Bad Luck Jack", based on her webcomic ZooPhobia.[42][37] The short was nominated and won for a Ursa Major Award in the Best Dramatic Short Work" category.[43][44][45] The Ursa Major awards are given in the field of furry fandom works and are the main awards in the field of anthropomorphism.[46][47] The short was also listed as a "Recommended Anthropomorphic Dramatic Short Work" on the Ursa Major Award website.[48]

In October 2020, the first season for Helluva Boss began, almost one year after the original release of its pilot. Eight episodes were ordered, all of which would be released on her YouTube channel for free.[23][49][50] Animation Magazine reported that the pilots of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss had been, collectively, viewed over 65 million times by October 7.[51]

In February 2021, Medrano told Insider that Helluva Boss remains independent of Hazbin Hotel, saying she intended to keep it that way as "long as the audience wants to keep seeing it", adding that they have "a plan for where the story goes and ends", noting that having an ending seems "surreal".[2]

In September 2021, Medrano spoke on a virtual stage at the Animation Exposé of the Ottawa International Animation Festival about creating Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss.[1][52] She was joined by Bryan Dimas, the Associate Producer of Development at Warner Bros. Animation and Co-Director of a group called LatinX in Animation.[53]

Other work

In January 2015, Medrano released a short music video for Meghan Trainor's song, The Best Part (Interlude).[54] In April 2015, the official music video for Jessica Reynoso's song, "Sing Along" was posted on YouTube, which Medrano had animated.[55] In August 2015, Medrano released an animated music video of "Five Nights at Freddy's Song" by Good Mythical Morning, based on the horror game Five Nights at Freddy's.[56]

In January 2016, Sunflower Dead released a music video for "It's Time To Get Weird", which Medrano animated.[57] In April 2016, Medrano released a fan-animated music video for the Owl City song "Silhouette" featuring ZooPhobia character Spam.[58] In February 2017, she shared an illustration of a Lego Joker, which Inverse called "grotesque-yet-adorable," saying it captures the "complicated love-hate relationship between the Clown Prince of Crime and the Dark Knight."[59]

From 2017 to 2019, she voiced various characters in Nico Colaleo's DreamWorksTV series, Too Loud,[60] including Sarah, a librarian,[61] in five episodes, and "Customer 1" in one episode.[62][63] She also worked on the show as an animator.[7][64][65] Medrano also appeared in a May 2017 episode of Doodle Doods titled "The Family Guy One".[66]

In 2018, Medrano worked on The Dover Boys Re-Animated and "Mystery Skulls Animated".[67][68][69]

In 2019, Medrano was interviewed for the documentary titled "Hand-Drawn: 2D Animation Documentary".[18][70] She also voiced the character Poopsie St. Pierre and one of Julia's singers in Colaleo's animated web series, Ollie & Scoops.[71][72] In January 2019, a re-animated version of Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue, which Medrano directed with Nico Colaleo was released.[73][74] Medrano released a short animated film entitled "Holidaze" in December 2019.[75]

In March 2021, it was reported that she was a partner of Redefine Entertainment, a management company formed by Jairo Alvarado, Tony Gil, and Max Goldfarb.[76][77] In April 2021, she voiced the character Face Painter in the Eddsworld episode "The Beaster Bunny".[78]
