Requested moves is a process for requesting the retitling (moving) of an article, template, or project page on Wikipedia. For information on retitling files, categories, and other items, see § When not to use this page.
Before moving a page or requesting a move, please review the article titling policy and the guidelines on primary topics.
Any autoconfirmed user can move a page using the "Move" option in the editing toolbar; see how to move a page for more information. If you have no reason to expect a dispute concerning a move, be bold and move the page. However, it may not always be possible or desirable to do this:
- Technical reasons may prevent a move; for example, a page may already exist at the _target title and require deletion, or the page may be protected from moves. In such cases, see § Requesting technical moves.
- Requests to revert recent, undiscussed, controversial moves may be made at WP:RM/TR. If the new name has not become the stable title, the undiscussed move will be reverted. If the new name has become the stable title, a requested move will be needed to determine the article's proper location.
- A title may be disputed, and discussion may be necessary to reach consensus: see § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves. The requested moves process is not mandatory, and sometimes an informal discussion at the article's talk page can help reach consensus.
- A page should not be moved and a new move discussion should not be opened when there is already an open move request on a talk page. Instead, please participate in the open discussion.
- Unregistered and new (not yet autoconfirmed) users are unable to move pages.
Requests are typically processed after seven days. If consensus supports the move at or after this time, a reviewer will perform it. If there is a consensus not to move the page, the request will be closed as "not moved." When consensus remains unclear, the request may be relisted to allow more time, or closed as "no consensus". See Wikipedia:Requested moves/Closing instructions for more details on the process.
Wikipedia:Move review can be used to contest the outcome of a move request as long as all steps are followed. If a discussion on the closer's talk page does not resolve an issue, then a move review will evaluate the close of the move discussion to determine whether or not the contested close was reasonable and consistent with the spirit and intent of common practice, policies, and guidelines.
When not to use this page
Separate processes exist for moving certain types of pages, and for changes other than page moves:
- Making an uncontroversial move – if you can, be bold and do it yourself! If you can't, see § Requesting technical moves.
- Renaming a category – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming a stub template – propose the move at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion.
- Renaming an image or other file – see Wikipedia:Moving a page § Moving a file page.
- Moves from draft namespace or user space to article space – Unconfirmed users: add
{{subst:submit}}
to the top of the article. See Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Confirmed users: Move the page yourself. - Merging two articles – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed mergers, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Splitting an article – make a request at Wikipedia:Proposed article splits, or be bold and do it yourself.
- Requesting that page histories be merged – list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge.
- Contesting a move request close – use the Wikipedia:Move review process.
Undiscussed moves
Autoconfirmed editors may move a page without discussion if all of the following apply:
- No article exists at the new _target title;
- There has been no previous discussion about the title of the page that expressed any objection to a new title; and
- It seems unlikely that anyone would reasonably disagree with the move.
If you disagree with a prior bold move, and the new title has not been in place for a long time, you may revert the move yourself. If you cannot revert the move for technical reasons, then you may request a technical move.
Move wars are disruptive, so if you make a bold move and it is reverted, do not make the move again. Instead, follow the procedures laid out in § Requesting controversial and potentially controversial moves.
Uncontroversial proposals
Only list here proposals that are clearly uncontroversial but require administrator help to complete (for example, spelling and capitalization fixes). Do not list a proposed page move in this section if there is any possibility that it could be opposed by anyone. Please list new requests at the bottom of the list and use {{subst:WP:RM2|Old page name|Requested name|Reason for move}} rather than copying previous entries. The template will automatically include your signature. No edits to the article's talk page are required.
If you object to a proposal listed here, please relist it in the #Incomplete and contested proposals section below.
- Prince Johan-Friso of Orange-Nassau → Prince Friso of Orange-Nassau — His name is spelt without the hyphen. www.koninklijkhuis.nl calls him Prince Friso. —Timeineurope 17:35, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

- Bracewell-Smith family → Bracewell-Smith Baronets —(Discuss)— The article is about the holders of the baronetcy, not about the family in general. Tryde 15:12, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

- Wikipedia:Don't overuse flags → Wikipedia:Flags —(Discuss)— I believe that the rename will encourage broader participation and more viewpoints that will lead to something that is actually guideline-worthy. The level of increasingly militant negativity on the talk page is quite distressing. There are very few WP guidelines (as opposed to essays) with names this negative. I'm hard pressed to think of any right off hand that begin with "Don't". PS: Other neutral names like Wikipedia:Flag usage in articles or whatever would be fine, too. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 07:43, 27 August 2007 (UTC) —— SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 07:43, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- The States → The Estates —(Discuss)— less ambiguous? —Ewlyahoocom 04:14, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- Massachusetts_health_reform_law → Massachusetts health care reform —(Discuss)—
Proposed move to the more general title Massachusetts health care reform
Reasons:
(1) There is an existing redirect at the proposed move title, and if agreed to, an administrator will be needed to accomplish the move.
(2) The article is about "health care" not "health"
(3) The original Act and Law are implemented, and terming the article with "law" or "act" ignores the ongoing regulatory and administrativie ativities

- Bengaluru → Bangalore —(Discuss)— The move from the original name "Bangalore" to "Bengaluru" was done without consensus or discussion. Although the city is supposed to be renamed, there is no official confirmation on any government website yet, and major news services continue to use the name Bangalore. Hence this request to move the page back to Bangalore until we have official confirmation and notable usage of the new name. Thanks. —Max - You were saying? 19:36, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Doctor Who story chronology → Timeline of the Doctor (Doctor Who) —(Discuss)— Less confusing name —OZOO (What?) 18:51, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Miscible → Miscibility —(Discuss)— More appropriate name. Actual page at requested new name was merged into existing page at old name, so cannot use userland "move"...need to preserve existing history of new-name page. DMacks 18:29, 26 August 2007 (UTC) —DMacks 18:29, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Nani (footballer) → Nani —(Discuss)— most common usage —// laughing man 17:06, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Superman: The Movie (film) → Superman (1978 film) —(Discuss)— Due to a series of improper moves/copies, this article currently has an incorrectly formatted title and cannot be moved to either of the valid options, Superman: The Movie or Superman (1978 film) because of conflicts. There is also a problem with the talk pages being duplicated on more than one page. The discussion is currently at Talk: Superman: The Movie (film). Previously, consensus seemed to be that the article should be Superman (1978 film) and these recent moves were done without reaching a new one. I would like the article and related talk page moved back where it was until a decision is reached and all unnecessary talk pages blanked. —Rhindle The Red 16:04, 26 August 2007 (UTC)

- Line of succession to the Luxembourgish throne → Line of succession to the Luxembourgian Throne —(Discuss)— The page was moved by another user without discussion, contrary to conventions, and an administrator is required to move it back. Whilst there is disagreement about what the adjectival form of 'Luxembourg' is - whether it is 'Luxembourgian', 'Luxembourgish', or 'Luxembourg' - Wikipedia:WikiProject Luxembourg has decided that standardisation about one or another is important, and that the chosen form is 'Luxembourgian'. The capitalisation of the 't' is uncontroversial, as it matches the lines of succession for other countries, as well as being the name before this move. —Bastin 11:43, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Galteemore → Galtymore Mountain — (Discuss)— This mountain appears on Ordnance Survey Ireland maps as Galtymore Mountain. A Google search yields about 11,100 results for Galtymore and about 1,200 results for Galteemore. —Timeineurope 12:11, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
- Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald → University of Greifswald — The shorter version is just easier, shorter and used more frequently, so I suggest a move with a redirect page form the long name.
- Free City of Kraków → Free City of Cracow —(Discuss)— The issues here are complex, and discussed on the talk page; but this is a proposal to move only the article on the early-nineteenth-century city-state, not modern Kraków.-—Septentrionalis PMAnderson 15:31, 25 August 2007 (UTC)
- Closely related to the 1815-1846 city status are the articles currently named Kraków Uprising and Grand Duchy of Cracow, on the revolt and the post-1846 Austrian successor state (Großherzogtum Krakau).-- Matthead discuß! O 15:50, 25 August 2007 (UTC)

- Residency → Residency (domicile) or something else —(Discuss)— Although the meaning of establishing or maintaining domicile may be the most important use, the topic and the article are not particularly encyclopdic and are outweighed by the aggregate importance of other meanings of residency presented at Residency (disambiguation). — AjaxSmack 14:23, 24 August 2007 (UTC)
- Taihu Lake → Lake Tai —(Discuss)— "Taihu Lake" is not the correct name of this article. The name Tài Hú literally means "Grand Lake" in Chinese (Tài for "Grand" and Hú for "Lake"). Naming it "Taihu Lake" will cause a redundency in the literal meaning. —supernorton 13:22, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

- Fooian national [ice hockey / bandy] team → Foo national [ice hockey / bandy] team —(Discuss)— Most national teams in Category:National sports teams are named such as Country Name national sport team. Three exceptions have been noted – the teams in Category:National ice hockey teams, Category:Women's national ice hockey teams, and Category:National bandy teams, where an adjectival form of the nation is used in place of the proper name. Besides the inconsistency with other sports, it can also lead to ambiguity (American is not exclusive to the United States) etc. The United States article was recently brought here, and moved with no objections; but, the move was soon reverted in order to match the rest of the ice hockey teams. I maintain that changing the ice hockey and bandy teams to match the rest of the sports in Category:National sports teams (including large categories such as Category:National basketball teams, Category:Davis Cup teams, and Category:National football (soccer) teams) is more important. For some of the more well-populated national categories, I've linked to the nation's encompassing national team category, for more references. I dislike group nominations, and, it looks like some of these may already have the redirects, and could be moved easily; but, in light of the move/revert that recently happened, this is the only way to resolve the naming issue as a community. -- Neier 05:48, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

- Wodonga City Council → City of Wodonga —(Discuss)— This move is to the correct name of the Local Government Area as is evident in the LGA's own website [1], and will bring this article's name in line with the 70-odd other LGAs in Victoria. I would have done this myself if not for the single bot categorisation edit to the City of Wodonga redirect page. —Thylacoleo 05:57, 23 August 2007 (UTC)
- Raccoon → Procyon (genus) —(Discuss)— If one looks at the edit history and comments on the talk page, one can see that the Raccoon page attracts a lot of people who are interested in the Common Raccoon that we all know, not the genus Procyon. People edit the Raccoon page as if it was the Common Raccoon page. I thought the best solution would be to rename the page something a bit more scientific, such as Procyon (genus) (there is already a page for Procyon the star), but User:The Tom reverted my good faith move. Any objection? —Speciate 01:52, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

- Sinfonia antartica → Symphony No. 7 (Vaughan Williams) —(Discuss)— Standard practice as per WP:CM to name a symphony as a symphony in article name not a subtitle. Centy – – 20:50, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Ulster Scots language → Ulster Scots (linguistics) —(Discuss)— Ulster Scots is apparently not generally considered to be a separate language. The (linguistics) modifier is already used elsewhere in cases where the dialect/language status is disputed, e.g. Cantonese (linguistics). —Ptcamn 19:41, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- History of South Africa in the Apartheid era → Apartheid —(Discuss)— The current title of this article is misleading. It refers to the lenghty part of history of South Africa during the so called apartheid era without any link to the word "apartheid". There is no separate article entitled simply the "Apartheid" in English Wikipedia, like there are in most non-English other ones; just the redirection to this very article creating vicious circle. It causes lots of confusion in the so called "apartheid allegations series", especially in the Allegations of Israeli apartheid mess. —greg park avenue 17:07, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

- Aleksandrów Commune → Gmina Aleksandrów, Biłgoraj County — Disambiguation - there are two communes in Poland called Gmina Aleksandrów, therefore the Biłgoraj County distinguisher needs to be added. Whether to use the convention Gmina Xxx or Xxx Commune has in the past been controversial, but recent suggestions favouring the former have not been contested (see Talk:gmina and Category Talk:Gminas of Poland). —Kotniski 22:12, 21 August 2007 (UTC) See also Talk:List of communes in Poland--Kotniski 08:56, 22 August 2007 (UTC)
- Wilhelmstraße → Wilhelmstrasse —(Discuss)— There was a move discussion about this in June 2006, closed as a move to Wilhelmstraße
Wilhelmstrasse; do not revert. Now reverted without discussion by a single editor. This street is very well known in English, and we should spell it as English does. —Septentrionalis PMAnderson 21:13, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

- Android 17 → Artificial Human 17 —(Discuss) — Just like the Artificial Human 18 article, Artificial Human 17 is the more common name dispite the usage of Android in the English dubs and English manga. The Japanese term for this is Jinzō'ningen, which commonly trasnlates as Artificial Human. In the manga, the reason they used Android was to follow the anime. In Dragon Ball volume 6, when they met Artificial Human 8, Viz translated it as Mechanical Man, which is proof that they were following the manga. It should also be mentioned that Artificial Human 8 was actually an Android, and was never human, unlike 17 and 18. In the Dragon Ball series, 17 and 18 were run away humans who were captured by Dr. Gero and experimented on. Thus this makes them cyborg's and not Androids at all. After the defeat of Cell (Dragon Ball), they just call them 17, 18, etc... Ryu-chan 18:47 20 August, 2007 (UTC)
