Please feel free to leave me a message. I will generally respond to comments I believe are emergent on your talk page; most often, I respond to casual commmentary here. If you prefer, we can continue a discussion on your talk page, just let me know.

I appreciate hearing from individuals who have found mistakes (spelling, etc.) in my posts; these turn up all to often, as I tend to type very fast and not catch spelling mistakes my edits. If you find an error, you may get an indulgence. (WikiSins only!)

As a theology professor and scholar of Roman Catholicism, I am happy to answer questions about the Church. Be warned that my answers to questions about the Church always reflect the Church's official position, but are often long!

It's important to remember: I'm not a Catholic, I'm a scholar of Catholicism.

Block evasion on Jeffrey Vernon Merkey

Hi Essjay,

I haven't chatted with you before, but I see you've been active in the IP blocklist recently. A fellow named Jeff Merkey has been aggressively editing the article about himself, generally violating the autobiography guideline (but also WP:NOR, WP:NPOV, and so on). Anyway admin User:Fvw blocked Merkey under the account User:Gadugi. Merkey has come back with some sockpuppet edits, I think maybe some blocked as well. Tonight he started repeating his same edits unders User:137.118.252.209 and User:CowboyLawyer (I suspect the latter resolves the former IP, but am not an admin to check). Derivative

Hi Essjay, I saw you reverted the edits on Derivative. That user tried a copy paste move though, so could you please delete the page he moved it to? I'm not so sure a move is in order at all, but the way he did it was wrong, as far as I can tell... --JoanneB 10:14, 1 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! --JoanneB 10:24, 1 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Bibby vandal

Thanks for the help here. Any chance of a range block on 213.106.96.27 etc - he reincarnates as fast as I block. I'm not confident enough to try a range block? --Doc (?) 11:25, 1 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Mediation Committee

I'd like to get better acquainted with you, especially if we're going to working together on the Mediation Committee.

Please drop me a note on me user page and/or contact me on the #wikipedia IRC channel. Uncle Ed 11:52, 1 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

I'm there now. -- Essjay · Talk 11:54, 1 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Barbiero

Let me start by saying I'd be grateful for any help you can offer.

To get the full flavour of what I've been dealing with, you need to read the archives of the HotI Talk: page. I won't bore you with the details, in case you're not interested, but I'm tired of doing a ridiculous amount of work (including extensively bothering people outside the project) to back up everything, down to the meaning of "is" - the fight over the caption of the maps (where I finally had to contact the person who drew it to veryify to Barbiero's satisfaction that I had labelled it correctly) was both illuminating, and typical.

Here's my recent note to Tony Sidaway:

Unprotecting History of the Internet seems to have been a bad move. Barbiero went back to inserting his personal Original Research POV there. Not content with that, he completely discarded the entire PARC Universal Packet article, including a long list of references, etc which were given nowhere else. He then created a long list of errors by inserting some of the PUP material directly into Xerox Network Services - a fairly different, although related, protocol family. Finally, he went to Routing Information Protocol, and through his lack of knowledge, deleted some correct material, and introduced several more errors.
I do not have the time or energy to carefully filter out all the errors this person introduces. About 20% of his material is useful/interesting, but it's simply overwhelmed by the errors, personal original research, etc, etc.

I would be more than happy to stay away from Barbiero, if he will return the favour. However, his aggressive attempt to totally rewrite the article to follow his original research incorrect POV cannot stand. Noel (talk) 12:14, 1 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

That's fine with me (I thought that was kind of implied in the "grateful for any help you can offer", above). Noel (talk) 12:25, 1 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Re: Hey

Thanks man. My stress level has actually started to drop recently. :) When i saw the "I'm in" picture on your talk, I was thinking more like "I'm a cabal member" then "I'm online". Heh. --Phroziac(talk) 16:14, 1 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Glad to hear it! Oh, and: I am in the cabal...Fnord! -- Essjay · Talk 22:06, 2 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

UsernameBlocking

Having reviewed the block log, I see you've been been on a bit of a {{UsernameBlock}} spree. Most seem reasonable, but tell me, how are "Death omen" and "AutobotNo1" inappropriate? What's with "The Big W!!!!", who apparently has no contributions. and has been accused of being a sockpuppet of both Willy and MARMOT...? I won't unblock, as there may be something I'm not seeing, but this seems wrong to me. (Crossposting to WP:AN#User:Kswheels.) ~~ N (t/c) 16:30, 1 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

(Also answered in more depth on Nickptar's talk)
Why yes, I did go on a spree; I checked the creation log and noticed that it didn't seem that anyone had done any in a while. Death omen I admit was overzealous; I've unblocked with a note that the username might be seen as a death threat by some. Autobot is a potential unsanctioned bot; if it was supposed to be a legit bot, I'm happy to unblock after it is listed in the appropriate place to seek sanction. The Big W!!! fits the profile for a Willy sleeper; if the user is legit, he/she can email me and I'll unblock. -- Essjay · Talk 22:10, 2 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

The problem, as I detailed on the noticeboard posting, is that users are more likely to be disturbed by your block and leave Wikipedia in disgust than email you - and you would hardly know it, eh?
Usernames like "The Big W" are at least as likely to belong to legitimate contributors as to Willy, and especially now that we have Curps's autoblocker, it's better IMHO to let Willy have a bit of easily-reverted fun than to scare off a potentially great contributor. The "Autobot" one, I questioned because it probably isn't a bot, but a legitimate user completely unaware of the potential for confusion; but I guess you can be excused for not understanding the reference. If usernames might confuse other editors, those other editors should adapt; the innocent users shouldn't be jumped on.
I would also like to question your blocks of "T.Jiang" (I know some attack accounts against Jiang were being created at the time, but this sounds innocent), "Nazira" (despite containing "Nazi", it's an Arabic name), and "Lupin4tonkslegolas4kendell" (a fanfic reference; I can't in the slightest fathom how this could be considered inapproprate aside from the length). Methinks you're going a bit overboard. ~~ N (t/c) 22:21, 2 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Esperanza stuff

Redwolf asked, me to be admin gen again yesterday, I informed him that is not particularly pragmatic or possible at this juncture. It seems that he is feeling a bit overwhelemed after recieving several new resonsipilities at once. I recommeneded that if he wishes to step aside he should consider you as a replacement. I hope you will consider it if he makes such an offer and if he does not I would like to urge you to run for the Advisory Committee instead. Thanks. -JCarriker 23:00, 1 October 2005 (UTC)Reply

Séamus Heaney

Hi there

I left a note on Talk:Seamus_Heaney about a comment in the article which I feel is deeply unfair to Heaney and suggested that if it couldn't be substantiated it should be removed. As nobody has supported it, perhaps you could remove it? I'd appreciate it as in my view Séamus Heaney is a decent and fair-minded man and it's not right that the article about him should imply otherwise.
