Incident in a lay-by
editSome time back in the 1990s Keegan was assauled with a baseball bat by two people; he was parked up in a lay-by in Reigate in his Range Rover and was apparently sleeping at the time. This was a minor news item but it was pre-internet so I can't find a definitive source. It's an odd little incident that seems to have sparked a lot of rumour.
One newspaper ran a cartoon with keegan saying to his assailants "on me head son"
- Rumour is right - I reckon this whole thing is an urban myth. I've heard wildly varying dates for the occurrence of this "incident" (mid 1980s through early 1990s), and the details of what supposedly happened are pretty vague as well. (In one of the versions I heard, Keegan was the one wielding the baseball bat!) There's usually a strong implication that homosexual shenanigans were on the agenda.
- Without a definitive source (even a newspaper cutting) to go on, I'm happy to leave this one to the conspiracy theorists. :-) 203.46.65.16 11:04, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- The incident definitely occured some time in the early 1990's and was reported in the Surrey Mirror at the time (but sadly I don't keep reference copies). The car park is still referred to by some as the Kevin Keegan Car Park for want of a better name. Pontificake 22:32, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
Yes, it's true...
FORMER ENGLAND SOCCER CAPTAIN ASSAULTED, ROBBED. 9 April 1991 Reuters News
LONDON, April 9, Reuter - Former England soccer captain Kevin Keegan was assaulted with a baseball bat and robbed of cash as he slept in his car overnight, police said on Tuesday.
Keegan was returning to his home in Hampshire, southern England, from a trip to Spain and had pulled off a motorway crossing the neighbouring county of Surrey to sleep. But about midnight he was woken by two men. One hit him on the head and mouth with the bat and demanded cash. Keegan handed over an undisclosed sum, Surrey police said, and the two men fled on foot.
Keegan managed to drive from the car park and stopped a passing motorist who informed the police. The former Liverpool star and England soccer captain was taken by ambulance early on Tuesday to a nearby hospital where doctors stitched cuts to a head wound and then released him.
THREE JAILED FOR ROBBING EX-FOOTBALLER KEVIN KEEGAN. 10 August 1991 The Independent - London
Three men were sentenced to three years in custody yesterday for robbing Kevin Keegan, the former England football captain, after attacking him with a baseball bat while he lay sleeping in his Range Rover. The former Liverpool star had parked in a car park off the M25 at Reigate Hill, Surrey, to rest during his drive back from a holiday in Spain, Guildford Crown Court was told. Martin Bell, 21, of Southdown Road, Newhaven, East Sussex, Edmund Poole, 20, of South Road, Newhaven, and Darrell Briggs, 18, of Beresford Road, Newhaven, all admitted robbery. It was ordered that Poole and Briggs should serve their sentences in a young offenders' institution while Bell should be sent to prison.
Quotes
editThis section has suddenly become rather overblown. Surely only a few of the more "amusing" quotes need be given here with a link to Its a Funny Old Game where most of them have come from. Daemonic Kangaroo 13:27, 18 January 2007 (UTC)
- I agree, I was considering doing it myself and decided it would be best to come to the talk page. We can leave the first... 6 or so and then just have a link to the rest. -Painezor TC 23:28, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

GA failed
edit- Lead needs to be more substantial. Keegan has had a very long and successful and at times controversial career. Needs to show career evolution
- For such a famous person in a football mad country, I would be surprised if there was not some info about his early years. The bio starts at age 20, and there is no information before this. ( Done - Toon05 15:18, 29 August 2008 (UTC))
- Liverpool section
- Needs a lot more sources
- Journalistic style of writing is not appropriate for an encyclopedia. eg, "albeit with a completely mis-hit shot which was all he could muster after he miscontrolled a pass from Peter Thompson. He quickly established himself as a brave, pacey, incisive goalscorer and fan favourite" - should be sourced or attributed to commentators or a group of commentators. ( Done - Toon05 15:22, 29 August 2008 (UTC))
- Don't user contractions
- Redundant commentary like "more importantly for Keegan, started him on his way to 63 caps" - This is implicit as it is his debut. ( Done - Toon05 15:18, 29 August 2008 (UTC))
- Use of nicknames like "Tosh" - inappropraite ( Done - Toon05 15:18, 29 August 2008 (UTC))
- POV unattributed comments "They were Liverpool's Dynamic Duo"..."Sadly for Keegan" ( Done - Toon05 15:18, 29 August 2008 (UTC))
- Hyperbole "Keegan scored two as Liverpool hammered Newcastle United 3-0 - his first a terrific chest-down and volley from 25 yards after Brian Hall had fooled the Newcastle defence by diving under the ball; his second a far-post stretch and tap-in after great work down the flank between Tommy Smith and Steve Heighway." ( Done - Toon05 15:18, 29 August 2008 (UTC))
- There are more examples of emotional adjetives and hyperbole
- If he was twice Euro PLayer of the year at Hamburg, then one would expect more than one short para, especially if they reached the final of the European Cup. ( Done expanded section for all of his time in Germany - Toon05 15:18, 29 August 2008 (UTC))
- Southampton section unsourced. First para is POV, and so forth. Speculation about infigithing needs to be sourced, per BLP.
- More hyperbole like "was adored by the supporters"
Onto the coaching career
- The England coaching part definitely needs to be more detailed, especially with the media over there and the Euro2000 kerfuffle.
- Some stints are very thinly covered.
- personal life needs to be better integrated..Put related events together into a paragrpah.
Lead will need changing
edit"At every club that he managed, he won promotion as champions in his first season" - he can't do that with a club already in the Premier League. Unless he wins the title this year(!) it will be completely inaccurate anyway. 81.158.0.164 (talk) 16:37, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
- The statement is still true; this is not his first season with Newcastle.--Mas 18 dl (talk) 19:59, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Won his first game under Stoke
editCan this be edited straight away please as the 2nd half has just kicked off and we don't want to jinx anything or tempt fate.
Never mind I can see this has now been done.
Irish descent category
editNot cited as usual. Can this be removed or sourced? And no, a name does not prove ethnicity. Just ask Eddie Murphy or Will Smith..... 86.17.211.191 (talk) 02:15, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
- I've cited it in the Early years section, it's in his autobiography. For the record. - Toon05 15:20, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Joey Barton
editI think its relevant to this page to include Keegan's attitude regarding Joey Barton, as it seems most football people's is to despise the player, while Keegan's is to try to rehabilitate the player —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mirrorballman (talk • contribs) 22:23, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
- To be quite honest, your POV-pushing] is really not helpful. You seem to have strong feelings about this issue, so I recommend that you avoid editing Joey Barton-related articles, as it's not helping the encyclopaedia. The text you added to this article was massively [[WP:UNDUE|undue weight], and it's not really worth a big mention in an article like this one. Perhaps a passing mention about Keegan keeping faith with Barton, referenced from reliable sources, but cetainly not going into detail about what "Lawro" said. - Toon05 15:07, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
Whether you like him or not, Mark Lawrenson is a well-respected critic who appears (and has for the last 10 years) weekly on MOTD and I think his critisism of Keegan is worth including. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mirrorballman (talk • contribs) 16:13, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Newcastle Utd job
editAccording to the official page he hasn't been sacked, thouhg it doesn't say hes not walked off in a huff http://www.nufc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10278~1383045,00.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.174.154.198 (talk) 17:55, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Hearts appearance
editI took the liberty of removing Keegan from Category:Heart of Midlothian F.C. players as he only guested for the club in a testimonial. I would contend that inclusion in these player categories is only appropriate for those who have actually been officially signed or loaned by the club in question, or at the very least, those who have made trial appearances in proper competitive matches. Jellyman (talk) 14:49, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Isn't it a shame
editthat the article has no pictures of Keegan as a player? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.1.133.70 (talk) 19:53, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
- To be fair, short of using a screen capture from old television footage of him playing, it would be extremely hard to source shots of him playing; the professional photographers and the newspapers that paid for their pictures are unlikely to give them away for free, and there probably weren't many fans allowed into the grounds with long fast telephoto lenses. -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 14:44, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
"I would love it"
editThe article mentions his infamous "I would love it if we beat them" meltdown, but I think it would benefit from some context. I mention this because I can barely remember why he had his meltdown, and I can't find a good source on the internet. I think had something to do with Man U manager Alex Ferguson implying in an interview that other teams fielded deliberately substandard sides against Newcastle United because they wanted to save their best players for matches against Man United, but I can't remember. As it stands the quote just seems to come from nowhere. -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 14:44, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
Early Years
editThere appears to be a difference of opinion regarding Kevin Keegan's senior school. The article currently refers to Armthorpe Comprehensive School but briefly referred to St. Peter's in 2011 before being amended. Although he may have attended Armthorpe school at some point, I can personally vouch that he attended St. Peter's Roman Catholic High School in Cantley Doncaster for several years from the age of 11. I attended St Peter's around the same time and saw Keegan daily. There are references to Keegan having attended St Peter's by other former pupils and on the Wikipedia page for the Catherine McCauley School (new name for St Peter's). My recollection is that Keegan may have completed his senior education at Doncaster College of Technology. Nextstar7 (talk) 13:56, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Driving Ban
editThe test under personal life says: " Keegan had three points added to his driving licence after being caught doing 36 mph in a 30 mph zone on the A69 road in August 2008. This brought his total to 12 points and he consequently received a six-month driving ban". Can this be correct? doing 36 mph in a 30 mph zone would get him banned?I find this difficult to believe, otherwise sounds like the UK police or road cams have their priorities in the wrong place. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Indieshack (talk • contribs) 13:49, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
- There is a ban for reaching 12 points on the license, not just for that specific offence, which carried 3 points. He must have committed other offences before this to give him the existing 9 points. Keith D (talk) 17:13, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

one of the best players of all time?
editit's untrue to say that Keegan is widely regarded as one of the best players of all time.
He was a strong competitor who made the most of his abilities, but he never features on serious lists of the best players of all time. 2A00:23C8:A20C:2901:60CE:7FE:3A73:D5BF (talk) 20:25, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
