Should be "Malmö University College"
editMalmö is definitely not a university so far, though they aim to be in the future. They are an independent academic institution (or cluster of institutions) - to the students the issue whether it's a university is probably moot, but MH does not drive doctoral research on a wide enough basis to be called a university. Their staff and alumni like to style it a university, especially on the academy's pre-printed letter paper and on personal cv's (both opf those in English), but no. It should read Malmö University College . though that's a bit awkward to certain English-speakers.
There are many academic institutions in Sweden, and in other Scandinavian countries too, that are called högskola/højskole. Most of them are independent on a day-to-day vbasis and set their own directions, but are not full universities: the larger ones occcupy a kind of middle ground between specialized training colleges and universities. Stockholm Univwersity was called Stockholms högskola until 1960 when it became a state-run institution - from its inception in 1878 it had been a private foundation - though the idea of fusing it with other academies in Stockholm to form a university had been around since the thirties. I guess the authorities saw that by 1960 it was de facto a university, as large as the others in the country.Strausszek (talk) 21:04, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
- Surely if it calls itself Malmö University then that's what the article should be called - not University College. 86.155.65.123 (talk) 22:20, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
- It calls itself a University, but it is not a university. And Malmö högskola (as the Swedish name is) is not allowed to call themselves Malmö universitet (Malmö university in Swedish). A lot of university colleges in Sweden likes to call themselves "university" in English, but that doesn't change the fact they are just university colleges and not universitys. 130.243.240.244 (talk) 10:35, 21 May 2009 (UTC)
- Precisely, 'university' is no catch-all title and in many countries it is effectively a privilege given by public authorities. In Sweden all universities used to be state-funded, though not subject to close scrutiny by the government. Private academies properly called universities don't really exist in Sweden (with the chief eception of Chalmers University of Technology at Gothenburg), and that's why Stockholms Högskola received the title university when it became public-run. The City University in Stockholm could be an exception too, but I don't think they have much tetiary training, certainly not in a wide range of subjects. Most of the time when you hear of them it's for seminars and symposia and I think they're using the university label in much the same loose way as Malmö does (and never in Swedish). Removal
editI removed "In an international context, this makes it more of a University than a University college. Hence Malmö University." It sounds awfully lot like an opinion, and without a source it can't be stated like that in the article. By the way, all Swedish university colleges should probably be moved from the "university proper" title. They are not legally entitled to be called universities. /Grillo (talk) 11:35, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
University or University college
editThere is no organisation called Malmö University College in Sweden. There is an organisation called Malmö University and it must be this organisation this page refers to. The name of the page should be Malmö University. See the univerity´s own webpage www.mah.se/english

- There is no Malmö University either. University is a protected title and no college can choose to be called universities without a verdict from the government. That Malmö university college (the accepted translation of "högskola") chooses to do this anyway is highly problematic and actually extremely unprofessional. /Grillo (talk) 03:19, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
- See source (Högskoleverket). Yes, Malmö University College is listed among the universities and Institutions of Higher Education with the right to award postgraduate degrees (together with Mälardalen University College) but is none the less only a university college, not a full university. In Swedish it's called "högskola" and "universitet" is a protected title that can not be used without permission. It is highly problematic that obviously people from the university college's marketing department want to hide this fact. It makes you wonder what kind of institution of higher learning this is... /Grillo (talk) 13:56, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
- "'Universitet' is a protected title", that is most likely true, but is "University" a protected title in Sweden? -- Lavallen (talk) 06:01, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
- Probably not, which makes this possible. The situation is not unique. In Finland a university (at the time a högskola) used "master of ..." for an education that did not satisfy the regulations for "magister", the Swedish equivalent (a law suit followed, because students were mislead). Wikipedia should use the English equivalents of the official names, not the PR departments' misleading terminology. --LPfi (talk) 12:24, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
With regards to Wikipedia:Conflict of interest, it should be noted that Ms. Holm works as a project manager for The Information Office at MUC, see http://www.mah.se/english/About-Malmo-University/The-Information-Office/ Br, Jt (talk) 16:17, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
- Regarding the issue of translating högskola (as in Malmö högskola), given the fact that there is a legal difference between universities and university colleges in Sweden, this has been discussed any times before in WikiProject Sweden, see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sweden/Archive 1#University colleges and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sweden/Archive 1#College or University or University College?. In most cases where people have been unhappy with the official translation of Högskoleverket of högskola into university college, they have (just as in this case) been affiliated with the educational institution in question. If anyone wishes to give a "better" image of Malmö högskola in Wikipedia, instead use your time to expand the description here in a WP:NPOV way using suitable references, and write article on those current and former researchers of MAH who fulfill the notability criteria. For example, since the school of dentistry has existed in Malmö since 1949 (first as an independent college and then under Lund University), why not cover that subject more extensively, including creating biographies on key odontology professsors over the last 62 years? Tomas e (talk) 12:04, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
- An alternative approach is to name the article Malmö högskola. The boards of many Swedish university colleges have decided that their english name should be "x university", despite the fact that "Högskoleverket", "kk foundation" and other organisations do not like this. Some of these boards have however decided that they should use the Swedish name also in English texts. If the board of Malmö university college has taken such a decision, we may include that source in the article lead as an explanation. Mange01 (talk) 16:20, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
The article should be named "Malmö University". The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education does not list Malmö högskola as a "university college," and also refers to the institution by its official name, Malmö University. See http://hsv.se/highereducationinsweden/highereducationinstitutionsheis/listofhighereducationinstitutions.4.28afa2dc11bdcdc557480002332.html Cantaya (talk) 12:14, 10 October 2012 (UTC).
- Well, I'll be damned! That list did not look like that a year ago. Malmö högskola seems to have been succesful in putting pressure on Högskoleverket to list them under this incorrect and pretentious title! /FredrikT (talk) 16:01, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
- A follow-up: it should be noted that sv:Universitets- och högskolerådet (the Swedish Council for Higher Education), one of the central government agencies under the Ministry of education and which replaced the above-mentioned Högskoleverket in 2013, today (2014) lists the English translation of "Malmö högskola" as "Malmö University College" as can be seen here and here! It thus seems that the government has changed its policy on the official translation. Time to move this article back again? /FredrikT (talk) 11:17, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- It is unprofessional and deceptive, and local monitoring of universities and colleges in Scandinavia makes a perfectly clear distinction between universitet/university and högskola /university college or strictly vocational training school. Interestingly, the so-called Södertörn University is using the very same loophole; it was set up around the same time as Malmö UC, in the same manner and has a similar profile - a few local, well-established tertiary professional training schools (with some academic research) that had formerly been part of a nearby university (Stockholm and Lund, respectively) were grafted together with newly-initiated, loose "talk and social sciences" programs. Both of these two want to become universities but neither have had much traction with it so far. The main reason that the relevant authorities don't clamp down on their use of the title is because both of these UCs are the love-children of the social democrat cabinet of Göran Persson (1996-2006) and of regional lobbying, and neither politicians nor bureucrats want the dirt to hit the fan too hard on this issue. 83.251.170.27 (talk) 00:02, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
Ninth largest
editI've tried to find a verification of the "ninth largest undergraduate-graduate level academic institution" information - I can't find the figure in HSV's statistics, but it's probably there somewhere. Another problem is that there are various different measurements - HSV presents statistics on the number of registered students, the number of full-time students, the number of students total including full-time, part-time and distance students, the number of students who get a passing grade.... it's all a bit of a mess, which makes a statement like "ninth largest" a bit tricky, even with a source, unless it's specified. --bonadea contributions talk 17:12, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
- Being a university/university college is not a competition. Such numbers maybe make sense for the largest (or smallest), but Malmö is not even the largest in Skåne. -- Lavallen (talk) 15:59, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: moved. We should use the translation of "högskola" that is found in sources, rather than use our own. DrKiernan (talk) 08:13, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
Malmö University College → Malmö University – Malmö University is the official name of the institution. Using "Malmö University College" is misleading. - Support per WP:COMMONNAME. The proposed name is all over their English website and is more natural and concise. It's also the overwhelming winner of the Google test, though I concede that's not the best tool in this case. --BDD (talk) 18:55, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Discussion
edit- Any additional comments:
I am confused. Earlier the list said Malmö University College. The efforts to become a university have been refused many times. It seems there has been a change (because of changed legislation), but I think moving the article is premature until we have documented what happened in the article itself (or in an article about Swedish university collages). The institution might want readers to think it has been a university all the (modern) time, but we should treat our readers with history also. There should be a decision to cite, not only a list, which may or may not be correct and correctly interpreted. --LPfi (talk) 07:09, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
The Swedish National Agency for Higher Education is "the public authority that oversees higher education institutions in Sweden, " and I trust that the information on their website is current and trustworthy. Malmö University awards first cycle degrees (University diplomas and Bachelors'), second cycle degrees (one-year and two-year Masters') and third cycle degrees (licentiate and doctoral degrees). I don't think the distinction between "högskola" and "universitet" is as pronounced as it has been. On the Swedish list the terms are not even used, but the distinction is made based on which level of degrees are offered: http://hsv.se/densvenskahogskolan/universitetochhogskolor/adresslistaibokstavsordning/adresslistaikategorier.4.4dfb54fa12d0dded89580001181.html Cantaya (talk) 13:45, 24 October 2012 (UTC)
- More importantly, the distinction between university and university college does not appear to be recognized in English. See Category:Universities in Sweden. --BDD (talk) 18:28, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
