Third federal electoral district of Quintana Roo

The third federal electoral district of Quintana Roo (Distrito electoral federal 03 de Quintana Roo) is one of the 300 electoral districts into which Mexico is divided for elections to the federal Chamber of Deputies and one of four such districts in the state of Quintana Roo.[1]

It elects one deputy to the lower house of Congress for each three-year legislative session by means of the first-past-the-post system. Votes cast in the district also count towards the calculation of proportional representation ("plurinominal") deputies elected from the third region.[2][3]

The third district was created as part of the 2005 redistricting process and was first contested in the 2006 general election.

District territory

edit

Under the 2022 districting plan, which is to be used for the 2024, 2027 and 2030 federal elections,[4] the third district covers the entirety of the municipality of Isla Mujeres and 321 electoral precincts (secciones electorales) in the neighbouring municipality of Benito Juárez.[5]

The district's head town (cabecera distrital), where results from individual polling stations are gathered together and collated, is the city of Cancún, the municipal seat of Benito Juárez.[1]

Previous districting schemes

edit
2017–2022

The 2017 redistricting process assigned Quintana Roo its fourth district. From 2017 to 2022, the third district had its head town at Cancún and it comprised 242 precincts in the municipality of Benito Juárez.[6]

2005–2017

The third district was created under the 2005 districting scheme, from the portion of the second district corresponding to the urban area of the municipality of Benito Juárez: i.e., the city and resort of Cancún, which served as the head town.[7]
