Lucian Marin (also known as 'Cedrin', born 24 May 1990 in Bucharest, Romania) is a semi-professional football player currently playing for FC Sambra.

He can play as central defender, wingback or defensive midfielder. Occasionally he makes run-ups to help the strikers. Lucian is known for his smooth tackling technique and for his heading skills.

He tends to calmly speak his mind on the field, though sometimes he is not understood by his teammates he still gains their respect.

Club Career

edit

He started playing football during his childhood in his neighborhood with current teammate Mihai 'Cava' Cavaliuc. The two were the most important players from his neighborhood at that time and they went on playing for the same team, FC Sambra.

It is said that the key to his technique ability is because of his early training with tennis balls. Instead of a regular size 5 football, Lucian trained using only tennis balls to perfect his skills. That proved to be an essential step in his growth.

Even at an early age he had a wide perspective of gameplay and tactics, mainly the result of his addiction to Goal 3.

Dimitrie Sturdza nr.59

edit

In his youth years, he played for his school "Dimitrie Sturdza nr.59" for 53 matches. Back then he was a very defensive player, always being picked as a starter. His discipline on the field was outstanding, leaving his post only at corner kicks.

He played for the youth groups 1C through 8C. At the final stage of his youth career, while playing for group 8C, he helped his group become of the strongest in the history of Dimitrie Sturdza nr.59 school.

In his first three years the training consisted mainly of fitness, athletics, gymnastics and acrobatic exercises. The players were rarely given the opportunity to practice with footballs, but although Lucian had no pleasure training on those conditions, he still gave his best.

At the fragile age of 10, Lucian made his appearance in the Dimitrie Sturdza Class cup against players much older than him. Since the team did not actually have a very good youth coach, they could not win it.

He scored a goal in 2003 with an amazing shot from a distance of over 30 metres. The ball ended up hitting the crossbar and then going in the goal, the keeper was left with no reaction.

FC Sambra

edit

In 2005 Lucian transferred to FC Sambra for an undisclosed fee. Here he rejoins former youth teammate Bogdan Muşat and also childhood friends Mihai Cavaliuc and Cristian Hiriza. During his time at FC Sambra he gained his appetite for goals.

Lucian was given the number 8 shirt which he was pleased to receive, for it being his favorite number. His favorite training sessions include: crossbar challenge, 21, la mălai, americana, football tennis and miuţa.

Lucian Marin during a training session in 2009

On November 26, 2006 he suffered a minor ankle injury during a training session. Although there was no ligament rupture, Lucian had to recover a week before he could start training again.

Having no medical staff at the club, Lucian was careful enough not to follow Mihai Cavaliuc's diet, consisting of old cottage cheese and 'worn' pontinos. Although it had a great effect on his teammate, many players who tried it suffered briefly.

On May 25, 2007, FC Sambra drawed against Lovinescu Team, the match ending up with a penalty shoot-out. Eventually after several penalty sets, in which Lucian scored two goals and missed one penalty, the match was won by FC Sambra. After the game, Andrei Nistor, George Stoica, Gabriel Dumitriu and Ionuţ Bostan all signed contracts with FC Sambra.

The next day, Lucian's new teammate George Stoica arranged a friendly match against Beni & co.. The match was held at Politehtica Arena, on a hot and sunny day, even though it started at 10:00 a.m. and thus the game was frequently stopped by the referee for hydration. Blame it on the heat or on Bogdan Muşat's own goal, FC Sambra lost by three goals.

In May 2007, he played against Deadbeat Society on Lovinescu Indoor Arena. They won the match, Lucian scoring two goals, one with a shot from his own half and the second one with a folia seca.

In the summer of 2007, he joined his team in a training camp on rough terrain, similar to clay or slag. That significantly improved his speed and stamina. The camp lasted a month until the field went under construction.

On June 10, 2007, the team did a crossbar challenge in which Lucian became victor, after he hit it three consecutive times and eliminated everyone else. He secretly played a Helloween song on his phone as a lucky charm, while Bogdan Muşat used a Delinquent Habits song and Mihai Cavaliuc the Edge theme.

On July 19, 2007, Lucian managed to score a goal in the away defeat against Rapid Clejani.

In the middle of a training session on September 10, 2007, he took a fall on his right elbow, which could have led to a serious injury giving his fractured right shoulder in '98.

He defended his own half perfectly in a friendly against FC Mitshubishi on November 7, 2007. The match ended with FC Sambra's victory by 6-2, one of the goals conceded being an own goal by teammate Bogdan 'Muşi' Muşat.

He made several appearances in the amateur Lovinescu cup, although his team never won it. In the semi-finals he scored two goals, one with a powerful shot from his own half and the other one in the top right corner.

Lucian scored the only goal in the defeat against Frat Crew on May 5, 2008. The match was held at Eliade stadium on an awful pitch.

On May 24, 2008 for his birthday, he invited all of his teammates and organized a friendly match against local amateurs. Though it was a hot day, former superstar Matei 'Cesco' Marcu honored Lucian with his presence. After that match he retired from amateur football despite being offered a contract extension to FC Sambra.

On July 8 2008, he scored a goal after carefully avoiding the goalkeeper. He later on declared that he had dedicated his goal to Hakan Şükür, who then recently retired. In the second half he scored three more goals, one being from a penalty kick.

Recently he developed his one-two skill, which has proved to be a good thing considering his run-ups in the attack.

He scored a hattrick in December 2009 during an indoor tournament, unfortunately his team suffered a loss and was knocked out. His most impressive goal of the three was a volley from 20 metres.

While playing as a libero against the local McDonald's team, he scored once again after being set up by Andrei 'Calu' Nistor. In that same match, besides a goal, he also made an assist for the same player. The match ended up as a draw.

During a friendly match against Dimitrie Sturdza nr.59 reserve team, he managed to score a doppietta. He scored the first goal of the match after a personal run and the second goal was scored from a penalty kick.

"I wish one day to visit White Hart Lane Stadium, not as a football player, but as a football fan."

Lucian Marin regarding one of his favorite stadiums.

On January 17th, 2010, he scored a goal after some great one-two's from his teammates Mihai 'Cava' Cavaliuc and Bogdan 'Body' Cotorceanu. FC Sambra went on becoming winter champions that month.

Playing as a wingback against Yellowstone Shirts on January 31, 2010 he scored a hattrick, leading his team to a clear victory. Two of the goals were scored in the first half and another one in the second half after a mistake by the goalkeeper. The match was held at the Lovinescu stadium during rough weather conditions.

On February 3, 2010 FC Sambra suffered a disappointing defeat against The Working Class, in which he scored a goal. The team, including Lucian, played very bad, mainly due to frozen pitch. In any other circumstances the match would have been postponed, but nevertheless they accepted the challenge and ultimately their fate. If there's a lesson to be learned it's not to wear Nike Tiempo Natural III TF cleats on frozen pitch.

After a day's rest, he went back in training and almost suffered a knee injury in a game of 'la mălai', the knee cap making a click sound while he tried to tackle an opponent. After a few runs, Lucian managed to pull it together and train again. The youth team also participated at that training session. The pitch was still frozen, players falling down several times, fortunately no real injury occurred.

On February 6, 2010, Lucian scored two goals in the victory against the IT division during an indoor tournament. He scored the first goal with a shot from 15 metres and the second goal inside the penalty box, between the goalkeeper's legs. Although he played as a center back he assisted to several goals for his teammates.

He scored a goal on February 12, 2010, after a long pass by the goalkeeper. He volleyed the ball over the opponent without it touching the ground. The match was held at Moghioros Park, on a chilly weather.

"It happened in a split second, although a strange calm came over me at that moment. I wouldn't say it was my most impressive goal yet."

Lucian Marin on his backheel goal

After a break due to weather conditions, FC Sambra was challenged again on February 27, 2010. Lucian scored two goals and assisted two more. He scored his first backheel goal in an official match after a great pass by Bogdan Cotorceanu. FC Sambra clearly dominated that match, the short break seeming to have a good affect on the players.

On March 7, 2010 he scored yet another backheel goal and he also successfully took a penalty kick. In the last five minutes of the game Lucian tried to tackle an opponent, but ended up with a two-side sprained ankle. He will be out for 2 weeks.

After several successful training sessions, Lucian played his first friendly match after the injury on April 9, 2010. Due to recovering conditions he played as a striker and he became the topscorer for his team with 7 goals in one game.

On May 1, 2010 he scored his first goals in an official match against Barbeque Boys. Lucian scored 3 goals, one of them after a powerful shot at the top corner, being served perfectly by playmaker Ionuţ Bostan. The match ended as a draw during regular time, but FC Sambra lost in extra time. The game was held in Snagov Park.

He scored another goal in the defeat against The Darkskins on May 14, 2010, match held on Ghencea Stadium.

On May 28, 2010 Lucian and his teammates experienced one of the most balanced matches in the 2010 season, in which he netted two goals, one after a clean penalty kick on the left side. Two days later on May 30 he was again called up for a clear victory along with returning members I.Bostan, A.Nistor, G.Stoica and C.Marin. Lucian shot a perfect strike at the far post and scored a goal on the match held on Ghencea Stadium.

Lucian scored a hattrick on June 6, 2010 and later on stated that he was lucky enough to score two of the goals only by the goalkeeper's mistakes, but nonetheless a goal is still a goal no matter how you score it. He then went again and scored another hattrick on June 20, 2010 in the win against Strangers Team played on a typical hot summer day. This match also marks the return of goalkeeper Cristian Hiriza who recovered after his long-term injury involving his gluteus maximus.

His hattrick stream continued on June 25, 2010 aiding him team to a thundering victory on a rather difficult terrain forged by Leon, Lovinescu stadium's pitch maintainer. During the match he also tried a kick similar to Zinedine Zidane's volley but failed, he immediately kept his head high and mind clear under Ionut Bostan's shoutings of disapproval.

Apparently his goal appetite didn't stop him scoring more than three, which he did in the next match on July 4, 2010 managing to net four goals, including a perfect lob finish after two touches and also a penalty kick in the top right corner. He played under rough conditions having a cold together with sour throat, also the hot weather didn't boost his morale, but altogether he proved his sheer will power and played until there was only one victor.

On July 8, 2010 Lucian scored three goals for his team, two of them after corner kicks and one from a penalty kick. In the last parts of the game he suffered a minor ankle injury while trying to reach for the ball in mid-air, but it was nothing of concern. A small conflict rose involving him, Ionut Bostan and Andrei Nistor but it concluded peacefully, like true sportsmen. The match is also noted for the comeback of goalkeeper Gabriel Dumitriu after a long period of absence. The next day, on July 9, he was called up again, despite his injury, and scored once more four goals against Waiters United.

After many ups there was bound to be a down and it happened on July 13, 2010. The match was played on Ghencea Stadium under heavy rain and together with a light ball similar to a beachball, making it worse. His play wasn't impressive scoring once for both sides. Turns up it wasn't a good day for science.

The next match was scheduled on July 18, 2010 and was held of Regie Stadium. FC Sambra looked ran over in the first half by Keepers United but managed to maintain a cleansheet. The heat was striking down the players as they battled endlessly until the inevitable happened and the opponents scored. Lucian had a good start, scored a goal from the penalty spot, but in the second half he couldn't keep up the same pace. After the match he decided to take a break and work on his stamina.

Lucian returned to the field on August 28, 2010. He played well in the beginning, despite the penalty kick missed, but due to the late game hour he became weary near the final whistle. After the match he was approached by a reporter and stated: "First half very good, second half...I'm not like", showing the fact that he understand his mistakes.

After a demanding but unsuccessful match on September 7, 2010, he played once again in that same week on September 9, 2010 against old rivals, Oty's Henchmen, on Ghencea Stadium. FC Sambra had a slow beginning and was saved by goalkeeper G. Dumitriu's reflexes, who was in fantastic form. Lucian managed to score a hattrick, two goals from the penalty spot and a crucial goal after an assist from A. Nistor. The team dominated the second half and won.

On September 16, 2010, caretaker manager Matei Marcu sent the same line-up as the last time hoping for similar results. After a first half in which the opponents scored three goals and our side none, things weren't looking so great. During the break the manager lost control over the players, who threatened him and demanded his resignation. Seeing his teammates' low morale Lucian went determined into the second half and managed to pull one back for FC Sambra. He also stopped several goalscoring chances, but that wasn't enough and in the end they went home defeated.

Lucian was convened to play against old rivals Frat Crew on September 20, 2010 on Ghencea Stadium. Although he was tired after several events he played a brilliant game, scoring two goals from the penalty spot. His run-ups in the opponent's half paid in as he made an assist to T. Aneculei. He also had a chance to score another goal, but he ended up hitting the post after fooling a defender. FC Sambra won the game and everybody enjoyed the victory.

Lucian scored two more goals in the following matches on September 28, 2010 and October 6, 2010. He has gained good form over the past games. Due to rough weather condition the next matchdays will been postponed.

After more than a month since his last goal he finally put one in the net on November 6, 2010 with a shot from over 25 metres into the top corner. Despite struggling against a massive headache that night, he managed to tighten up the defense with many successful tackles and also helped the attack with several other goal attempts.

The week after that, Lucian played in 3 consecutive matches, including an Indoor challenge, managing to score 4 times. He also sustained some minor knee injuries due to his sliding tackles, but nothing unrecoverable.

Due to heavy snowfall the start of the new season has been postponed until friendlier conditions. The first match of the 2011 season was played on January 8, but FC Sambra suffered a severe defeat. The next game was held on January 22, 2011 and Lucian scored his first goal of season after a 30 meter run along the right wing. He played a good game, having more than one goal scoring opportunities.

The next two months Lucian entered in an indoor tournament against Teachers United, Lawyers Ltd. and various others.

  • The first game was scheduled on February 12, 2011 at the Lovinescu Indoor Arena. Lucian alongside several FC Sambra teammates played a good game, he alone scored four goals and managed to hold a draw.
  • The second match was held on February 26, 2011 and resulted in an overwhelming victory for FC Sambra, anticipated by good form from previous games. The no. 8 defender scored 7 goals impressing the audience with his finesse. There were three penalty spots decisions that the referee awarded us throughout the game and Lucian was the only one able to score from the spot with the utmost precision.
  • The next game was scheduled on March 24, 2011 in the National Indoor Arena. In this match he played attacking midfielder and scored four goals, although the mineral fields were depleted. Three of the goals were scored by dribbling the goalie one-on-one and another one from a corner kick.

Over the next month, weather conditions had improved dramaticly and the league has moved to a astroturf. He played his first game of the year on synthetic grass on April 7, 2011 against Lawyers Ltd. and scored two goals, the last one heavily contested by the opponents.

On April 9, 2011 FC Sambra challenged Students & Teachers United and succeed in a flawless victory, Lucian scoring twice for the penaly kick, one goal scored "cu bara".

He went on and scored a hattrick in the next game against Nestor Company on April 21, 2011, receiving many praises by his teammates. One of the goal was for the books, he tricked the defenders by being on-side and scored with a perfectly executed volley from 20 metres.

On April 28, 2011 Lucian scored an amazing goal against CMS Bucharest after dribbling two opponents on the right wing.

He played against Equilibrum Group on May 12, 2011 scoring two important goals and serving well for another goal. He volleyed a shot in the top corner goal using his quick reactions and pinpoint accuracy.

Due to a lack of communication regarding the venue on May 30, 2011, the team had to search for an empty field all the way to Cooperativei by foot, but had no such luck. The teams conveyed and rescheduled the match for June 9. On that day, Lucian and his teammates played great and won by a three goal difference. He managed to score two goals.

A couple of matches were played after that, in the last game of the mid-season FC Sambra suffered a severe loss. That was the last game of the first half of the season, the team enjoying a well deserved vacation afterwards. Some sporadic friendlies were played during the mid-season break but nothing of major magnitude.

The first match after an droughty summer was on October 6, 2011 held on Lovinescu Stadium. Since it was the first official match in over 3 months, managers were hoping for a perfect pitch, but the groundkeeper's, Leon, ambitions didn't stretch that far. Despite an horrible astroturf FC Sambra played a spectacular game, Lucian scoring two amazing goals and receive the Man of the Match award at the end of the game.

On October 13, 2011 FC Sambra played without some of its major key players and struggled for a draw against H.O.O.D Gangballers. Lucian played fairly well scoring one goal.

On November 6, 2011 FC Sambra during a match against The Working Class tried out a new player for the team, winger Lupes Adrian. Although victory didn't shine upon FC Sambra that day, the new player was accepted by the manager and signed for 2 years.

Football fans, November 27, 2011 is a day to remember, as this day marks the return of former superstar Matei Marcu for a full year contract with FC Sambra. You could cut the tension with a knife, every time he touched the ball the crowd went wild and the opponent were shaking in their boots. With sheer confidence and ground-quaking chemistry the team won by a great difference, Lucian scoring 5 times. Marcu's boots and lucky cork talisman are now on the top shelf of the team's historical museum.

On December 10, 2011 he scored 4 goals, confirming his good form. Two of the goals were scored from over 30 metres, getting much praise from his fellow teammates.

FC Sambra played against Teachers & Students United on December 17, 2011 and bagged another 3 points, but that was proven to be a very tight match. Lucian played defense well and also helped the attack by scoring three times.

The last match of the season, and also the year, was played on December 29, 2011 on homeground Steaua Stadium. With several returning players the team played a great game, Lucian scoring 2 times and once from the penalty spot. This last victory concluded a season with ups and downs but overall a good season.

He has yet to be called for the Romanian national football team.
