sources of information

Hi Becky, I am trying to set up a Wikipedia page on my grandfather Tang Zhe Ming. I took the information from 2 sources: 1. http://baike.baidu.com/view/195332.htm

It is my understanding that Baidu Baike is the Chinese language collaborative web based encyclopedia provided by the Chinese search engine Baidu (it is explained as such when you look up Baidu Baike). When you go to the site, all the information is written in Chinese, but if you right click it gives you the English translation. I pretty much kept to their translation but cleaned up the English. I wanted this information available to non-Chinese speakers because I am writing a Wiki on my father and I wanted to set up a link to my grandfather so they could trace my father's background.

2. A book published by the People's Republic of China's government, titled. "The Founding Generals of the People's Republic of China". This book is also completely in Chinese. ISBN 7-80109-984-2

I would appreciate your feedback. Thank you. IFTango (talk) 07:09, 16 August 2015 (UTC)

note that drafts do expire, per WP:G13, unless fresh new edits are saved every few months

Hi Becky, ran across this diff on a talkpage,[1] and wanted to let you know that drafts do get deleted when they haven't been edited for six months or so. There is a bot which puts out a warning-message to the usertalk of the originator of the draft, I believe a month in advance, see User:HasteurBot. People are free to leave their drafts kinda-sorta indefinitely, but they have to come by every three months or so and make a tweak, to reset the clock and thus avoid the deletion-bot. Just leaving you this note as an FYI, no action is needed -- the former draft in that thread above was already mainspaced, and is thus safe from the bot.  :-)     75.108.94.227 (talk) 11:55, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Regarding date correction

Hi Becky,

In an article Manorama, the date of death mentioned is 10 october, 2015, but according to Indian news outlets: http://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/regional/legendary-tamil-actress-manorama-dies-at-78/ and http://www.ptinews.com/news/6601331_Legendary-Tamil-actress-Manorama-no-more.html reported death time is 12:05 AM IST, so technically the person died on 11 Oct, not on 10 Oct as mentioned in the wiki page, can you please look into this, as it may be a trivial issue, but here is difference of date. I tried to change it, but it got reverted.

Thanks,

Work2win

Bot automation at Wikipedia:Today's articles for improvement

  Greetings WikiProject TAFI members!

Over the past two weeks, there has been extensive discussion on introducing bot automation to assist with maintenance of the Today's Articles for Improvement project. A bot has now been approved for trial and will carry out the weekly duties. The bots first run will occur around 00:00, 22 November 2015 (UTC) (midnight on Sunday).

If you have been assisting any of the weekly maintenance tasks, please refrain from doing so this week. The bot needs to be tested and proven it can do the job, and it only gets one chance per week. The tasks will include:

Updating the accomplishments and archiving selections is still done manually, along with daily tasks such as adding approved entries to the articles for improvement page. These will become automated in the near future.

We hope the bot proves to serve well, and by carrying out the routine housekeeping tasks we can boost the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the project. MusikBot thanks you for your service in helping with the weekly tasks in the past, and for your cooperation during this trial period :)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Winchester, Nevada and Enterprise, Nevada as nearby communities to Las Vegas, Nevada

I'm not the one who left the semi-protected edit request in Las Vegas on 14 March 2016, requesting the addition of Winchester, Nevada and rewording Enterprise, Nevada for consistency in the Nearby Communities section. (I also don't know who that person is.) But, I'm trying to understand what kinds of references would be necessary for the edit request to be accepted, or to include in the section the requestor wished to have edited? The article already contains links for Paradise, Winchester, and Enterprise (with references 12 and 13) in the header section, just before the table of contents, as comprising the Las Vegas Strip. As well, Winchester, Nevada cites that it borders Las Vegas city on the north.

I don't have a huge amount of experience editing Wikipedia, and I'm asking for guidance here to understand what should be done. Thanks! Aerowolf (talk) 20:29, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

@Aerowolf: Take a look at Reliable Sources. When responding to an edit request of a protected article, the editor making the request should make it clear that the request is appropriate. That generally means that an editor with the ability to respond shouldn't have to look around to find support for the request. If I saw a single reliable source that indicated the information in the request was accurate, then I might have responded differently. Where a requested edit goes beyond a simple addition, it might also be appropriate for an editor to gain consensus on a proposed edit prior to requesting. Then they could point to the related discussion.  B E C K Y S A Y L E 00:04, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

KenJackowitz

Hi Becky,

Thank you for your help with the error on The First Folio.

What I do not understand is, I never touched that section.

I created a new section below that section.

How did my contribution cause an error in the above section, please?

My contribution:

Lost Editions of The First Folio[edit] A copy of the First Folio was lost September 27, 1854, when the SS Arctic collided with the SS Vesta 50 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, and sank. Out of 400 passengers, only 85 survived. Shakespeare collector Aldon W. Griswold had purchased the folio, which had been shipped from Liverpool.

A first folio burned in The Great Chicago Fire, Sunday, October 8 - Tuesday, October 10, 1871. More than 300 people died in the fire, and an additional 100,00 became homeless.

Thank you!

Ken — Preceding unsigned comment added by KenJacowitz (talkcontribs) 01:17, 11 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi @KenJacowitz:, It appears that when you added the section "Lost Editions of the First Folio" (See Dif) you also changed the parameter "accessdate" to "access date", perhaps by accident.  B E C K Y S A Y L E 02:07, 11 May 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Colette Wong

Hi Becky Sayles! I saw that you recently closed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Colette Wong as Keep. I just feel this could be relisted and left open for a week more as there were 2 keep votes and 2 delete (counting nominator). In fact, I was going through the Singapore deletion sorting list an hour back and was looking for sources, when I noticed it was closed. If you don't mind, would you consider relisting it? --Lemongirl942 (talk) 10:42, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

@Lemongirl942: The basis SwisterTwister seemed to have for deleting was a lack of notability. The other !vote to delete also indicated inability to find sources. The !votes to keep identified specific sources to meet the requirements of WP:GNG. Because the subject minimally satisfies the requirements, I believe the consensus is to keep, and because there wasn't any other basis for deleting raised. I'm not sure what a search for sources will add to the discussion, given the two provided seem to establish notability. So I'd rather not go back to relist, but if you'd like, the article can always be nominated again at AFD and the previous discussion would be linked.  B E C K Y S A Y L E 12:12, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
Thank you. My concern is that one of the two sources quoted (The New Paper) is a tabloid which is generally not used for proving notability. Which is why I was looking for other reliable sources but was in the midst of searching when this was closed. I just felt this could have done with a bit of discussion. Would it be considered disruptive if I nominated it again? --Lemongirl942 (talk) 12:22, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
@Lemongirl942: You are probably more familiar with The New Paper than me, but if you believe it does not comport with wp:rs then that may be a legitimate reason for nominating again. Are you certain that in this context it should not be considered a reliable source?  B E C K Y S A Y L E 15:45, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
In most cases The New Paper is like a Singaporean version of Daily Mail (See [2],[3],[4],[5],[6]). It often relies on "tip-offs" for news, prints articles based on social media posts and publishes interviews with local celebrities who may not be notable. But in any case, I will look for more sources now before nominating again. --Lemongirl942 (talk) 18:03, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chel Hill

Hi Becky, I feel an article I've submitted may have been nominated by @WikiDan61 unjustly. The citing is valid--the person has articles confirming credit as well as physical album credit. Corrections have been made in response to his nomination, however, nomination has not been withdrawn.

My question is, what can I do to stop deletion? This is my first Wiki submission--any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.(ProEmcee (talk) 01:39, 8 June 2016 (UTC))

@ProEmcee: I would suggest that you take a moment and try not to respond every detail that comes up in the deletion discussion. Writing too much that is not specifically addressing the basis for deletion is distracting, and may weigh against you in your more important points. Start with understanding wikipedia policy, like this: Wikipedia:Notability (music) and Wikipedia:Notability. If you stick to the specifics in these, it may help you. The admin closing the discussion will see if there is a consensus about whether the subject of the article meets the criteria established in the relevant policy. The discussion seems to indicate that WP:SIGCOV may be important.  B E C K Y S A Y L E 02:18, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

The May backlog reduction drive, the usual coordinating tasks and preparations for the June election are keeping us on our toes!

May drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in last month's record-setting backlog reduction drive. Of the 29 people who signed up, 16 copyedited at least one article, 197 copyedits were recorded on the drive page, and the copyedit backlog fell below 1,500 for the first time! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

June Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz will occur from 12 June through 18 June; the themes will be video games and Asian geography.

Coordinator elections: It's election time again; how quickly they seem to roll around! Nominations for the next tranche of Guild coordinators, who will serve a six-month term that begins at 00:01 UTC on 1 July and ends at 23:59 UTC on 31 December, opens at 00:01 UTC on 1 June and closes at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. Voting takes place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June. If you'd like to assist behind the scenes, please consider stepping forward; self-nominations are welcomed and encouraged. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible; remember it's your Guild, and it doesn't run itself!

Crossing Rubicon's Notability

Hello Becky,

I recently created a page for the band Crossing Rubicon. I believe you edited to add the template saying that the band's notability is not proven. I added a few sources in hopes to add to the page and prove their notability. This includes two articles showing that they have participated in several national tours. I had a third article that consisted of a concert review that mentioned Crossing Rubicon opening for Motley Crue. I was curious if this is enough to prove the bands notability, or if there's something more I could do. I didn't want to remove the notability template if it's still being called into question, so I thought I should ask for your opinion.

Thank you, Becky.
Dan — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dan Hello Kitty McCarthy (talkcontribs) 07:51, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

@Dan Hello Kitty McCarthy: I see the sources, which seem like a step in the right direction. But WP:SIGCOV may be helpful. I would think something more than a straightforward announcement of a new album would more clearly establish notability. B E C K Y S A Y L E 10:44, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
That makes sense, though one of the articles I cited is to announce their album, the reason I cited it was because it mentions their touring with major bands. From the guidelines it seemed like a good way to prove notability since it mentions national tours as one of the criteria. "Crossing Rubicon has had an intense touring schedule in 2015. They started their tour from their roots in Connecticut, and then soon ventured within the Northeast to Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania. Crossing Rubicon has had the honor to share the stage with many well respected national bands. Crossing Rubicon was hand selected by Mötley Crüe in association with 99.1 WPLR to open for Mötley Crüe’s induction show at the Mohegan Sun Arena in 2013. Crossing Rubicon was also selected for the sole opening slot of Queensrÿche 30th anniversary tour in Hartford, CT. Crossing Rubicon has also played alongside Crossfade, Nonpoint, Saving Abel, Pop Evil, Rev Theory, Tantric, and Beatallica." I figured this might do it. I can get more articles if you think that would be good for the page. Thank you. Dan Hello Kitty McCarthy (talk) 18:24, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Romuald Andrade

A tag has been placed on Romuald Andrade requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Stefan2 (talk) 10:30, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion contested: Baba Hardeva ji Maharaj

Hello Becky Sayles, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I contested the speedy deletion of Baba Hardeva ji Maharaj, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: When translated from Hindi, it's evident that the subject is a god. I will move it to draft space. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. - MrX 13:01, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi @MrX:. I appreciate the advice, but I had already put the text of the article into Google translate, prior to tagging, to detect a language other than English and found the translation from Hindi unintelligible. I used G1 because even with translation it appears to be incoherent gibberish, instead of A1 because the subject appeared marginally identifiable. Perhaps you have a better translation? B E C K Y S A Y L E 22:52, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
Yes, it was virtually unintelligible, but I was able to get enough of a translation to see that the subject was a (Hindu?) god. I was able to pick up some other details that seemed relevant, so I thought it best to just move it to draft space. I'm not saying I'm right, but in my opinion, it didn't fall under A1.- MrX 23:55, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

The persian article

Hi Becky, regarding the Persian article you listed at WP:PNT, it looks like subsequently replaced the text with the google translation. In doing so you also removed the reference link - I don't know whether this was accidental or intentional. As described at WP:MACHINETRANSLATION, a machine translation of a foreign language article is not much use. The "not English" template provides a link to the translation for the purpose of assessing the article, but it is not intended to be used to replace the contents. I have nominated this one for deletion for two reasons; it is clearly promotional with no claim of notability. If you come across other foreign language articles in the future, I think it is best to list it at WP:PNT rather than adding any google translations. AtHomeIn神戸 (talk) 07:10, 28 June 2016 (UTC)

Zayn Wiki-Page Edits

Hi Becky

Hello, Becky Sayles. You have new messages at Becky Sayles's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

,

I've added two new notes to the talk page for Zayn. Can we get these edits updated? Is anything else needed to make these infobox changes? Topics are Info Box Correction + New Infobox Image. I have included a source and a new image that has been cleared to use.

Thank you.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Madison Kennedy, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page David Marsh. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Random Page in category mainspace

Hi I have been just checking some categories in the WikiProject Astronomy project and categories space - was there a valid reason. exercise in adding this to category main pages? I am a little interested as to why or where or how such odd items arrived, and where the idea/motivation might have been. I havent deleted more recent finds (I think I deleted one in geology) as I would like to know more about either the background or the rationale... cheers JarrahTree 06:38, 20 August 2016 (UTC)

@JarrahTree: I do not understand what you are asking. Can you clarify?  B E C K Y S A Y L E 21:10, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
My apology at this point I should have offered a diff, a few times I have read an edit history incorrectly (which I have done in the past) - at one of the locations I have found it was not your edit at all [7], please ignore, sorry about that JarrahTree 00:18, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
Nah found another [8] - why? what was the source of this? JarrahTree 00:43, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
@JarrahTree: Please explain, I don't know what you are asking. Why what? Source of what? B E C K Y S A Y L E 21:38, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
Wow - this is fascinating. I am asking, why did you put a random article template in a category main space page? Was there a source idea/template to doing this ? Where did the idea come from ? Was it from something? Look at the differences please, it has you and other editors placing random article templates in category space. I am trying to ask why, but do not seem to be getting very far on this JarrahTree 23:42, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
BTW your talk page is difficult to negotiate due to the size, in WP:AGF have you thought of archiving? JarrahTree 23:44, 21 August 2016 (UTC)
@JarrahTree: thank you for the clarification, the template allows for an editor to open a page within the category at random. The idea was to make it easier for editors to work on pages within the categories. I don't see what WP:AGF has to do with the size of my talk page, did you mean something else? I did archive in the past, but the OneClickArchiver seems to have stopped working and I haven't bothered to do it manually.  B E C K Y S A Y L E 00:12, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for your speedy clarification - it is that I have been trying to update geology and astronomy (and others) project tags on talk page and main space and the 'random tags' were themselves so random and so few relatively speaking, I was somewhat confused as to whether they really were just a passing fad at some stage or something else. As to archiving - your talk page is hard to negotiate - but hey the AGF was there in case there was a need to require sensitivity re talk page size JarrahTree 00:26, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors September 2016 News

Hello everyone, and welcome to the September 2016 GOCE newsletter.

>>> Sign up for the September Drive, already in progress! <<<

July Drive: The July drive was a roaring success. We set out to remove April, May, and June 2015 from our backlog (our 149 oldest articles), and by 23 July, we were done with those months. We added July 2015 (66 articles) and copy-edited 37 of those. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from June 2016. Well done! Overall, we recorded copy edits to 240 articles by 20 editors, reducing our total backlog to 13 months and 1,656 articles, the second-lowest month-end total ever.

August Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 21 through 27 August; the theme was sports-related articles in honor of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Of the eight editors who signed up, five editors removed 11 articles from the backlog. A quiet blitz – everyone must be on vacation. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdlsk.

New deal for page patrollers

Hi Becky Sayles,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:28, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hello Becky Sayles. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as mark pages as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 11:51, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Becky Sayles. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review - newsletter

Hello Becky Sayles,

Breaking the back of the backlog
We now have 810 New Page Reviewers! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog. Now it's time for action.

Mid July to 01 Oct 2016

If each reviewer does only 10 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by each reviewer doing only 2 or 3 reviews a day - that's about 5 minutes work!
Let's get that over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

Second set of eyes

Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work. Read about it at the new Monitoring the system section in the tutorial.

Getting the tools we need - 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey: Please vote

With some tweaks to their look, and some additional features, Page Curation and New Pages Feed could easily be the best tools for patrollers and reviewers. We've listed most of what what we need at the 2016 WMF Wishlist Survey. Voting starts on 28 November - please turn out to make our bid the Foundation's top priority. Please help also by improving or commenting on our Wishlist entry at the Community Wishlist Survey. Many other important user suggestions are listed at at Page Curation.

Guild of Copy Editors December 2016 News

Guild of Copy Editors December 2016 News

Hello everyone, and welcome to the December 2016 GOCE newsletter. We had an October newsletter all set to go, but it looks like we never pushed the button to deliver it, so this one contains a few months of updates. We have been busy and successful!

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: Nominations are open for election of Coordinators for the first half of 2017. Please visit the election page to nominate yourself or another editor, and then return after December 15 to vote. Thanks for participating!

September Drive: The September drive was fruitful. We set out to remove July through October 2015 from our backlog (an ambitious 269 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of oldest articles to just 83. We reduced our overall backlog by 97 articles, even with new copyedit tags being added to articles every day. We also handled 75% of the remaining Requests from August 2016. Overall, 19 editors recorded copy edits to 233 articles (over 378,000 words).

October Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 October; the theme was Requests, since the backlog was getting a bit long. Of the 16 editors who signed up, 10 editors completed 29 requests. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part.

November Drive: The November drive was a record-breaker! We set out to remove September through December 2015 from our backlog (239 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of old articles to just 66, eliminating the two oldest months! We reduced our overall backlog by 523 articles, to a new record low of 1,414 articles, even with new tags being added to articles every day, which means we removed copy-editing tags from over 800 articles. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from October 2016. Officially, 14 editors recorded copy edits to 200 articles (over 312,000 words), but over 600 articles, usually quick fixes and short articles, were not recorded on the drive page.

Housekeeping note: we do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your Watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdslk.
