Tech News: 2024-20
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word
__EXPECTWITHOUTSCANS__
to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list. [1] - If you use the user-preference "Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template (what's this?)" will now also work without reloading the page. [2]
- Kartographer maps can now specify an alternative text via the
alt=
attribute. This is identical in usage to thealt=
attribute in the image and gallery syntax. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive. [3] - The old Guided Tour for the "New Filters for Edit Review" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 May. It will be on all wikis from 16 May (calendar). [5][6]
- The Special:Search results page will now use CSS flex attributes, for better accessibility, instead of a table. If you have a gadget or script that adjusts search results, you should update your script to the new HTML structure. [7]
Future changes
- In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022. Learn more. [8]
- Two columns of the
pagelinks
database table (pl_namespace
andpl_title
) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the newlink_target
table instead (lt_namespace
andlt_title
). In your existing SQL queries:- Replace
JOIN pagelinks
withJOIN link_target
andpl_
withlt_
in theON
statement - Below that add
JOIN pagelinks ON lt_id = pl__target_id
- See phab:T222224 for technical reasoning. [9][10]

Did you choose "Queen of Hearts" because of that being your favourite playing card or character from Alice in Wonderland? --72.69.145.55 (talk) 07:42, 15 May 2024 (UTC) https://posterfoundry.com/queen-of-hearts-card-poster/
- The playing card; I had no idea of the Alice in Wonderland character until after I renamed. Cheers, Queen of Hearts (talk) 00:05, 16 May 2024 (UTC)

Communist News Network moved to draftspace
An article you recently created, Communist News Network, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. - @Dan arndt: why would you draftify a redirect? Thanks, Diverging Diamond (is Queen of Hearts's alt; talk) 07:03, 18 May 2024 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Frederick H. Bealefeld III
The article Frederick H. Bealefeld III you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Frederick H. Bealefeld III for reasons why the nomination failed. RfC Closure request
Hi... Do you mind to close RfC at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Lists#Rfc: inclusion of -elect official into List of president/vice president/prime minister. Thank you. Ckfasdf (talk) 08:18, 29 May 2024 (UTC)
- The talk page is borked somehow in the round-robin move you have made. 😂 Mind untangling it?
- There is also Ajay Kumar Singh (Bihar politician, Bharatiya Janata Party) article. I am not sure which of the two are more notable. Being in the current parliament does not make him more notable than the other person if he has nothing else to show for. I suggest moving it back unless there are additional content to differentiate the two people in other ways.
Courtesy ping to User:Sohom Datta, who has been named in the edit summary of the page move Special:Diff/1226425611 as the requestor. – robertsky (talk) 15:41, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, @Robertsky. Regarding the first point, unless I messed something up really bad, I don't think the page had a talkpage before the move, so I've just replaced the circular redir with {{WPBS}}. That said, I'm off to lunch, so I'll evaluate the rest once I get back home. Queen of Hearts (talk) 15:53, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- I did not see the Ajay Kumar Singh (Bihar politician, Bharatiya Janata Party) page before requesting the move. However, my initial evaluation of the pages was that the congress politician (due to their status as a congress district head) had significantly more coverage than their Bharatiya Janata Party counterpart. I'm open to being dissuaded about this (since I realize I might not have considered recency as a parameter in my initial search for sources). Sohom (talk) 16:06, 30 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Sohom Datta, the only thing I gather from the articles (without searching elsewhere) are that both are/were members of the Bihar Legislative Assembly and are of different parties. Nothing on being a district head or whatsoever. There is nothing else to substantiate an evaluation of which of the two are more notable. Hence in my opener,
unless there are additional content to differentiate the two people in other ways
. Mind expanding the article(s) further? Also, you might want to drop a hatnote {{for}} or {{confused}} so that people still know that there is another article in this partial dab arrangement? – robertsky (talk) 17:03, 30 May 2024 (UTC)- Okay, lol, I give up, I thought this would be a relatively simple job, but it seems like the sources are all over the place on this. <rant> If all sources are correct, I have found over 6 people named "Ajay Kumar Singh" who have in some way, shape or form contested and won seats in the Bihar Legislative Council under a variety of different parties (including in one case, having contested a election through their wife who was married days before the election). Not only that, in some cases "Ajay Kumar Singh" are arbitrarily referred to as "Ajay Singh" by a variety of publications which complicates finding sources even further.</rant>
- T.L.D.R, unless Aviram7 can provide more context/sources on this, it might just make sense to undo the move and keep both the politicians in the same hierarchy (disambiguation wise) for now. Also, I will double check and make sure my name is not secretly Ajay Kumar Singh and I haven't accidentally contested a ballot for the Bihar Legislative Council. Sohom (talk) 03:09, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

- @Sohom Datta: As I told you earlier on discord that I tried to find more information about him, but I am not able to find other information about him like his personal life, education, past life and other things because when I searched his name on Google, I found MLA of Bharatiya Janata Party from Bihar with the same name and there were others as you mentioned above, however I am trying to find information, when I checked on Wikipedia, I saw Ajay Kumar Singh (Bihar politician, Bharatiya Janata Party) and I thought of creating an article about Ajay Kumar Singh (Bihar politician, Indian National Congress) and I created it, my suggestion would be if this article is transferred to the old name without leaving it and hatnote is added to both articles, only then it will be good, however I am moving forward to create articles of other politicians of Bihar on Wikipedia. Recent changes
- The software used to render SVG files has been updated to a new version, fixing many longstanding bugs in SVG rendering. [16]
- The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It was changed last week in some skins (Vector legacy and Minerva). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in Vector-2022. The developers are still considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
- The HTML markup used for citations by Parsoid changed last week. In places where Parsoid previously added the
mw-reference-text
class, Parsoid now also adds thereference-text
class for better compatibility with the legacy parser. More details are available. [17]
Problems
- There was a bug with the Content Translation interface that caused the tools menus to appear in the wrong location. This has now been fixed. [18]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [19][20]
- The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a
<span class="mw-cite-backlink">
wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [21] - On multilingual wikis that use the
<translate>
system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [22]

Hello can you share with me why this category was deleted ? Thank you Nayyn (talk) 13:49, 24 June 2024 (UTC)

Rollback granted
Hi Queen of Hearts. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:
- Being granted rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle or Ultraviolet. It just adds a [Rollback] button next to a page's latest live revision - that's all. It does not grant you any additional "status" on Wikipedia, nor does it change how Wikipedia policies apply to you.
- Rollback should be used to revert clear and unambiguous cases of vandalism only. Never use rollback to revert good faith edits.
- Rollback should never be used to edit war, and it should never be used in a content-related dispute to restore the page to your preferred revision. If rollback is abused or used for this purpose or any other inappropriate purpose, the rights will be revoked.
- Use common sense. If you're not sure about something, ask!
If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! DanCherek (talk) 23:53, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

Why did you return deleted insulting text?
Disgracefull for wikipedia is to allow opposite political party members to arrange article text about living person, trying to insult her. Fact is that reference list and complete text, was written by member of the Tomislav Tomasevic political party "Mozemo" with only _target to spread hate, discredit living person, discredit her family and it is requred to be deleted completly, because it is written without her permission.

The article Alfred Hitchcock Presents season 6 has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Fails WP:GNG, lack any sources/references - entirely original material.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Dan arndt (talk) 05:15, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
WikiProject AI Cleanup project banner
If the banner is not meant to be used on individual articles, this should be clearly stated on the project page and the template documentation. In any case, your replacement of the template with {{WikiProject Artificial Intelligence}} was clearly incorrect in most cases, as the intent was clearly to flag articles as needing AI clean-up, and most of the topics had nothing to do with AI whatsoever. What should have been done was to place {{AI-generated}} clean-up tag on the article instead. --Paul_012 (talk) 05:43, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, @Paul 012; I was operating on the assumption that most of these were AfC submissions where ppl typed "AI" into the "add WikiProjects" prompt and got AI Cleanup instead of Artificial Intelligence and it didn't come to me that the banner could be used that way. I'll update the doc and cleanup after myself. Charlotte (Queen of Hearts • talk) 20:14, 14 September 2024 (UTC)

Administrator Elections: Call for Candidates
Administrator Elections | Call for Candidates
The administrator elections process has officially started! Interested editors are encouraged to self-nominate or arrange to be nominated by reviewing the instructions at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/October 2024/Call for candidates.
Here is the schedule:
- October 8–14 - Candidate sign-up (we are here)
- October 22–24 - Discussion phase
- October 25–31 - SecurePoll voting phase
Please note the following:
- The requirements to run are identical to RFA—a prospective candidate must be extended confirmed.
- Prospective candidates are advised to become familar with the community's expectations of adminstrators, which are much higher than the minimum requirement of having extended confirmed status. This includes reviewing successful and unsuccessful RFAs, reading the essay Wikipedia:Advice for RfA candidates, and possibly requesting an optional poll on their chances of passing.
- The process will have a one week call for candidates phase, a one week pause to set up SecurePoll, a three-day period of public discussion, followed by 7 days of no public discussion and a private vote using SecurePoll.
- The outcomes of this process are identical to making requests for adminship. There is no official difference between an administrator appointed through RFA or administrator elections.
- Administrator elections are also a valid means of regaining adminship for de-sysopped editors.
Ask any questions about the process at the talk page. A separate user talk message will be sent to official candidates with additional information about the process.
To avoid sending too many messages, this will be the last mass message sent about administrator elections. If you are interested in the process, please make sure to watchlist the appropriate pages. A watchlist notice will be added when the discussion phase opens, and again when the voting phase opens.

AFDs
Hello, Queen of Hearts,
I see you've become a new administrator and you've jumped into closing AFDs. Please read WP:NOQUORUM. If an AFD discussion has just the nominator's opinion and one argument for Deletion, our closers generally close it as a "Soft Deletion" because of the low participation. This means that the article can be restored if it is requested at WP:REFUND. However, Soft Deletion is not possible if a) there are any Keep arguments or b) if the article has been PROD'd or been nominated at AFD before. You'll see if you are using XFDcloser, which I recommend, that there is an option when selecting "Delete" to indicate it is a Soft Deletion.
Thank you and if you have any questions about working at AFD, feel free to approach me or any other of the regular discussion closers. Liz Read! Talk! 21:26, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
- Also, we generally let discussions run a full 7 days unless it is a Speedy Keep or SNOWCLOSE situation. Your closures were just a little bit early so that's permissable. But don't close discussions hours early or even days early. This can happen sometimes but is not appropriate. Liz Read! Talk! 21:28, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
- I might have been incorrect on the timing of closing AFDs. Here, where I live, we had a time change over last weekend, so the the times of starting AFDs from a week ago are off by an hour. So, I might have been mistaken there. Liz Read! Talk! 05:48, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Liz. I don't have the time to fully respond right now, but, weirdly, I have a script to show relative timestamps, and it said "six days ago" for some of them, but XfDCloser (which, yes, I am using) gave it the green so I figured it was fine, and the UTC timestamps do seem to add up. charlotte 👸♥📱 06:26, 8 November 2024 (UTC)
