Your recent edits

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button   located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 16:20, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Re: Adoption

Sure, I can adopt you. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have about any area of Wikipedia. If I don't know the answer, I probably know who would. Useight (talk) 16:32, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

How did I know you were going to ask about images? Well, taking a looking at the article, I see that it does not have any images at all. Therefore, it could probably take one copyright image under the fair use clause. However, I would ask this question at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions to find out if editors with more image-related experience agree with this assessment. Useight (talk) 18:07, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Re: Possible vandalism

Actually, if you take a look at the original version of the article, found here, there have always been "x's" there. I guess nobody has figured out yet what should be there. Useight (talk) 17:37, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Welcome to WP:CEng

Hi, Samar, welcome to WikiProject Civil Engineering!

We are a growing community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to identifying, categorizing, and improving articles related to Civil engineering. Some points that may be helpful:

  • Our main aim is to help improve Civil engineering-related articles, so if someone asks for help with an article, please try your hardest to help them if you are able.
  • Project-wide affecting discussions take place on the project's main discussion page; it is highly recommended that you watchlist it.
  • The project has several ongoing and developing activities, such as article quality assessment, of which you are welcome to take part in.
  • If you're not sure how to help, take a quick look at our To Do list for ideas.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask on the talk page, and we will be happy to help you.

And once again - Welcome!

Welcome aboard. Hope you enjoy editing and contributing to civil engineering articles. Not much is organised at the moment in WP:Ceng but the members just try to improve the civil engineering topics as a whole. Cheers - Dumelow (talk) 19:36, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

A lot of the current members are still in training, including me (3rd year student), so no need to worry about that! If you need a hand with a particular article or have any other questions please feel free to ask me, cheers - Dumelow (talk) 09:36, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Re: LUMS

Yes, I agree that the article has parts that are definitely not neutral, such as the section called "LUMS Library". Phrases such as "excellent sevices", "world-class squash courts", and "our motto" need to be taken out. Good call. Useight (talk) 15:03, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

P.S. - I can deal with the newspaper copyright question a bit later, I need to head out to a job interview. Useight (talk) 15:05, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Newspaper image

Okay, according to this site, all newspaper photographs are automatically copyrighted when taken; apparently this is called Common Law Copyright. However, most photographers employed by a newspaper have signed the rights away to their employer. This makes the image non-free, and therefore, not as preferable as a free image. But we do have this template which declares our occasional use of a non-free newspaper image to be fair use. So, in short, it seems a newspaper image can be used, but sparingly. Correcting spelling errors

Blogs

You are correct, blogs are almost never acceptable sources. See Wikipedia:Verifiability#Self-published_sources and WP:RS. Useight (talk) 14:51, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

DYK

Looking through the archives, it appears that May 17th of this year would be included in Wikipedia:Recent additions 211. I also found at Talk:Whitney Ellsworth, that the Whitney Ellsworth article was in the DYK section that day, too. If there is anyone who can find exactly what was in the DYK that day, it'd be User:RyanCross, so for more info, I'd recommend asking him on this one. Useight (talk) 14:59, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

RE: Biology article

That article does needs some work. I can help with some cleanup, but I have never taken a biology class, so I can't help with the content. I also cannot think of any editors who are biology experts off the top of my head, sorry. I'll do what I can to clean the article up a bit, though. Useight (talk) 15:09, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

RE: National University of Modern Languages

I too thought that sentence was unnecessary, so I removed it. Useight (talk) 15:09, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Welcome to WikiProject Universities! :D

Re: City infobox

To make a city infobox, you'd want to follow the template at Template:Infobox Settlement. There is basically a set list of items that can be included if desired in the infobox. The full list can be seen at that template page, but they include "name", "motto", "nickname", "zip code", "population", etc. I'll do a sample one here so you can see the basic formatting.

Re: National University of Sciences and Technology Assessment

Perhaps a citation after "getting chartered in 1993" in the lead paragraph. I'd put a comma after "Karachi" in the last sentence of the lead paragraph and a comma after "sciences" in the last sentence of the second paragraph. Under the heading "Academic divisions", the first sentence says, "its over 60 years old", which should be reworded. Under the sub-heading "Army Medical College (AMC):" it says, "(11 ft X 11 ft)"; I'd make that say "(11 ft. by 11 ft.)". In the same section it says "for Post Graduates students and for undergraduate students". I'd change that to "for Post-Graduate and undergraduate students". That same section has the word "cafeteria" capitalized when it shouldn't be, and I'd put a comma after "squash court" in that same sentence. That's what I've got from the first half. The rest will follow. Useight (talk) 08:41, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: Merge Articles

Are you sure they're the same river? If so, they should definitely be merged and the correct name should be used. The articles could also benefit from some cleanup. Useight (talk) 01:23, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi - Image:Pakistan rivers map.jpg is a very useful map but unfortunately the page you sourced it from has a copyright tag that is not compatible with GFDL. Wikipedia cannot reproduce maps that are under copyright restrictions.--Matilda talk 09:34, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Image permission problem with Image:Pakistan rivers map.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Pakistan rivers map.jpg. I noticed that that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the image (or other media file) agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the image to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the image has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the image's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Images lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:27, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Thank you; I have deleted it. I know that our copyright policies can be confusing. If you ever have questions about whether or not an image is usable, we do have a board where you can ask: WP:MCQ. I can help with text copyright questions, but images are not my major focus. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:19, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
That one is okay. :) NationMaster is a "Wikipedia mirror", a site known to copy Wikipedia articles. If you look at the bottom of that page, you'll see that it says, "The Wikipedia article included on this page is licensed under the GFDL." It's okay for other sites to duplicate us, as long as they give us credit. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:42, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi you asked but the site from which it is taken, it states '©1997-2004 Wildlife of Pakistan-All Rights Reserved'. Doesn't that mean the copyright is expired? It doesn't mean copyright ahs expired - it is the date at which the copyright was established. Copyright can then last for many years after depending on the laws of the country - some countries have 50, others have 70 years. Regards --Matilda talk 19:52, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Wallpaper, images

Hi. I'm afraid I have no idea. As I mentioned, I do a lot more with text than images. The place to ask is probably WP:MCQ. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 14:55, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

No reason to be sorry. Nothing wrong with asking. :) You never know who has what bit of information on Wikipedia. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:07, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
As far as I know, you can upload wallpapers, as long as they are not copyrighted or meet the fair use policy. But I don't know when you'd need to use a wallpaper. If you have an image and you don't know its copyright status, it's usually better to err on the side of caution and not upload it. If you have an image from a blog that specifically doesn't have a copyright, then it can be used. And, yes, we can use old copyrighted images under the fair use policy if no free equivalent can be found. Useight (talk) 16:37, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Re: WP:CSD - Page written in Russian

This recently tagged page written in Russian has a "translation needed" tag, as well as a CSD tag (the latter by you). I have translated it (see the Talk Page) - basically its just brief bio about a model (no citations or links etc). I don't know what to do with the tags etc so I've not touched them. Sorry but I don't know how to link it here either.Anyway, hope this helps! Plutonium27 (talk) 18:32, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Yup,that's the one. Could be a test, could be a vanity - I'm not a admin and I'm sure glad it isn't up to me to sort these things out: ) Thanks. Plutonium27 (talk) 18:45, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Degree programs at NUST

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Degree programs at NUST, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Wikipedia is not a prospectus replacement.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Eight Thousanders

The Eight thousanders in the Karakoram are not simply in Pakistan. Contrary to Pakistani POV pushers claim, they are on the border with China, and are claimed by India - an issue on which the international community is neutral. The column is headed "Location", so Karakoram is accurate and neutral. Viewfinder (talk) 09:40, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Parts of Concordia are located in disputed territory; however, the four mountains from the range listed in eight thousanders are located in the undisputed territory inside Pakistan. K2, K3, K4, and K5 are all located on the Pakistani side of the border. I'll try to find some reliable sources for it. You seem to be fairly knowledgeable in this field, so I guess Karakoram is fair enough. Cheers. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 15:17, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

P.S: I have found certain books and maps officially published by the Pakistani government stating it to be undisputed territory; I, however, have also found certain Indian claims stating the region comes under their territory. So we come to a point where official words of governments are no longer reliable. Hence, Karakoram is neutral. I will also suggest the range name for other peaks rather than country names for uniformity in the article, and probably a separate column for country (or alleged country). Cheers. Marsa Lahminal (talk) 15:54, 4 April 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, but the Karakoram 8000ers are on the border, not within Pakistan, despite the claims of many Pakistanis, possibly including Pakistani authors of official documents. Go to Talk:K2#Border_location and see in particular the link to the border agreement. Viewfinder (talk) 03:28, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
P.S:You rightly point out that despite official Pakistani documents claiming the 8000ers to be undisputed territory, India claims the region. Therefore the the territory is disputed. Viewfinder (talk) 03:39, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Islam by country

Hello there. I disagree with your edits during December 2008 in Islam by Country where you removed the 'details' hyperlink. Like the Catholicism by country article, the details hyperlink means that readers may understand better that the link is about Islam in whatever country rather than simply the article about that country. I was thinking of changing it but I think I need your opinion first.Opticals (talk) 02:48, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Dear Opticals, actually if you see the Roman Catholicism by country article, the country name leads to the article of country and the details lead to the article of Catholicism in that country. If you see Islam by country article, the country name leads directly to the article of Islam in that country. I was working on the article to make it a FL, however could not continue working on it. I still believe this is a better way to represent and Catholicism article should also be changed to this pattern. However, if you think it should be the other way then do take help of some senior editors about what would be better to make it Featured List. Cheers. Regarding Old Warning

In regards to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:68.157.53.193&redirect=no

You have to understand that IPs can change hands, and some users(like myself) can end up coming to this website and wind up confused as to why we suddenly have such an odd message as that. I feel it should be prudent to be careful who you send warnings to, so that you don't end up inadvertently confusing others in the future. Best of luck. 68.157.53.193 (talk) 04:37, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

August 2009

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, adding content without citing a reliable source, as you did to Karambar Lake, is not consistent with our policy of verifiability. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you are familiar with Wikipedia:Citing sources, please take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. Eeekster (talk) 23:54, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Actually, if I can have just 1 more minute, I will add the references, as I have added to the article. You really need to relax a bit. Cheers ~ Marsa Lahminal (talk) 23:58, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
The notice was intended to get you to add them. It appears to be working. Eeekster (talk) 00:00, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
I added them before any notice and got an edit conflict :). Thankyou for your warning anyways. Regards Marsa Lahminal (talk) 00:03, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
