Surely the village pump should be merged with w:Requests for comment? They seem to completely overlap. Same goes for all the subpages, ie. w:Village pump (policy) and w:Requests for comment/Policies. Watch list legend

I see discussion has begun on this, but I do not know the correct forum. The new underline with the in addition to the bolding for the m minor edit is especially ugly. "Persistent" vs. "perennial"

Is there supposed to be some kind of discernible difference between "persistent proposals" and "perennial proposals"? Why on earth are their two links to two different pages about the same concept? — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 22:17, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

I think the page Persistent proposals is for the proposals that have showed consensus while Perennial proposals is for proposals that have been rejected several times. Maybe the titles should reflect that better.--Ryk V (talk) 22:24, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

Little slideshow

Earlier this month, in a discussion at the India talk page, I came up with an idea to better the concept of rotational-images. The problem at hand was too many (good & informative) pictures but just two image places. The current solution is just a rotational image box that changes the displayed image hourly or daily.

But i still feel that a country as diverse as India (having more than fourteen distinct architectural styles) cannot be justly portrayed by a couple of Images, as no architectural style is greater than another and neither can one portray the other.

I suggested at the India-talk page that a little slide show be put up. The slideshow would look exactly like an image box but it would progressively change the displayed image (and obviously the subtext as well) every 5 to 7 seconds. This box may have an extra 3 buttons '<' ,'||' & '>' (previous , pause and next respectively), just in case the user would wish to manually browse and see the slide show. The pause when pressed would changi to a play button, just like the one under a Wiki Sound box.

Wikipedia has perhaps outgrown all the book encyclopedias, thanks to its wiki software. We have to maintain a balance.. by using simple software coding to enhance the Wikipedia, without making it look tacky or snazzy. I see the little slide show a useful contribution to the usability and flexibility to the Wikipedia.

The little slide show is just an idea, i want to promote it so that it becomes a part of Wikipedia.

Proposal: Create an "ANI" for IP's and non-comfirmed editors to use

As you all probably know, the ANI is on an indef semi-protection. Well I hope that it's kept that way. You see, I am proposeing that we creat an ANI for IP and other newbies to use, while the other ANI is to be semi-protected forever. If an IP or other editor who cannot edit the real ANI, they can post their comment at the IP "ANI" and ask that it be moved over to the real one. This page will not just be used for requests to make a comment over at the other ANI however, this page can also act like the real ANI page in the fact that if an IP or other new editor wishes to start a topic on an editor or a situation, they can do so. formalize a Pump workspace?

Would it be possible to formalize a Pump workspace - maybe wp:Village pump/workspace, or wp:Village pump/ws. editors at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical) often need to make technical examples to describe templates, parser functions, CSS, tables, and etc, and it would be nice to have some common place to put the examples (rather than having them spread out through userspace).

formalizing it would just mean adding a line on the Pump headers that says something like "Workspace for Willage Pump example code is available at wp:Village pump/ws", and then creating a page at that location with a blurb telling people to create subpages for examples.

I concur with the second statement. The first heading in Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)/Persistent proposals is Perennial proposals in discussion... Also "Persistant" seems to suggest "coming up time and time again and being very annoying" while perennial seems to suggest, simply, "frequently discussed". According to the protection log, people who didn't know better were accidentally posting there, rather than to the actual VP pages; that's why it was protected. Makes sense to me. Sorry, I cannot find a better place to put this, but when I quickly search with the new design, it sometimes deletes some of the letters in my search. If I am searching for "Washington", I will type the word then hit "Enter". Removal of material from village pump

Hi. I was looking for a post I made here several days ago and realised that it was removed, along with others, by User:Rd232. Since Rd232 is currently on a break and has blocked themselves for six weeks, could anyone else explain why the content might have been removed? Example "Who was the first pope?"

I recommend to change the example "Who was the first pope?" to a neutral one. Many people are irritated by the dominance of religion 200 years after the age of enlightenment. Other people have another religion and may be irritated by a catholic world view. I don't know if it is a neutrality issue, but maybe systemic bias. Section edit links on VPA

As WP:Village pump (all) is protected, the individual sections in the page don't have edit links (which would go to the appropriate subpage were they not disabled by the protection). I wish we could keep those links, as it's a bit of a pain to have to scroll back up to find which subpage the discussion is in, then open the subpage in a new tab, and then find the discussion again to reply.

It would work to use the Titleblacklist with "noedit" instead of normal protection (as that doesn't prevent edit links), with <h1>...</h1> headers on VPA rather than = ... = to avoid useless edit links for those headers (like this like this). But I notice that all other examples of pages protected using the title blacklist are done to blanket-protect an entire subtree, which AFAIK cannot be done with normal protection, so that may not be acceptable. Modifying the way that the Village Pump is run

Hello all, I've never proposed anything on the VP before, but there is a first time for everything. The Village Dump is rather hard to navigate through, even with the table of contents, so I think that it might be beneficial to move to some sort of system like the one that they use on Wikia. This allows each topic to be on it's own page, so instead of having a page with a large number of topics separated with header 2s, there would be an auto-updating list of the open topics with links to them, the last time that they were edited, and (if we wish), the username of the last editor. Anyways, please comment, or ask questions if you have any. Ajraddatz (Talk) 03:06, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

The drawback there is that one then cannot follow all the discussions by loading up the history page and clicking the "cur" diff link on the last revision read. It may also raise the bar for new contributors, as they would have to figure out how to correctly create a new subpage. As an (I would think) vastly simpler, more general (in the sense that it would be useful for a wider range of purposes), and less structurally intrusive measure than LiquidThreads, if we just each had the ability to tell our watchlist

"add this page and all its subpages (i.e., any page whose name starts with the name of this one plus a slash), and in the future add any new subpages when they are created" —this is the ideal version, which allows later removing particular subpages, although it would be moderately useful even without that—

that would seem to eliminate the drawback to separate pages per topic, and be useful on this and all sister projects for tracking all subpages of a forum, or all requests of a particular ilk, and probably for other things that would be thought of. We can have a createbox that allows a user to simply type in the title (which they need to do already), and hit "create". From there, it can automatically preload any required "stuff". Just as easy as the current system. Beyond that, each of the individual threads can be automatically added to a category; if a user watches the category, then all of the pages in that category should also be on their watchlist. There needs to be a way, I think, of doing just what watching a category now does: watching the content of the category page, not the contents of pages in the category. Interlangs confusion

Interlangs b/w other lang VP seem in confusion. Template:Villagepump is linked to/from them and it's okay. But on this page people cannot go to many of them. It's quite misleading specially for newcomers whom we often suggest to ask this page first for their own language equivalent, I'm afraid.

Can anyone arrange to fix this situation? I guess a matrix for interlang bot should be fixed, but I don't know where it is.

References not lighting up?

I am not sure this is the right place to post this, but whenever I used to click a reference, it would redirect and the reference I chose would be highlighted. Now it just redirect to it and I am lost to which reference I am supposed to be looking at. What happened? Secure server

I've been logging onto Wikipedia through the secure server feature, which I believe has a few problems. Although it says "remember me for 30 days" or something like that, I was logged out a few times after only 3 three minutes. This frustrates me because while saving a page, I would be logged out, so the IP number is displayed instead on "Sp33dyphil" on the article's talk page. What's going on here with the "Remember me for 30 days" thing? Also, after using this feature, I found out that, if I log in without the secure server, the computer seems to reject me and log me out again. This means that I will have to be using the secure server whenever I want to edit the site. Can somebody please explain what's going on? Signing icon

The Wikipedia "Missing Manual", page 144, says there is an icon with cursive writing at the top of discussion pages which affixes ones signature when clicked. No such icon exists on discussion pages which I access. Has this icon been eliminated, or another mechanism substituted? At any rate, is there a way to sign without typing the tildes? Wikipedia violates guidelines

On page entitled 'Santa Claus' Well isn't then wikipedia going against it's own code, because while it may be truth that Santa is not real, no one can ever or has ever proved it, therefore it can not be cited, and cannot be classified as fact. So wikipedia, should not be allowed to say for sure whether he is real or not, because it hasn't been proved. (Using words such as mythological) Therefore the article is NOT written in a neutral point of view and violates wikipedia's guidelines!!! - Just to make a point, Santa is not real, and it can be proved, by the principle of falsifiability. Just like invisible little pink elephants floating around are not falsifiable they don't exist, therefore Santa, also, doesn't exist. Very easy. Problem with the access to Commons

Dear All,

What have you changed to the access to Commons? I cannot access Commons this morning via Internet Explorer, well the other sites of wikipedia.

As when you had changed the access to the pictures, I can fortunately use the not user-friendly Firefox as a "rescue wheel" to access Commons.

Style formatting disappearing on random pages, plain text only

Hi everyone,

Lately, when I click on random articles the Wikipedia style formatting (CSS?) is disappearing altogether and just a plain text of the article appears with the left side links way at the bottom without the formatting. I'm finding this really annoying. Refreshing the page does nothing. I dunno if it's my connection or what, every other site seems fine. Is this happening with anyone else? Is there some kind of fix. New Pages by New Users

Has anyone ever seen data for the number of new pages that are created by new editors? I guess "new editor" would have to be defined but could be easily defined as unconfirmed users. I patrol new pages and see that ~70% of new pages qualify for speedy deletion and 95%+ of those are created by new users. I only bring it up because if the data supports my suspicion, it seems obvious that attempting to improve the new article creation process in some way would not only help create better new articles, it might help us retain new editors who may feel bitten by having their work "deleted as quickly as possible" (possibly a new user's interpretation of speedy deletion tags). WikiPedia Potential Widespread Violation of CC Licences & Copyright?

I've discovered web use of images downloaded from Wiki which are not attributed and therefore in contravention of the specific CC use requiring attribution. The copyright information in metadata attributed to downloaded images is almost always wrong as it is derived usually from the programme used to process the image. Sometimes this states "copyright" without noting such requirements, but this isn't as serious as where metadata wrongly states the image is in the public domain or wrongly states that copyright status is unknown as this facilitates misuse of images once downloaded and their onward misuse. Additionally (according to legal view obtained as a photographer) this may mean that Wiki is in breach of national and inter-national laws on copyright as the medium from which such files are sourced. Is there a process by which Wiki can attach or better still embed appropriate copyright requirements into metadata? WyrdLight (talk) 14:12, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia only cares about itself, not how material is reused by others. We carefully patrol our own content to ensure that images (and text) are either original contributions or well-marked as being the property of others. This is done as a volunteer project working as a whole. If others choose to misuse that content, such as falsely claiming public-domain status or not attributing a CC-BY or GFDL work, then it is up to the owner of the content, i.e. the person who uploaded their own image, to pursue individual remedies. The Foundation itself stays clear of that area, to be sure it doesn't become a "publisher".

If you are proposing that images hosted here be systematically marked up with appropriate license metadata, that is an interesting idea and could even possibly be done by an automated process, but you would need to work out all the technical details before proposing it. And since Commons is where most "freely" licensed media should reside, that is likely the project where you should be discussing this. Images hosted here tend to be "non-free" and used under fair-use rationales. Their owners usually have much more restrictive licensing terms - but again, we are quite diligent in marking those images as non-free, it is up to their respective owners to pursue remedies for misuse. Display errors on MANY Wikipedia pages using Google Chrome.

Using Google Chrome version 14.0.835.202 m for Windows XP-SP3, in quite a few articles that have embedded images, sometime an image displays ... how to put this .... about one text line "too high". As a result, the top of the image is superimposed over the text line immediately above it. This is totally reproducible, but fortunately quite infrequent, and so far I have only seen it affect one image on any affected page. To give an example, in the Ansett_Australia article, the "1970s logo" image is affected. The problem does not happen for pages displayed in Firefox or IE7. The only other thing I can see that affected images have in common is that they are all displayed on the left side of the screen. I can put in a screen capture if it would help. wiki followed

I feel that I am being hassled and annoyed by another editor, he nominated a ton of articles in what I described as "bad faith" and although nearly all of them were kept, when I complained about it, my calling it "bad faith" was considered a personal attack and I was blocked. When I read to WP:HARASS essay I felt that as it was defined this other editors actions fit the bill. I ask what then should I do if this editor is still annoying me. After the articles were deleted he followed me to another article and covered it with excessive tags and then nominated it for deletion, he messages me and starts a new thread about every pedantic detail and also makes false statements such as that certain articles should be deleted because the sources are not available to him due to a paywall or "warning" me and ordering me to stop "canvassing" any time I send out a neutral message about a rescue effort or a deletion nomination. What should I do to remedy the situation. He seems to have a pattern of what appears to me of becoming "obsessed" or "compulsive" when he wants to delete an article and has seriously annoyed at least one other editor I know of. This to me in my own personal opinion appears to be borderline "disruptive" but I was warned that I cannot describe him as such in an authoritative statement otherwise I will be blocked. I find it also unfair I was blocked without any warning and that my unblock request was not serious considered. In any case I want to avoid this user. Would my best bet be to delete this account and start fresh with a new one that he does not know of? First make sure you understand what is laid out in our WP:Dispute resolution policy. Then probably the first place you will want to go is the WP:Dispute resolution noticeboard. You will want to organize the dispute as you see it with links to discussions and diffs, so that editors can address specific actions and behaviors, and not just vague "He has been bothering me" accusations (I know you didn't give any of these details here because you are just asking for direction on where to take this). This may be a really naive question as I might have just missed a huge discussion or something, but why is the top of the page different. It now says simply sandbox, preferences, watchlist, contributions and puts "talk" in parentheses next to the username. I really don't like it. Is there a way to send it back to the old way? Lowering the archive time

Some of the village pumps (primarily Proposals, Technical, and to a lesser extent Policy) are getting extremely long. Over 300 kB, in fact. Perhaps we should lower the archive time to five days (it's currently at seven days) on VPT, VPR, VPP, or all of the village pumps. Thoughts? David1217 ^{What I've done} 20:38, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

Due to what these pages are used for, proposals and policy should never drop below 7 days for archiving.

Regardless of participation level, RfCs are to be open 30 days. And other such discussions at least 7. And since the proposal and the policy pages are the most likely to have such discussions...

Broken VP transclusion caused by onlyinclude overriding nowiki

A quirk of wikitext syntax means that the <onlyinclude>...</onlyinclude> tag takes precedence over the <nowiki>...</nowiki> tag if a page containing both is transcluded (Bugzilla:9584). This is unintuitive, as editors are used to nowiki having precedence over all other tags. In addition, the unexpected precedence does not have an effect unless a page is actually transcluded.

Consequently, if a technical post on one of the Village Pump pages attempts to nowikify an example of an onlyinclude tag, it will appear to work on that particular page, but will cause the entire page to disappear from the combined transclusion at Wikipedia:Village pump (all).

Having seen this happen and be fixed before, I knew what to do when I saw it happen again just now at VPT. But to anyone unfamiliar with the error, the disappearance is baffling. If there were a way to note this quirk at the top of Wikipedia:Village pump (all), that might help puzzled editors work out how to correct this very unusual error if/when it recurs.

Hi there. I don't really know if I'm in the right place to ask that ... And I hope my english is not too bad to be understood. Is some one here can help me for translation ?
I'm on french Wiki and was looking here for a detailed list of car glass. I have some vintage collection cars at home and need to fix/replace some rubber seals on them and I found an english-written list without image of what I need but I don't find a correct translation for all technical terms. On the car glass page there's no list of all the windows of a car ...

Large, politically partisan anti-Obama ad in the middle of an article's body text

Is the community really serious about this? Did any of you actually look at this ad? You not actually plastered a gigantic ad in the middle of an article's text, but a clearly partisan ad on a site that professes neutrality as one of its core principles? C'mon, this has got to be a hacker's hoax, right? I really wouldn't care that much about small banner ads at the top or on the side of the site, but this? This has got to be someone's practical joke. Searching the Village pump

The search tools here are worthless. If I click on the search link under a section header, I get a Google search results page that lists every archive for that section. Not helpful, unless you know to modify the Google search box on the page that's produced to include what you're looking for. Couldn't this happen on the front end before searching Google? If I enter text into the  Search all village pump sections & archives  box, I get an error message: An error has occurred while searching: The search backend returned an error:, although no error is listed. I can bypass this if I enclose the search term in quotation marks; perhaps the button could add them to whatever's entered in the box?
