BLACKCOCK, or HEATHCOCK, a large European grouse (Tetrao tetrix), so called because of the glossy black color of the cock; also known as blackgrouse. The female is grayish, mottled in darker colors, and is called “grayhen,” or “heathhen”; the young are called “poults.” See Capercaillie.
