Nurmijärvi is a rural municipality with a long history, when the earliest documentary mention of Nurmijärvi dates back to 1488. An administrative municipality was officially founded in 1775, and it formerly included the town of Hyvinkää. A former lake next to the church village that gave the municipality its name, was partially drained in the 1920s and completely drained in the 1950s for farmland. Nurmijärvi was once home of the first pharmaceutical factory of Finland, founded in 1899 by pharmacist Albin Koponen (1858–1917), the main products of which were filizine extracted from male fern root rhizomes, sold as fish tapeworm, and Cestoda medicines called Filisin and Filicon.

The population of the municipality is some 45,000 inhabitants (2021), and in recent decades, Nurmijärvi has been one of the fastest growing municipalities of Finland. Nurmijärvi has become popular with families moving out from Helsinki to single-family homes in the urban areas and countryside.

The administrative centre is the urban area of Nurmijärvi, but the largest urban area is the southern town of Klaukkala (Swedish: Klövskog) near the border to Vantaa and Espoo, with about 20,000 inhabitants, continuous with the Helsinki urban area. Rajamäki is the municipality's third largest and northernmost significant settlement, near the border to Hyvinkää. The fourth largest settlement, Röykkä, is near the Vihti border in the northwestern part of the municipality.
