Etymology

edit

From an earlier занят (zanjat) (19 cent.), borrowed from Ottoman Turkish صنعت (sanat, zanat). Cognate with Turkish sanat.

The modern form is reanalyzed as if from Old Church Slavonic за(н)ѩти (za(n)jęti, to occupy, to take part in) (cf. Bulgarian занятие (zanjatie, occupation), занимание (zanimanie, exercise, occupation)).
