Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠰᠥᠨᠢ (söni, night), from Middle Mongol ᠰᠥᠨᠢ (swyṅy /⁠söni⁠/, night), from Proto-Mongolic *söni, with irregular palatalization shared with Chahar, compare Dongxiang xieni, Daur suny, Buryat һүни (hüni), Kalmyk сө (), and Khitan 𘰷𘭌 (*s uni).
