Inherited from Proto-Southwestern Tai *bɯːnꟲ⁴ (ground, earth) (Jonsson, 1991), from Middle Chinese (MC pwonX, “origin, foundation”). Cognate with Lao ພື້ນ (phư̄n), Northern Thai ᨻᩨ᩠᩶ᨶ, ᦗᦹᧃᧉ (puen²), Shan ပိုၼ်ႉ (pṵ̂en), Phake ပိုꩫ် (pün), Ahom 𑜆𑜢𑜤𑜃𑜫 (pün). Cognate via Chinese: Zhuang bonj. Doublet of ปึ๊ง (bpʉ́ng) via Teochew.
