lieutenant general (plural lieutenant generals or lieutenants general)

1. A commissioned officer in the British Army or Royal Marines or the United States Army, United States Marine Corps, or United States Air Force, ranked above a major general and below a general.
2. A similar rank in the armed forces of some other countries.

Usage notes

Like other terms (president, general, bishop), this term is capitalized when used as a title: "Lieutenant General John Doe will be arriving shortly."
