Noun

edit

great-granddaughter (plural great-granddaughters)

  1. The daughter of someone's grandchild.
    • 1999 February 14, Liesl Schillinger, “The Lost Art of the Love Affair”, in The New York Times[1]:
Her unluckier daughter and great-granddaughter have been tarred by amour's sloppy brush; but Mrs. Keppel, as her biographer Diana Souhami has written, "turned adultery into an art."

Usage notes

edit

Additional instances of "great-" can be prepended to the term, each indicating one further generation of descent. For large numbers of generations a number can be substituted, for example, "fourth great-granddaughter", "four-greats granddaughter" or "four-times-great-granddaughter".
