editInherited from Ottoman Turkish معذرت (maʾẕeret, “a having an excuse, a valid excuse, an excuse, apology”),[1][2] from Arabic مَعْذِرَة (maʕḏira, “excuse, forgiveness, pardon”), verbal noun of عَذَرَ (ʕaḏara, “to excuse”).[3]
