Alkibiades

Alkibiades (kreeka keeles Ἀλκιβιάδης; u 450 – 404 eKr) oli Ateena riigimees, oraator ja väejuht. Ta oli viimane Alkmaioniidide suguvõsa suurkuju, kuna perekond kadus pärast Peloponnesose sõda pildilt. Alkibiades mängis Peloponnesose sõja teises pooles strateegi, väejuhi ja poliitikuna tähtsat rolli.

Alkibiades vahetas sõja jooksul korduvalt poolt. Ateenas pooldas ta 410ndatel aastatel eKr agressiivset välispoliitikat ning toetas häälekalt Sitsiilia ekspeditsiooni. Kui Alkibiadese poliitilised oponendid hakkasid teda pühaduseteotuses süüdistama, põgenes ta Spartasse, kus asus ametisse strateegina ning hakkas läbi viima rünnakuid Ateena vastu. Varsti tekkisid tal vaenlased ka Spartas ning ta põgenes edasi Pärsiasse. Pärsias töötas ta satraap Tissafernese nõunikuna kuni ateenlased ta enda juurde tagasi kutsusid. Ateenas oli ta mitu aastat väejuht, kuid tema poliitilistel vaenlastel õnnestus ta uuesti eksiili saata.

Ajaloolased on teoretiseerinud, et kui Sitsiilia kampaaniat oleks Nikiase asemel juhtinud Alkibiades, ei oleks see läbi kukkunud. Sparta heaks töötades oli Alkibiades Ateena vastu efektiivne, tema juhtimisel või soovitusel võeti Dekeleia ning korraldati mitme Ateena liitlase juures mässe. Ateenasse naasnult oli ta Sparta vastu efektiivne, tema võitude tõttu oli Sparta sunnitud vaherahu sõlmima. Tema taktika oli ebatraditsiooniline, ta vallutas linnu tihti mitte piirates, vaid sabotaaži või läbirääkimistega. Alkibiadese sõjalised ja poliitilised anded osutusid tema leivaisadele väärtuslikuks, kuid tema kalduvus leida mõjukaid vaenlasi tõi kaasa selle, et ta ei püsinud kunagi kaua ühes kohas. Sõja lõpuks olid tema paremad päevad juba unustusse vajunud.
