The Imperial Shadow, also known as the Fallen Emperor, is an enemy from Final Fantasy II. It is an undead specter of the Emperor, and a quite powerful enemy. However, it is not the real Emperor who came back to life, but merely a shadow. It has a nearly boss-level HP, high Attack power, and the Curse 8 move, which can hinder the player's Attack power greatly. In Palamecia, an Imperial Shadow guards the treasure chest containing the Thunder Spear in the lower left area of the third floor.

Etymology

Imperial is that which relates to an Empire, an Emperor, or imperialism as a whole.

The term "emperor" is of Old French origin and was derived from "Imperator", which was the title of the Roman head of state during the Roman Empire, as well as sometimes used by magistrates and military commanders in the preceding Roman Republic, and itself roughly means "commander".

An emperor is a (male) monarch, usually the sovereign ruler of an empire or another type of imperial realm. Empress, the female equivalent, may indicate an emperor's wife (empress consort), mother (empress dowager), or a woman who rules in her own right (empress regnant). Emperors are generally recognized to be of a higher honor and rank than kings, and are generally the highest temporal political rank/honor in existence.

An empire is a dominion composed of a multitude of nations that's ruled by one sovereign leader, generally an emperor, although some empires were ruled by kings.

A shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. It occupies all of the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it.

In literature and poetry, a shade can be taken to mean the spirit or ghost of a dead person, residing in the underworld.
