The Minotaur (ミノタウロス, Minotaurosu?, lit. Minotauros or タウルス, Taurusu?), also known as the Taurus, Bull, or Minitaurus, is a recurring creature in the Final Fantasy series, first appearing in the original Final Fantasy. It is a creature with a variety of appearances, but it usually possesses the head of a bull and the muscular body of a man, sometimes possessing a tail as well. Though their appearances have varied from intelligent humanoids to monstrous beasts, they are usually regarded as formidable foes, sometimes appearing only as bosses.
The Minotaur is often paired with Sekhret to form the Brothers, a recurring pair of bosses or summoned monsters.
Appearances
Final Fantasy
The Minotaur appears as an enemy encountered in the Cavern of Earth and Mount Gulg, possessing powerful physical attacks.
Final Fantasy III
The Minotaur appears as an enemy encountered near the Crystal Tower. Travel near the Tower should be avoided in the early goings of the surface world owing to its strength.
Final Fantasy V
The Minotaur, also known as the Minitaurus, appears a boss encountered in the Fork Tower. The Tower is so named for its twin spires, with each negating either physical attacks or magic. Minotaur is fought at the top of the magic-negating tower, and is appropriately a physical powerhouse. He is the brother of Sekhmet.
Final Fantasy VIII
Minotaur appears as one half the Brothers, along with his brother Sacred. They are encountered in the Tomb of the Unknown King. When the party defeats the lone Sacred, he flees deeper into the dungeon, joining with Minotaur. Defeating both Brothers sees them join the party as a earth-elemental Guardian Force.
While the eldest and strongest of the Brothers, Minotaur is much smaller than his brother. This may be a play on the earlier mistranslations of Minotaur as "Minitaurus" in Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy Anthology.
Final Fantasy XI
The Taurus appears as a family of demons, known for its Mortal Ray, which inflicts Doom and be learned by Blue Mages. The common Taurus and a notorious monster called the Minotaur appear in the Phomiuna Aqueducts. The latter must be defeated for the Chains of Promathia mission "Distant Beliefs."
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
The Minotaur appears as a melee rank II Yarhi. The red Minotaurs are ally Yarhi, while the blue ones are enemy Yarhi.
Final Fantasy XIV
Both the Minotaur and the Taurus appear as distinct families of creatures. The Minotaur is a family of chimerical creations of the Allagans, and can be found within other Allagan installations as well as regular enemies in the Lochs, with the common Minotaur being encountered as a boss in The Fractal Continuum.
The Taurus appear as a family of voidsent based on their Final Fantasy XI appearance, with stronger members being capable of using the Doom-inflicting Mortal Ray. The common Taurus is encountered as an enemy in the Coerthas Central Highlands.
Final Fantasy XVI
The Minotaur appears as a race of giant bull-like beastmen known to roam the plains of Rosaria, with the common Minotaur being encountered as a mini-boss in the Kingsfall. Despite the obvious danger they pose, hunters still seek them out for their lustrous and valuable manes.
While the Minotaur's Japanese name is Taurus, in line with the demonic Taurus from Final Fantasy XI and XIV, it more closely resembles the classical minotaurs encountered elsewhere in the series.
Final Fantasy Tactics
The Minotaur appears as a race of enemies consisting of the Wisenkin, the Minotaur, and the Sekhret. They can be dangerous enemies to face, due to their high HP and attack power, but they can also be powerful allies if recruited into Ramza's party.
Vagrant Story
The Minotaur appears as a boss encountered in the Wine Cellar, and later in the time trials of the Keep. It is a straightforward foe, being one of the first bosses encountered.
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
The Minotaur appears as a boss encountered in the Level Forest. It is responsible for the poisoning of the forest, where is hides disguised as a tree. When Kaeli attempts to cut the tree down, the Minotaur sheds its disguise and poisons her. While she and Benjamin are able to defeat it, the poison renders her bedridden, forcing Benjamin to carry on alone.
Final Fantasy Adventure
The Minotaur appears as an enemy encountered inside Glaive Castle, Mt. Rocks, and the Temple of Mana. It has a chance of inflicting Pois per hit, and can drop Cure.
