Petrify materia is a Magic Materia in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth that provides the user Petrify-inflicting spells. The spells each deal strong non-elemental damage and have a chance of inflicting the petrify status. Petrify materia can also be linked with Warding Materia to resist against petrify.
In addition to petrify materia, the Poison and Petrify Materia contains the properties of both petrify and Poison Materia, although it is rarer and levels up slower than the petrify materia does.
Though the petrify materia did not exist in the original Final Fantasy VII, the Earth Materia did, which had similar spells that did not inflict a petrify status.
Obtained
Two petrify materia are obtained, both from Chadley for collecting World Intel in the Gongaga Region. The first petrify materia costs 40 Data Points, while the second will cost 60.

Use
Petrify materia grants three tiers of petrification spells, each dealing non-elemental damage and inflicting the petrify status. The basic Quake spell is unlocked from the start, while Quakera is unlocked at 300 AP, and Quaga at 900 AP.
The Quake spells deal strong non-elemental damage on their own, but the petrify status can effectively kill an enemy early. After the status is inflicted, dealing enough damage to an enemy while the status is active will turn them to stone, eliminating them from battle. Coupled together, this makes the spells stronger, but costlier to cast than the element-based spells and Poison Materia. Petrify materia's spells are weaker than Comet Materia, but have a much shorter cast time.
One of the best uses of the petrify materia is pairing it with the warding materia. This provides a resistance to the status effect, which is crucial given the status's potential to take a party member out of battle completely. Though the status can also be resisted with some accessories and the Resist spell, when facing enemies that inflict petrify, it is vital to protect against it, meaning the materia setup can be very important.
The petrify materia has a some other possible Support Materia pairings. The Auto-Cast Materia and Synergy Materia allow Quake to be cast often, potentially overwhelming enemies with damage. Magnify Materia and Magic Focus Materia can be used to increase the spellcasting damage output, and Level Boost Materia can be used if players want access to the stronger spells. Magic Efficiency Materia can alleviate the spell's relatively high materia costs. Swiftcast Materia reduces its cast time, but is better saved for another materia.
The poison and petrify materia outclasses petrify, as it is a more slot-efficient materia granting both sets of spells and potentially both sets of status resistances when paired with warding materia. Only one poison and petrify materia exists, meaning players will need to choose whether they wish to use it for spellcasting damage output or for warding materia resistance. The spells from poison materia are generally weaker at damage output than those from petrify materia, and the ability to resist both statuses at once can be extremely important, meaning that warding materia is often a better use of poison and petrify materia, freeing individual petrify materia for spellcasting uses or simply an additional warding materia depending on battle.
