The Platinum Shield is a mid-ranked shield in Final Fantasy XII that boosts the wearer's physical evade by 20.
Obtain
Original
In the original PlayStation 2 version, the Platinum Shield is bought for 5,300 gil from Mosphoran Highwaste after defeating Judge Bergan, Phon Coast, and Archades.
It is made in the bazaar in the "Platinum Gear" set by selling two Insect Husks (from mantis-type enemies, e.g. Scythe Mantis), five Tanned Giantskins (from many enemies, e.g. Slaven), and six Storm Magicites (from various enemies, e.g. Coeurl in Golmore Jungle).
Zodiac
In the updated Zodiac versions, the Platinum Shield can be bought for 4,750 gil in Mt Bur-Omisace after defeating Vinuskar, and in Mosphoran Highwaste after defeating Judge Bergan. It is found in a treasure in Paramina Rift's Silverflow's End (70% chance to appear, 70% chance for gil, 50% chance the item treasure is the Platinum Shield without the Diamond Armlet) and Tchita Uplands' Oliphzak Rise (35% chance to appear, 70% chance for gil, 50% chance the item treasure is the Platinum Shield without the Diamond Armlet), as well as in Trial Mode Stage 87 with the Diamond Armlet equipped.
It is the common steal from Marilith in Trial Mode Stage 34.
It is still made in the bazaar as part of the "Platinum Gear" set with the same items as before.
The Platinum Shield replaces the Diamond Shield as the hunt reward for Atomos.
Use
The Platinum Shield is a mid-ranked shield that helps the wielder evade physical attacks. The superior Dragon Shield is available at the same time or soon after. In the Zodiac versions, the Platinum Shield can be used by the jobs Red Battlemage, Knight, Foebreaker and Shikari.
The Platinum Shield can be equipped by characters with one-handed weapons or no weapon in their available hand. It adds to the wearer's physical evasion. Shield Block augments also add +5% to physical evasion per augment purchased. Equipping a shield negates the Brawler augment, even if the character is still attacking bare-handed. Some enemies, especially all the toughest bosses and marks, have Ignore Evasion as a passive ability, which causes their attacks to ignore all blocking and parrying.
The chance to block granted by gloves and shields and Shield Block licenses is checked separately to, and before, the evade from one-handed weapons. If the shield block fails, the game checks for the weapon block, and if that fails, the game checks for parry.[1]
