FFIV Poison Status
The party poisoned in Final Fantasy IV.

Poison (毒, どく, Doku?), sometimes abbreviated to Pois, is a common status effect in the Final Fantasy series, and appears in every single installment. Poisoned units take damage each turn during battle, and may take damage out of battle depending on the game, however it can only kill them when in battle.

In some games, the poison may remain after the battle, depending on what monster poisoned the character. This does not necessarily mean that the character will take damage while walking, but the character will be poisoned at the start of battles, and the poison will remain throughout the battle until it is cured. However, some monsters' poisons are temporary and the characters recover from it during the battles.

The damage from poison usually occurs after the character's turn. In some games, the damage will not occur if the poisoned character slays all of the enemies the party is facing, but this bug was fixed in later games. In some later games using the ATB system, poison damage occurs every couple of seconds, more often when Haste is in effect.

Poison can be cured by using an Antidote. Several games also have a spell called Poisona which cures Poison, and Esuna or Basuna will also cure the effect. This is another debuff called Venom which is alternatively stronger or weaker than Poison and may have different penalties and cures.

Appearances

Final Fantasy

FF1-PSP-poison Poison removes 1/20 of the afflicted character's maximum HP at the end of every turn. This status remains after battle and, if not cured, will remove one HP every time the player takes a step in the field, reducing the victim to just 1 HP in the worst-case scenario. This status can be removed by an Antidote and the White Magic spell Poisona.

This status can be inflicted on the party through the use of the attack Poison Darts and through a majority of physical attacks, including those of the Ooze, Snake, and Wolf family. Due to a bug in the game, enemies cannot be Poisoned, though it is impossible to do so as there is no way of inflicting the status on enemies.

Final Fantasy II

Poison removes a small amount of HP from the afflicted character at the end of every turn. This status remains after battle and, if not cured, will remove one HP every time the player takes a step in the field, reducing the victim to just 1 HP in the worst-case scenario. This status can be removed by an Antidote and the White Magic spell Esuna at any level.

Final Fantasy III

FFIIIDS Poison Symbol Poisoned characters will lose 1/16 of their max HP at the end of each round, and while walking on the field map, will lose 1 HP per step. Damage taken from Poison outside of battle cannot kill a Poisoned character.

Game Element Type Effect
Hellish Claws Weapons Inflicts Poison when attacking physically.
Poison Arrow Weapon Inflicts Poison.
Poison Dagger Weapon Inflicts Poison when attacking physically.

In addition to the above, several monsters can inflict Poison through physical attacks, being the Killer Bee, Poison Bat, Hermit, Hornet, Poison Toad, Needle Monkey, Death Needle, Ouroboros, and Greater Boros.

Final Fantasy IV

FFIVDS Poison Status Icon When poisoned, characters' skin turn a purplish hue and falls to a crouching position. Enemies gain no visual appearance when poisoned. Poison damages a character periodically during battle for 1/8 of their max HP and may last outside of battle, removing 1 HP for every step taken on the field.

All Poisoned characters also lose 42 HP if Teleport is cast. Higher Stamina slows the frequency. Haste accelerate the effect, while Slow delays it. The status disables Yang's Focus command.

All the SNES versions, the original Japanese GBA port, and the North American Advance release, contain a bug where resistance to Poison is ignored for both player characters and monsters. Poison still fails in boss battles, because all status spells are made not to work on bosses. The bug is fixed in the second Japanese GBA port and the European Advance version.

In the 3D version, Poison affects some bosses like Antlion and Leviathan. When an enemy or ally is poisoned, the poison damage is 1% of their max HP and is more consequently than non-3D versions.

Final Fantasy IV -Interlude-

The Poison status returns as a status effect and it functions the same way as its predecessor.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

The Poison status returns as a status effect. The Black Magic spell Poison, as well the weapons Poison Arrows, Poison Axe, Gigantaxe, and Hell Claw all inflict Poison to the enemy.

Final Fantasy V

Icon.

A unit inflicted with poison will lose HP equal to their Max HP/16 per instance in battle. Outside of battle, every step taken will result in the poisoned party member losing HP equal to Max HP/64. A character under stop will not take damage from poison and those with zombie are immune. The player can inflict the status with the Poison spell and Poison Sword, and the Poison Axe weapon, among various other methods. Poison is healed with Antidote item and Poisona spell, among various methods.

Final Fantasy VI

Poison status from FFVI icon A character afflicted with poison will take Poison Poison-elemental damage once every 17 seconds, with the amount of damage doubled on the second turn, tripled on the third, and so on until the eighth turn from where poison will continue to deal eightfold damage. Outside of battle, damage done from poison per step is equal to the character's max HP divided by 32. The poisoned character does not lose any HP when walking on stairs. Poison decreases the attacker's hit rate on the affected _target by 25% apart from versions affected by the Evade bug.

Final Fantasy VII

Poison-ffvii-BSreel

The player can protect against it with ST-Def-J and inflict it with Bio, Pain, Quistis's ailment-inducing Blue Magics, Irvine's Dark Shot, and Doomtrain.

Poisoned characters receive gradual damage equal to 1/16th of their Max HP. Cured by the items Antidote and Remedy, or the spells Panacea, Esuna, and Angel's Snack. Prevented by Antibody support ability and applied by Poison, Bio, and Bad Breath spells. Poison is an effect in Poison Knuckles and Rune Tooth. If Zidane is poisoned and uses Flee the moment he is going to die from it, he will still use the ability even though he is KO, sending the other members to safety.

Final Fantasy X

Poison1

Poison is very dangerous as after taking a turn it inflicts 25% of a character's maximum HP. The percentage can vary for enemies and some take no damage from Poison. It can Overkill an enemy if it accumulates with preceding damage when an enemy takes no action. Poison can be cured with items such as Antidote, and spells such as Esuna. The player can inflict it through the Poisontouch auto-ability, by using the Viper Extract item, or through the Black Mage's ability Bio. It can be healed with the Antidote Drink and Esuna Salve items or by the White Mage's ability Esuna.

Final Fantasy XI

FFXI Poison Status Poison is a DoT effect inflicted by spells such as Poison, Poison II, and Poisonga, as well as numerous creature abilities. Poison has no additional stat debuff, and must be cured with Poisona (or a Wyverns Remove Breath) rather than Erase. Barpoison and Barpoisonra increase the the chance of a resist, shortening the duration or negating the poisoning entirely; effects that automatically inflict poison ignore this effect. Poison damage will wake characters from most forms of Sleep, and Poison Potions are sometimes used by players to exploit this effect.

As of the August 10, 2022 patch, there is now an unremovable version of poison status called Tainted (劇毒, gekidoku?, lit. deadly poison), which the afflicted players have no choice but to simply wait out.

Final Fantasy XII

FFXII Poison Icon

The status effect Poison damages the _target for 6.25% of their max HP at certain intervals, but wears off over time. It can be cured using the items Antidote and Remedy and the spells Poisona, Esuna, and Esunaga. An enemy's death by Poison does not count toward chain level, allowing the team to eliminate an enemy without breaking chains if the foe is vulnerable to Poison. The damage from Poison is also unaffected by Reverse.

The status is inflicted with Poison and Toxify spells, as well as the Thorned Mace, Yakei, Bamboo Arrows, and Poison Bombs weapons. The Ensanguined Shield inflicts its wearer with ailments, including Poison. The Tourmaline Ring accessory protects against Poison status.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings

RW Poison Status Symbol The Poison status causes units to suffer from damage over time and can only be cured by the spell Esuna.

Kytes can learn the Bio spell at level 12, and it inflicts Poison to foes in an area. Cúchulainn is able to use Blight and inflict Poison to one foe.

Final Fantasy XIII

Poison-ffxiii-icon Poison is a DoT effect that constantly damages the _target's HP, draining a percentage of the _target's total health. Like all status ailments, Poison is inflicted more often and lasts longer the higher the _target's chain bonus is. In addition, it lasts for one more second for every 100 points of Magic the caster has.

Poison removes about 0.32% of the afflicted _target's total health per second, or about 19.2% per minute. Poison alone can remove all of a _target's health in just over 5 minutes. Because it removes a fixed percentage over time regardless of the number of hitpoints, it is advantageous on enemies with lots of HP. Unfortunately, most high HP enemies are immune to Poison. Two of the highest-HP enemies, however, Vercingetorix and Long Gui, are susceptible.

While summoning an Eidolon, the duration of Poison will be paused in Gestalt Mode, although it will continue to deal damage. When using an Eidolon's finisher attack, the opposite is instead true.

Final Fantasy XIII-2

There are more status healing items and magic that are capable of removing it, and the Saboteurs can still inflict it via Poison and Poisonga spells. As a new feature, some Paradigm Pack monsters are able to inflict Poison with their Feral Links.

During "A Testing Proposition" quest, Lightning must use Nektar Mk II when afflicted with Poison.

Uniquely, the last enemy in a battle can die to Poison during the short window between Lightning being KOd and the Item/Energy Point ability menu opening. If this happens, Lightning is revived with 1 HP.

Final Fantasy XIV

Poison is a common and generic damage-over-time effect inflicted by various creatures in Eorzea, marked with a red claw-like icon. With a few exceptions, it can almost always be removed by Esuna/Leeches/Exalted Detriment or by using an Antidote. Some poison may have a stacking property, where the number of stacks indicates the intensity of the damage.

A similar but distinct effect is Pollen, which is colored magenta and applies only while standing in harmful terrain effects.

Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy XV Poison

Some enemies can inflict Poison on the party, which gradually drains the afflicted _target's HP and disables HP regeneration. _targets with Poison will not have their HP reduced below 1. Poison is healed with an Antidote or Remedy. Star Pendant and Ribbon immunize the wearer to Poison, and some food provide Poisonproof and Resilient.

The player can inflict Poison on enemies via certain weapons, elemancy, and Ignis's Venom Fang.

A Poison effect called Envenomed also exists as a damage floor in Zegnautus Keep and Daurell Caverns.

King's Knight -Wrath of the Dark Dragon-

When afflicted with Poison, a unit will slowly lose HP for several seconds before it wears off. This is marked by a venomous brew over the unit's head. Poison can be triggered by enemy attacks, or by walking into the effect field of a poison flower. Poison flowers, however, are safe to shoot from a distance; though not a required _target, they can be destroyed in 3-5 shots.
