Durante a súa época de militar, estivo nas orquestras de Charlie Barnet, de Quincy Jones, e doutros grandes mestres. Despois foi protagonista de pequenas orquestras de jazz, destacando no seu instrumento, para logo, ao final, na década dos anos 40, ter a súa propia orquestra de jazz. Tamén posuía habilidade musical co fliscorno (un instrumento musical parecido ao bugle). Tamén escribiu libros sobre a súa vida, de historia da música e de como tocar a trompeta.
