Abaddon, also dubbed Titanus Abaddon, is a giant arachnid Titan in the MonsterVerse created by Legendary Pictures who was introduced in the 2019 film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, as a name briefly seen on a monitor. It makes its first full appearances in the 2024 video game Kong: Survivor Instinct and the 2025 graphic novel MonsterVerse Declassified.

Name

"Abaddon" (also known as "Apollyon" by the Greeks) is a Biblical Fallen Angel, sometimes known as the Angel of Death, the Angel of Destruction, the Angel of the Bottomless Pit, or the Angel of the Abyss. He is notably mentioned as the king of an army of locusts. Abaddon's name translates to "Destruction" or "Doom" in Hebrew. It also translates to "Eternal Tooth" in Latin and Greek.

Coincidentally, there is a newly-discovered Australian harvestman spider genus/species in 2021 called Abaddon despoliator, as parts of Abaddon greatly resemble spiders.

Design

Appearance

Abaddon is a gigantic arachnid-like creature with several unusual traits. Its head is adorned with eight pale teal eyes and mammalian jaws armed with massive peg-like teeth and two long white fangs. Abaddon stands upon eight fleshy pale red legs covered in a sparse coating of light gray hair and ending in massive chitinous spikes. It possesses a dark gray abdomen and, most notably, a gray cephalothorax resembling a human skull.

Roar

Abaddon produces chitters and shrill screeches.

Personality

Abaddon is a highly aggressive Titan and will attack other creatures on sight. It will also use the remains of its victims to deter potential rivals. Abaddon's aggressive nature has led to Monarch classifying it as a "Destroyer". Abaddon also prefers humans as its favorite prey.

Origins

On a Monarch archaeology expedition into the caverns beneath the Nazca Desert in southern Peru, an ancient Incan inscription was found. The words warned of the arachnid creature immortalized in the Nazca Lines covered onto the surface above: an ancient pictogram that has mystified historians for centuries. Abaddon can hide beneath the surface, motionless for years or even centuries, remaining completely undetected. Deep earth scanning of the vile vortices reveal a Titan spider den with an elephant skeleton partially cocooned on a gigantic spider web, acting as both a prey snare and a warning to rivals not to proceed further.Monarch Creature Profile

Not much is known about the evolution of Abaddon or how it came to develop. However, its physiology shares much in common with spiders and similar arthropods. Although it is currently unknown whether there is more than one member of its species present, Abaddon is the direct relative of other spider superspecies, including Plague Weavers (Araneae Pestilentiae), with Abaddon being the progenitor. Abaddon will give birth to these spiders through internal egg sacs, which hatch internally before emerging out of pits on its cephalothorax to serve as its vast network of soldiers.^[1] Historic evidence suggests that Abaddon is not only the progenitor of the Plague Weavers, but possibly of every arachnid species on Earth that act as "sleeper agents" awaiting Abaddon's commands.

History

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

At some point, Monarch established Outpost 77 around Abaddon in Devils Tower, Wyoming. When Ghidorah calls all the Titans, Abaddon breaks free and begins to hunt with its new pack. When the ORCA calls all Titans to Boston, Abaddon does not arrive in time for the battle and does not see Godzilla become the alpha of all Titans again (except Kong).

Kong: Survivor Instinct

Abaddon was attracted to an unidentified city in the eastern United States by Kong's presence. The Titan attacks the city, covering a portion of it in silk webbing and spawning countless Plague Weavers to create a new territory. Abaddon starts to capture numerous humans and trap them in cocoons, including Omisha Bhat. It soon turns its attention to David Martin and demolishes several buildings in an attempt to kill him, but fails to do so. Abaddon eventually manages to corner David in the streets but is challenged by Kong just as it is about to kill the man. The gigantic ape and arachnid begin to fight as David retreats underground. David eventually believes that Abaddon lost the battle, since Kong is later seen alive and well.

Abilities

Bio-fossorial nature

Monarch describes Abaddon's nature as "bio-fossorial", as it can burrow underground and lie motionless for centuries.

Crawling

Abaddon's arachnid-like legs allow it to traverse and crawl on any terrain.

Durability

Abaddon can withstand falling debris and attacks from Kong.

Hive mind

As the progenitor of the Plague Weavers and various other spider-like species, Abaddon can communicate with all its offspring. It leads an army of countless Plague Weavers and commands them to do its bidding via hive mind.

Reanimation

Through the use of smaller spiders that enter lifeless human bodies through their mouths, Abaddon can control the corpses like a puppeteer with marionettes.

Reproduction

Abaddon can give birth to several spiders from internal egg-sacs inside its womb caverns. On reaching maturity, they emerge through the skull-shaped "eye sockets" positioned above Abaddon's head. The most formidable soldiers of Abaddon's "army" are the Plague Weavers.

Silk

Similar to Mothra, Abaddon can shoot large quantities of silk webbing from its mouth that are stronger than steel and are capable of immobilizing humans and keep damaged buildings from falling apart.

Speed and agility

Abaddon can move its legs with great speed and agility in order to catch prey or move around its webbing. Its lighter size helps it dodge attacks from heavier enemy Titans.

Strength and combat

Abaddon's legs and their spiky tips can tear through the silk webbing it produces, as well as through the concrete and asphalt of buildings and roads. Its cephalothorax and jaws are also powerful enough to crush and demolish buildings. It can also use its jaws to bite Kong's thick skin.

Trivia

The outpost Abaddon was contained in, Monarch Outpost 77, is a possible reference to the 1977 Toho film The War in Space, or The Last Dinosaur, or possibly even Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which was also released in 1977 and features Devils Tower.
The location Abaddon was hibernating under is a sacred site to the region's Native American tribes (the Lakota, the Cheyenne, and the Kiowa), and the correct name of it is Bear's Tepee. It is said to have been created by or the home of a giant bear.
Abaddon is quite similar to Kumonga, since they are both gigantic arachnids that attacked the United States (Kumonga attacked Arizona in Godzilla: Final Wars while Abaddon attacked Wyoming in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the eastern United States in Kong: Survivor Instinct).
Given Abaddon is able to have offspring, the nature of Abaddon's viability is a matter of question. Abaddon is referred to with gender-neutral pronouns, making its biological gender unclear. The Monarch profile on Plague Weavers potentially contradicts this, with the explanation that the spawn emerges through ovoviviparous means. In addition to its ability to asexually reproduce, these could suggest that Abaddon may be female or hermaphroditic, or alternatively this is a novel feature of its species.
