For the Grand Theft Auto V version, see Bobcat XL.

The Bobcat is a continually recurring range of two-door pick-up trucks first introduced in Grand Theft Auto III and featured in nearly every game since then, with the only exceptions being Grand Theft Auto Advance, Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. It is manufactured by Vapid in the HD Universe.

Design

3D Universe

Throughout the 3D Universe, the Bobcat remained generally the same, being a compact two-door pickup truck with a seemingly small body and a medium-sized bed with the corresponding tailgate.

In Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, according to the design document of the former, the Bobcat was supposed to be a 1990 Toyota Hilux[1], although it has a more rounded shape, making it more similar to the Toyota T100, the 1995–1997 Tacoma or the 1993–1997 Ford Ranger. Its design is generally rounded and has large bumpers, a small grille, a bulged hood, wide arches and a tailgate with a silver detail. The GTA III rendition has a 3D modeling glitch where the passenger's side headlight is rounded, but the other one is longer and rectangular. This was rectified in GTA Liberty City Stories, receiving rounded lights. The vehicle spawns in a variety of primary colors on the body, with secondary colors on the bumpers, mirrors, door handles and the detail of the tailgate.

In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, the Bobcat strongly resembles a 1983-1992 Ford Ranger, with some minor influences from the 1981-1993 Dodge Ram D150 and a rear end appearing to be modeled on early models of the Toyota Hilux, with the appearance of its taillights and the word "BOBCAT" standing in for "TOYOTA". The GTA San Andreas rendition features a grille that seems inspired by the Jeep Comanche. Its design leans towards a more traditional shape, with square-shaped lights, smaller bumper and angular cabin, along with marker lights on the front fenders. Certain Bobcats in GTA San Andreas may feature Sprunk cans or a spare wheel in the back, and can sport either dirty or clean truck beds. The Bobcat can also be upgraded at TransFender, with changeable wheels, exhausts, etc. Along with the GTA Vice City rendition of the Moonbeam, the game's Bobcat is one of the earliest vehicles in the series to features its name printed on its body (on the tailgate). The Bobcat is used as a gang car by the Trailer Park Mafia in GTA Vice City Stories. Bobcats are available in two-tone body colors for all three of these renditions, with the secondary colors in the form of wide stripes on the sides and rear.

Grand Theft Auto IV

In Grand Theft Auto IV, the Bobcat is depicted as a full-size pickup truck, which resembles a Dodge D100 Club Cab as evidenced by its extended cab, with a Utiline stepside bed. The front fascia is based on the third generation Chevrolet C/K, specifically a 1985 model due to its quad stacked headlights, horizontal grille bars, and body colored crossbar. The spaced "VAPID" lettering on the hood is derived from the Ford F-Series, which featured similar lettering on all models until 1981. The rear lights resemble that of the 1967-1972 Chevrolet C/K, but have been inset into the rear fenders instead of being suspended from the tailgate.

The front of the vehicle is rather square-shaped, featuring a chrome bumper with what seems to be a dedicated central section for a license plate (though no actual plate is present), along with small vents and rectangular turn signals above. On the upper area, the vehicle features dual chrome grilles with seven horizontal elements per half and chrome housings with square headlights beside both halves of the grille, which are split by a painted horizontal divider and bearing the Vapid logo in the center, along with a "V10" badge on the lower half of the grille, next to the driver-side headlight. The hood is slightly elevated on the center and bears silver "VAPID" lettering above the upper grille and a "550CUI" badge on the driver side.

On the sides, the vehicle features square-shaped front wheel arches with slightly flared profile, along with badges on the fenders. Directly at the bottom, there are chrome side steps for access, whose upper surfaces bear additional badging displaying the manufacturer emblem and the vehicle's name. The cabin is relatively simple in appearance, having black sealed trim around the windows and square-shaped mirrors near the A-pillars, finished in chrome.

The rear area consist of a narrow truck bed, which feature wide arches, small steps behind the cabin and dual exhaust pipes below the driver-side load bed step. On the rear end, there is a large tailgate with "BOBCAT" embossed on an inset section and badges on the lower corners, while the wide arches have rectangular sections extending towards the rear end, housing circular red/white lights and rectangular turn signals at the bottom. The rear bumper consist of dual frames finished in chrome, having additional frames on the outer sides, a flat step in the center and a plate holder on the passenger side.

The interior has a grey/bluish finish and features a rectangular section on the dashboard with what seems to be two large dials on the sides and two smaller gauges above the steering column, with the radio set in the center of the dashboard and a glovebox compartment on the passenger side. The floormats appear to have the Vapid logo on both sides, just in front of the seats.

Bobcats can be seen with optional grille guards, or a roll bar with or without four lights on top, and on rare occurrences, with both. Bobcats may also, very rarely, come with an additional bed cover. However, it will never be found without boxes in the bed. Bobcats are commonly seen in a variety of single-tone colors, with the exception of a dark grey and light grey example, where the primary color is applied on the entirety of the vehicle and the secondary color on the rear section. It uses six-spoke rims wrapped in high-profile tires.

The vehicle has the same horn sound as the Rancher.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

In Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, the Bobcat is similar to the GTA IV one in terms of appearance, with several minor tweaks and a permanent roll bar.

Performance

3D Universe

Pre-GTA IV Bobcats have a V6 engine, with the only exception being the 4-cylinder in San Andreas and Vice City Stories. The Bobcat is fairly slow, but has high torque and strong, stiff suspension. However, the low power and heavy weight means it takes a long time and a straight and clear road for the Bobcat to achieve maximum speed. It is all-wheel drive and handles well on rough terrain, so it can be used for mild off-roading, but is inferior to the Patriot in this respect. While similar to earlier renditions, the GTA San Andreas, GTA Liberty City Stories and GTA Vice City Stories renditions sport lower ground clearance.

In GTA San Andreas, the Bobcat, together with the Sadler, is the third most durable vehicle in the game, as seen in the stats.

Grand Theft Auto IV

In terms of performance, the Bobcat is capable of rapid acceleration and a slow top speed. The vehicle does not turn sharply, but can powerslide around corners with enough use of the emergency brake. Off road, the Bobcat suffers from lack of 4WD, low ground clearance, and extremely poor wheel articulation. Also, the engine is somewhat overpowering, resulting in undesired wheel-spin in soft sand. The truck should not be considered a heavy duty vehicle for off road use. The Bobcat also has a 5-speed manual transmission, as indicated by a third pedal to the left, if looked at closely enough. Damage is average, and because of the roll bar, it will not have much roof damage in rollovers.

According to the badges, the truck is stated to have a very powerful 550 cubic inch (9.0L) V10 engine, yet the engine model appears to be a single-overhead cam V8, coupled to a 5-speed gearbox. Despite having "SUPER 4X4" written on the sides, the Bobcat is purely rear wheel drive, or they may have the 4WD disabled. The Bobcat shares the same engine sound as the Rancher, being generally mid-revving and quite loud.

Version History

Variants

(Rear quarter view)
Description

The Bobcat XL is a LWB (long wheelbase) variant of the Bobcat appearing in Grand Theft Auto V. While the original Bobcat does not appear in the game, the XL version appears as a replacement. It features some minor cosmetic changes, as well as some major differences in the rear quarter and the wheelbase in particular.

Special Variants

Grand Theft Auto III

  • In Grand Theft Auto III, the player can acquire a bullet-proof, fire-proof and explosion-proof Bobcat from Evidence Dash. This can be achieved by flipping the truck onto its roof (this can be easily done by bumping into it with a huge vehicle, such as a Barracks OL). Ramming the vehicle once will trigger a two-star wanted level, so it is best to ram it once, lose the wanted level and then return in order to actually flip the vehicle. Once it is flipped, it will be claimed by the game that the vehicle was a decoy, and a new Bobcat will spawn somewhere else on the map. The Bobcat can now be safely pushed onto its roof all the way to a garage (it does not start burning, as it is also tip-proof; however, this property is lost after being placed in the garage). Once it is inside the garage, let the door close, and then carry on with the mission as normal. The garage must then be checked again once the mission is done.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

  • In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, the player can acquire a black-and-red Bobcat during Autocide, when the player is required to kill two _targets (Marcus Hammond and Franco Carter) in the parked Bobcat. The easiest way to obtain the truck is by killing the driver using a sniper rifle from afar (which forces the passenger to exit the truck instead of gaining control of the truck himself), gaining access to the truck.

Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories

  • In Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, two uniquely colored Bobcats are featured during Love & Bullets (colored black) and Panlantic Land Grab (colored white with brown bumpers).

Grand Theft Auto IV

  • In Grand Theft Auto IV, a Bobcat is requested as part of Stevie's Car Thefts, appearing with a pale brown body. As a new Bobcat will respawn at the same spot until the player delivers one to S&M Auto Sales, the player can save one at their safehouse before delivering another. Just like the Rancher, the Bobcat may spawn with a few accessories.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Irish-American Killers variant

  • In Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, there is a gang variant driven by the Irish Killers gang. The "gang" Bobcat is distinguished by its green body and red roof.

Trivia

General

  • The Bobcat is an American mammal in the cat family.
  • There was a real vehicle produced by Mercury called the Bobcat.
  • The name Bobcat may also be a reference to Bobcat EMEA, an excavator manufacturer.

Grand Theft Auto III

  • The left headlight has a different shape than the right, which is presumably a modeler's mistake; this error was fixed in the Mobile release.
  • During development of GTA III, the Bobcat originally had a roll cage.
  • At one point during development of GTA III, the Bobcat sometimes came in a gold color.
  • As seen in the E3 Trailer, the Bobcat had a generic metal texture for the bed, before it was changed to the default body material of the bodywork. The texture still exists.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

  • A visual glitch is present in the Bobcat. If the player goes to any Transfenders mod shop and choose any exhaust pipe mod option, the custom exhaust pipes will be incorrectly placed inside the rear bumper.
  • Curiously, all Bobcats in San Andreas are driven by a pedestrian resembling Bishop (who was played by Tupac Shakur) from the movie Juice.
  • The Bobcat's rear signal lights will glow red at night or when braking.
  • All objects that can spawn in the Bobcat's bed are entirely static, and will not move. Even if the vehicle is flipped, the objects will remain in place. This trait is shared with the Picador.
  • The Bobcat is one of several vehicles with two color slots that cannot naturally spawn in one solid color, however it can be painted one solid color via a TransFender mod garage.
    • Two unique solid black Bobcats spawn in the mission Stowaway. This is the only time in the game solid-colored Bobcats can be naturally witnessed.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

  • There is a visual glitch in the game; after visiting a Pay 'n' Spray in a Bobcat, the tailgate will appear open.

Grand Theft Auto IV

  • If the player attempts to hop on to the rear cargo/freight compartment while the vehicle is still in motion, the player would most likely lose their balance and result in a bad fall on to the ground. However, if the player happens to be stuck in the cargo/freight compartment, their health will get gradually reduced and eventually become wasted.

  • Under the "Chinatown Wars" section of the Rockstar Games Social Club website, members may download a printable paper-craft model of the game's Bobcat. The vehicle's design is more alike that of GTA IV than GTA Chinatown Wars.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

  • The Bobcat was going to appear in Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. Only its police scanner speech line is left in the game files.[2]
