Dozer

The Dozer is a heavy earth-moving vehicle in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. It is manufactured by DUDE in GTA San Andreas and HVY in the HD Universe.

Influence

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

In GTA San Andreas, the Dozer's overall design is similar to that of a 1970-95 Caterpillar 834B Wheel Dozer, but utilising an overhead guard as opposed to an enclosed cab, similar to early specifications.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

In GTA V, the vehicle's design resembles that of a Caterpillar 963D Crawler Loader. The rear ripper setup is similar to those found on the Caterpillar D9, D10 and D11.

Design

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

The DUDE Dozer is depicted as a 4-wheeled dozer with a single seat. The vehicle features rear wheel steering. The front blade can be raised and lowered with Xbox right stick (Xbox), PS3 R3 (PlayStation) or Keyboard White 8 / Keyboard White 2 (PC). Two sets of functional headlights are mounted on the front arches. A set of reversing lights and tail lights (which also serve as brake lights) are present on either side of the rear grille, underneath a top-mounted exhaust stack. The truck's overhead guard is shared with that found on the Forklift, with the addition of side-mounted mirrors. The Dozer lacks a radio.

The vehicle is only available in a blue-greenish color with DUDE markings on either side of the engine bay.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

The HVY Dozer is a tracked loader, with an enclosed cab, front bucket and rear-mounted ripper. The front bucket can be raised and lowered with Xbox left stick (Xbox), PS3 L3 (PlayStation) or Keyboard White 8 / Keyboard White 2 (PC). The rear ripper is not functional, but due to its collisions, can be used to severely damage vehicles. The tracks are each held by 3 bottom rollers, 2 top carriers and a front and rear drive. The enclosed cab has two doors, the nearest of which will be used by the player to enter. Mesh panels are mounted on the rear windscreens, but do not provide protection in normal gameplay. Two functional lights (serving as headlights) are positioned at either side of the front windscreen, as well as two non-functional rear-view lights on the rear of the cab. Only a pair of tail lights (which also serve as brake lights) are mounted behind the rear vents.

The vehicle is only available in a matte yellow primary color, with a black secondary color stripe. HVY decals are found on all sides of the truck. The paintjob is permanently worn.

Performance

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

The Dozer is very large and heavy, and therefore has a slow top speed; the Dozer also features rear-wheel steering, meaning that it is pushed into turns instead of pulled, making for a very small turning radius, although this also makes the Dozer more vulnerable to tailspins if travelling at higher speeds. Its movable scoop can be used to plow through other cars with ease, as its weight and torque make it nearly unstoppable.

Due to its bottom-heavy design, the Dozer is designed to rest upright after a flip. This feature is very useful in Hunter Quarry's Quarry missions, as players can drive and flip the vehicle down several levels of the quarry without the risk of having the vehicle resting on its top or side. However, the open cab leaves the player vulnerable to being pulled out of the vehicle by hostile NPCs or police officers.

The vehicle uses a diesel engine located at the rear, coupled to a 5-speed gearbox and powering all wheels. It shares the engine sound with the Walton and the Tractor.

Grand Theft Auto V and Online

Since the Dozer is a heavy and tracked vehicle, it is predictably very slow, even slower than both the Lawn Mower and the player on foot. Handling is sluggish due to the vehicle's weight and speed, requiring a few seconds to correct it in case the vehicle is going in the wrong direction. Players are highly vulnerable to gunfire due to the cab's large windows, as well as explosive weapons due to its profile and slow speed.

The Dozer features a working concave scoop at the front that can easily pull and raise small vehicles and even trucks, and sometimes "grabs" them. The Dozer's scoop is even capable of lifting up a Jet by the nose landing gear. However, this may destroy the plane. It can also flip a Rhino Tank, although only from certain angles or positions. Any NPC or player caught in the scoop will likely die due to repeated collision damage. However, its lack of torque means that even pushing small vehicles such as the Issi or Futo will almost certainly lead to losing a great deal of what little speed the Dozer can achieve.

The vehicle is powered by a large engine located at the front, evident by the smoke coming from the nose when revving up. It shares the engine sound with the Rhino Tank and most industrial trucks.

Prominent Appearances in Gameplay

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

  • The Dozer is featured in the mission Deconstruction, where it is used by the workers, as well as by the player. In this mission, Carl Johnson can use it to destroy some portable cabins with the vehicle, while one of the workers will try to ram him with another Dozer.
  • In Test Drive, a Dozer is found as an obstacle along with a Cement Truck at a small blocked road in King's.
  • The Dozer is also featured in some Quarry Missions, which consist of clearing obstacles.

Grand Theft Auto V

  • It is most notably featured in the mission The Paleto Score, where Franklin, due to the unsuccessful getaway attempt by sea, aids Michael and Trevor in this vehicle, which was stolen from a construction site. On the way, he runs down some soldiers and clears out their vehicles from the road.
  • It is again featured in Lamar Down, where one of the ambush spots includes a Dozer (if executed without being spotted). The Dozer is destroyed by a Ballas member with the use of an RPG.
  • A Dozer appears during Mr. Philips, just after Ron says that there is a jump on the left.
  • A random character appearance at a Downtown construction yard involves large pipes falling on a truck. The driver gets stuck in the cab and the player has to rescue him by pushing the pipes away with a Dozer that is parked nearby before the truck explodes. The player can use it after said event.

Grand Theft Auto Online

  • A Dozer appears in the Payphone Hit "The CEO", in the construction area where the _target is seen. One of the possible objectives involves shooting the driver in order to make it drive by itself and kill the _target.

Trivia

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

  • If the player tries to tow a Dozer with a Towtruck and the Towtruck is turned sharply in any direction, both vehicles will be thrown in opposite directions with great force.
  • The Dozer lacks a radio.

Grand Theft Auto V

  • Strangely, the Dozer can perform a burnout. This is odd since, due to the fact that a tracked vehicle only has one driven pair of wheels which also have the only brakes on the vehicle, a tracked vehicle cannot do a burnout.
  • If the player looks closely, they will notice how the caterpillar tracks are actually disconnected from the main body.
  • If the player lowers the scoop over a dead body, the Dozer may glitch and, as a result of trying to lower the scoop despite the body, will be set on fire.
  • For some reason, if the player raises the Dozer's scoop on the back of a Titan, it will raise up almost instantly.
  • Despite how detailed the Dozer's scoop is, the hydraulic levers do not move the scoop to its according positions, they simply remain static.
