The Chase is the first mission in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City given to protagonist Tommy Vercetti by drug baron Ricardo Diaz from his mansion in Starfish Island, Vice City.

Description

Tommy visits Ricardo Diaz at his mansion on Starfish Island. Diaz explains that the leader of the Streetwannabe's has been stealing 3% his income, and he wants Tommy to visit the leader's apartment and then follow him to wherever he is keeping the money.

Tommy leaves the mansion and drives to the apartment. He arrives and looks through the apartment window, but it is empty. At that moment, the leader appears on the roof opposite and flees. Tommy chases after him but the leader jumps off the roof and into a waiting BF Injection. Tommy gets off the roof and chases the leader, eventually following him to one of the derelict mansions on Prawn Island.

Mission Objectives

In order to complete the mission the player must:

  • Go to the thief's house and find out where he's stashing the money.
  • Have a look through his window.
  • He's escaped to the roof, keep on his tail but don't kill him.
  • Quick! Grab some wheels and follow him.

Reward

The reward for completing this mission is $1,000 and the mission Phnom Penh '86 is unlocked.

Diaz: Come on, baby, go! Yeah! Yeah! Arrrrr!
Diaz kicks his TV set in a fit of rage. Tommy Vercetti soon enters.
Diaz: Stupid horse! I'll chop your head off! Grrrrr... who is this dickhead?!
Tommy: Tommy Vercetti. You remember me.
Diaz: Excuse me, I'm a little anxious. Never trust a goddamn horse!
Diaz angrily stomps a few more times on his TV set.
Diaz: You do a good job - you work for me now.
Tommy: I work for money.
Diaz: As I said, amigo, you work for me now.
Tommy: (not in subtitles) I work for...

Tommy leaves the mansion.
Tommy: This asshole thinks he can mess with me? If this is the best Vice City has to offer, this is gonna be easy.
Tommy goes to the apartment of the man that betrayed Diaz, located in Vice Point. After peeking through the empty apartment, Tommy finds the gangster attempting to escape using the staircase to the roof.
Streetwannabe's Leader: Oh, shit!
Tommy goes after him.
Streetwannabe's Leader: Loser!
Tommy dodges the gangster's gunfire from his Ruger, and continues to chase him across the rooftops.
NOTE: The following line of dialogue will play only if Tommy is slow in catching up to the gangster.
Streetwannabe's Leader: Too slow, granddad!
The gangster shoots the red barrels, causing a fire and attempting to block Tommy's way.
Tommy: You better keep on running, asshole!
The gangster eventually reaches the ground and gets into a BF Injection. Tommy then follows the gangster across Vice Point until he reaches an abandoned mansion in Prawn Island.
