- "This gives you equal status with prefects! You can use our special bathroom now and everything."
- — Hermione Granger to Harry Potter regarding his awarding of Quidditch Captaincy.[src]
Captain is a rank and title used to signify the leader of various positions and groups in both the Muggle and wizarding worlds.
History
The Tales of Beedle the Bard was written in the 15th century and featured a character called the Captain of the Brigade of Witch-Hunters.[1]
The wizard Abraham Leslie McCracken was captain of his own ship during the 16th century when he sailed from the New World to Europe.[2]
The title of Quidditch Captain was in use at Hogwarts during at least the 17th century, as Astrix Alixan was the Quidditch Captain of Gryffindor Quidditch team in 1688.[3] In the 20th century, both the Hogwarts Duelling Club and the Hogwarts Gobstones Team also had captains, the latter position of which was held by Eileen Prince in the 1940s.[4][5]
By the 1920s there was a position in the Magical Congress of the United States of America called the Captain of Aurors, which was held by M. P. Carneirus.[6]
